The Wildcat Weekly
September 30 - October 4
Happy Sunday, GIS Families,
September is coming to a close, and our first Character Trait celebration comes with that. Students and staff have focused on cooperation and the skills to cooperate successfully during the first month of school. Many examples of cooperation filled our school. Tomorrow at 2:30, we will assemble in the gym for a recognition ceremony for all students. Families are welcome to join and may stand along the perimeter of the inside of the gym. We are reserving the bleachers for students and staff. We will continue working on cooperation throughout the year and focus on Respect in October.
The news this week of our after-school program being halted was gut-wrenching. I have already begun conversations with the Superintendent and community parents to see what we can do to support kids. As a clearer path forward emerges, I will notify you immediately. We currently bus kids to Eagle Care in North Hero and have the availability to bus kids to Turn to Joy in Grand Isle. If you reach out to North Hero School and TTJ, they might be able to support your immediate needs. A GIS family has also offered to support after-school needs. You can reach out to Erin LeDuc for more information erin.leduc1@gmail.com. I am not giving up on this.
This week, we also had our first Options-Based Drill. During the first drill, I looked to ensure doors were locked, that I couldn't see anything or anyone, that the lights were off, and that the building was silent. GIS did a fantastic job! I forgot to send the text alert and will run that test today at 3 PM.
School and class pictures went home Friday. If you would like your kiddo to get a retake, let the classroom teacher know. There is no additional cost or actions on your part.
Please see other important updates below about our Read-a-Thon, intervention, and More!
As always, I'm here for you! My door and inbox are always open, so feel free to reach out anytime.

You’re invited! Grand Isle County Farm to School Gathering
Wednesday, October 16, 2024, 4–6:00PM
As part of the Vermont Farm to School & Early Childhood Network, We invite you to join us at an upcoming Grand Isle County Farm to School Gathering, on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, 4–6:00PM at the Grand Isle Elementary School.
We’re coming together to learn from one another and find opportunities to strengthen the farm to school movement across Grand Isle County. The agenda includes opportunities to connect with others from your town and/or school to share what you are working on and excited about.
Get event details and let us know you can join us!
Anyone interested in this work is welcome, and I hope to see you there. Please reach out to me with any questions.
Intervention
Intervention letters are making their way home. We assess kids three times a year to gain a clearer understanding of their skills. From these assessments, teachers can better understand specific student needs in hopes of supporting their growth.
If your kiddo is identified as needing intervention, there are some core foundational skills that need building in math, literacy, or social skills. Early intervention is essential to student success, and you are a partner. If you receive a letter and have questions, please reach out to the classroom teacher, Kate Merola (literacy interventionist), Kate Young (math interventionist), Krista LaBonte (SEL), or Marlowe Newman (SEL).

Grand Isle School Read-a-Thon
We are going to start a read-a-thon on 10/1/24 with our school! Our hallways will be lined with GIANT bookmarks that the kids will make (each student will have their own bookmark), and they will fill their bookmark with books they have read at school and home.
More information will be going out to families next week and we encourage you to read as much as you can with your kiddo(s)! Stay tuned and be sure to find your kiddo's bookmark at open house!
School Fundraiser
We have partnered with Boosters for our school fundraiser this year. Boosters is more than just fundraising, it's about skill building and setting healthy goals. As we get closer to our Fun Run, we will be asking for parent volunteers, so keep an eye out!
*As part of our fundraiser, every student is coming home with a t-shirt!*
