Emmaus Catholic Primary School
Term 2, Week 11 Newsletter: Thursday 26 June 2024
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGES
Lord, guide us today in the choices
we make for ourselves and our children.
May they all be life-giving
and based upon values
that are lasting and beneficial.
Amen.
There is an African proverb that says, “Do not look where you fell but where you slipped.” One possible meaning of this proverb is that if you wish to avoid having a 'fall' in life, be careful with the steps you take along the way. As parents, we not only have to take care of our own life’s journey but, as well, to take care of how our children are travelling. One of the most important 'steps' in any child’s journey is the welfare of their imagination.
A healthy and active imagination promotes emotional growth and creative development. Imagination is the mind’s ability to project itself beyond the ordinary that occurs as part of daily life. When our children engage in imaginative play, they become active users rather than passive recipients of experience, they work out difficulties and adjust the realities of life to their personal inner requirements. In make-believe play, children might choose to take on our roles as parents, to make right any grievances that have caused anxiety or suffering and turn them into more satisfactory experiences.
One of the pitfalls to having a healthy and active imagination is television or screen time, for when children’s minds are occupied with tools, their opportunities, and abilities to exercise their own imaginations become somewhat limited. Children begin to rely on and to imitate images that are projected from these sources into their minds. The opportunity to experience events then becomes second hand. Children can become dependent on outside sources to create ideas and visual images for them. In other words, when children default to screens or media or YouTube etc they are interacting only indirectly with their world. They are having second-hand experiences where they passively observe the actions and ideas of others. It is even possible for the modes of media to replace the parent’s role in the socialisation of their children and the development of human values, if they are monitored or managed appropriately.
If the traditional opportunities for expressing growth within the family are replaced by other options, then children are losing the opportunity to explore and experience real human relationships and values. The most critical element for growth in any family is positive relationships and how these can be fostered.
Through their imagination, children find expression for their inner most being. They discover their true feelings and thoughts that awaken their sense of who they are. To nurture this inner discovery, children need some time each day for reflection, for processing the events of the day and, if necessary, for resolving conflicts that might have occurred. They need to be free from other people’s ideas and images and have the freedom to discover their own. This downtime they may actually refer to as 'boredom' or being bored, of which there is nothing wrong with. Often, we try to entertain or look for entertainment for our children when in fact the most purposeful learning experience can be found in a quiet space or time.
The section written above reminded me of an Instagram post I saved which was really something for parents to ponder.
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PLAY AND PJ DAY
Just as the wild winter weather has set in, our PJ and International Day of Play was welcomed by our students on the 11th of June.
Play opens up a world of possibilities - it builds resilience, instils confidence and helps children develop. At Emmaus, we believe that every child can reach their full potential with the time, space and access to play. Our fun day was celebrated with buddy indoor and outdoor play activities with students and teachers all warm and cosy in their best pyjamas. Thank you to our P&F for spoiling students with a delicious hot chocolate and a tasty cookie treat too. Much gratitude to Brownes Dairy for donating milk for the beverages. An extra thank you to all who contributed to our Wheelchairs for Kids collection too! A whole lot of joy for our Emmaus students, but also a big bonus for children in poorer countries with mobility issues. We can all make a big difference!
SACRAMENTS & LITURGICAL EVENTS UPDATE
It's been a busy term in the way of Sacraments this term, with parent/child workshops, retreats and rehearsals over the last weeks. Congratulations to our Year 3 students who received the Sacrament of Reconciliation two weeks ago. It was a reflective, reverent liturgy in celebration of God's forgiveness.
Our combined Emmaus and St Helena Primary School Mass was held at Holy Cross Parish on 16 June. It was wonderful to see a number of our children and their families in attendance. Our two school choirs combined to sing so beautifully in worship. We thank the choir students for their commitment and Mrs Leith for preparing them for our mass.
We also thank parents who attended the Year 4 Eucharist parent/child workshop last week at St Helena's. A group of Year 4 students will be receiving the Blessed Sacrament in the first few weeks of next term, so we pray for these students at this special time of preparing to receive the Body of Christ.
KINDERGARTEN (GREEN) NEWS
This Term we learnt about God’s creation, we looked at the changes that occurred each month in our trees and kept a close eye on our orange tree. We love picking oranges from our tree to share with our family, linking the changes in weather to the six Noongar Seasons. The seasons match our weather and we painted our favourite Noongar Season.
We ended the term with a morning of bubbles with our Kindy and Pre-Primary friends. The wind carried the bubbles high across our playground, we had so much fun chasing and popping bubbles.
We had so much fun playing outside and using our loose parts in our play. We love exploring our outdoor area and engaging in imaginative, creative play.
OUR TALENTED YEAR 2s
Our Year 2 class have certainly been busy in the last little while! Not only did they showcase their Fairy Tale flair in their recent assembly, but they also entertained our Memory Cafe friends this week.
We are hugely fortunate to have the Swan Valley Memory Cafe group visit our school frequently. They are a group of friends that provide social connection for people living with dementia. Our visitors loved the Year 2 performance, the story-telling sessions and the delicious morning tea that our students enjoyed with them along with a chit-chat.
Thank you Year 2 and Miss Fraser for your awesome entertainment!
CONGRATULATIONS
We congratulate Ezekiel Rico from Year 3 who represented Emmaus Catholic Primary School for an audition to be part of the Saint Mary’s Cathedral Boys’ Choir. Out of many young boys who auditioned, only 6 were selected to be in this music program. How exciting for Ezekiel to be one of the 6 boys chosen. Well done, Ezekiel!
COOK BOOK COVER COMPETITION
Students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 have been encouraged to enter the P&F Cook Book Cover Competition. These last couple of days has seen our students vote for their class favourite, then the overall favourite across the classes. We have a WINNER! Congratulations to Ezekiel from Year 3 who was recognised this morning for his superb design. We can't wait to see your artwork on the Emmaus Cook Book.
Our awesome P&F will soon be giving families information about compiling a deliciously tantilising Emmaus Cook Book and buying copies before the end of the year (what a great Christmas gift!).
ST VINCENT DE PAUL WINTER APPEAL
An ENORMOUS thanks to all who have donated to the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. We will be having our donations collected early next term. Should you happen to be clearing out over the holidays, we will be accepting these items, particularly sized for children:
- blankets/lap rugs
- children's sweaters
- beanies
- warm socks
- gloves
- scarves
Please deliver clean, good condition items to the baskets in the classrooms or hall.
SEE YOU AT THE DISCO!
The Emmaus P&F and staff can't wait to see the students registered to attend our DISCO tonight! A few reminders:
- 3K, 4K and PP disco is at 4:30 pm - 5:45 pm
- Year 1 - Year 6 disco is at 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
There will be a sausage sizzle available from 5:15 pm - 6:15 pm (junior students can buy their treat and a juice drink after their disco session, other Year 1-6 students can buy theirs before their disco session). No food or drink allowed in the hall (except water bottles).
Glow sticks, ice creams and refreshments can be bought from the kitchen hatch. Parents, look out for the coffee van too!
See you there!
ENROLMENTS FOR 2025
Our leadership staff have been busy interviewing for 2025 placements across all classes. Currently, we have more applications than we have places available. Should your family be moving on from Emmaus, it is important to advise Admin early as over the next weeks, offers to new families will be finalised.
Today we welcomed our third group of prospective families for a school tour and all commented on how friendly our students and staff have been while visiting rooms and classes, and how warmly welcomed they were made to feel.
SCHOOL UNIFORMS - TERM 3
For a number of weeks and with the cooling weather, our staff have spent some time in reminding students about the Emmaus uniform requirements both in class and at our assemblies. This week, leadership visited classes to point out the uniform items that need attention. Parents, please spend some time these holidays in ensuring your child has the correct items. We specifically have noted:
- Many children wearing black joggers/sneakers. There are NO black runners as part of our uniform. Sports shoes must be predominantly white runners and formal uniform shoes are black lace-up, velcro strapped or girls' Lady Jane/T-strap shoes.
- Students wearing their own 'oodies' or jackets - students need to be wearing an Emmaus cardigan or pull-over jumper. Should extra layers be required, a singlet or long-sleeved white base layer can be worn underneath the school shirt.
- A large number of students with hats, jumpers and cardigans with no name. All items must have your child's name clearly printed on the label.
- Some children are not wearing ties - a compulsory tie is required for winter for students in Year 1 - 6.
Attached below is a copy of our required uniform items across the classes. The JFE Uniform Shop is open these coming holidays, except for Monday 1st to Wednesday 3rd July (stocktake).
1 /85 Guthrie Street
Osborne Park WA
If students are not in correct uniform after a check-in, there will be a note sent home to parents.
We are aware that from time to time there will be limited uniforms available, and students will have to wear other items. If this is the case, the class teacher will require a note from parents explaining this, until the item becomes available.
SUSTAINABILITY AT EMMAUS
Have you noticed our upgraded greenhouse? We are excited to have partnered with the construction students from SEDA College. Students from Year 11, along with their teacher, Mr Adam Preston, were onsite a couple of weeks ago to pave our greenhouse space in preparation for our students to take another step toward a greener, more sustainable school. We look forward to classes at Emmaus participating in hands-on learning experiences as they experiment with this edible garden opportunity. Watch this space! A big thank you to Mrs Freeman for coordinating this project.
WELLBEING AT EMMAUS
Sleep & Relaxation
The Year 3 students have been engaging in colouring activities that promote relaxation and enhance their wellbeing. This supports the school Term 2 focus: Sleep and Relaxation. They have also discussed and explored ways to prepare themselves for a good night’s sleep by limiting screen time to play with their toys, stretch, or take mindful breaths before bed.
Kimochis
Meet a new Kimochis character, Cat! Cat can be very persuasive. She is a great leader but can sometimes be a bit bossy. She helps students develop patience, forgiveness, helpfulness, safe/kind decision-making and leadership skills. She comes with Happy, Curious and Cranky feelings and teaches students how to manage these feelings. You can ask your Kindy child all about Cat and use the Home Links for some ideas of activities to do at home.
NAIDOC WEEK IS COMING
KAYA!
NAIDOC Week will be held during our holidays this year so, the students of Emmaus will be celebrating in Week One of Term Three.
Our staff have organised for various events and activities to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Take a look at the fun experiences on offer:
Noongar Games Incursion
The fabulous Year 11 students of the Baldja Mob from SEDA will be visiting on Friday 19 July. They will be running rotations with the PP-Y6 students to teach a range of Noongar games.
Dreamtime Story Read-Alouds
Students will listen to Dreamtime Story read-alouds by Wooyal Dreaming.
Minecraft Education
For those with access to Minecraft Education, there is a challenge titled Indigenous Stories that encourages students to research and illustrate a Whadjuk Noongar story.
Online Immersive Experience
Students will access an immersive experience that is designed to give a glimpse into Whadjuk Noongar stories.
Whadjuk Noongar Language
Each morning in the announcements the Year 5/6 students will introduce a new Noongar word and be encouraged to use these words in a sentence during the morning circle as well as encourage them to use these in their speaking.
Indigenous Music
Mrs Leith will be running through various songs with the students in the week such as Noongar Our Father and the Bibbulmum Bonar Six Seasons.
Thank you to our NAIDOC Week Planning Committee for organising these activities!
HOLIDAY READING IS VITAL!
Did you know that students can lose up to three levels of reading progress over the holiday break if they don't read. It's like muscle atrophy (decrease in muscle size and strength if you aren't active). Want to avoid that? Insist that your child reads everyday these holidays. And... be sure to read to them daily too!
This is a great opportunity to boost up the number of books read for the Premier's Reading Challenge. It's not too late to sign up! Students are encouraged to read at least 12 books over four months which can include comics, short stories, novels, magazines, lyrics, etc. Not only will those who complete the challenge receive a certificate from the Premier, but they are also eligible to win over 110 assorted prizes. Register via the website: https://www.premiersreadingchallenge.wa.edu.au/
MID-YEAR REPORTS ARE ISSUED TOMORROW!
Tomorrow all Mid-Year Reports will be issued to parents via SEQTAEngage. A number of reminders have been sent to parents in regard to ensuring your account is set up and 'welcome' emails have been sent with set up codes. This is the only way to access your child's report. Please note that Catholic schools use SEQTAEngage to distribute reports to parents, as print outs by the school are not available.
FRIDAY 28 JUNE - PUPIL FREE DAY
Please be reminded that tomorrow, Friday 28 June, is a Pupil Free Day. As Emmaus educators will be joining other school staff for professional development, there will be no staff on site. OSHClub clients, please be aware that the service will not be operating tomorrow.
SPORT NEWS
HOCKEY PROGRAM
In Term 3, we will be running a free 8 week Hockey Program for all Emmaus Students (Kindy-Year 6). Please register your child through the link provided. The only item you will need to get your child is a mouth guard, all other equipment is provided. This is a great opportunity for Emmaus students to get involved with community sport and build a love for the sport of Hockey in a fun and safe environment.
