AK STAR Testing
Rogers Park AK Star Testing is Off to a Running Start
Each spring, Alaskan students are provided an opportunity to show what they know. When students show what they know, teachers and parents can partner to promote student success. The State of Alaska Department of Education has partnered with NWEA to align and connect the English language arts (ELA) and mathematics tests with the MAP Growth benchmark assessments students take in fall and winter.
This balanced assessment system targets instruction to better support meeting students’ individual learning needs. In addition, students will take only one assessment per content area (ELA and math) and be provided two scores as follows:
Summative assessment result at grade-level
MAP Growth interim benchmark result, including growth from fall to spring
AK STAR, the Alaska System of Academic Readiness, is comprised of English language arts and mathematics and is administered to students in grades 3-9. The Alaska Science Assessment is administered to students in grades 5, 8 and 10. The purpose of a large-scale, summative assessment is to provide parents and schools an overall picture of a student’s progress in meeting the Alaska standards at grade level.
Parents can locate resources for AK STAR and the Alaska Science Assessment, including directions for Student Readiness (Practice Tests and Tutorials), student testing times and general assessment information on the ASD website at https://www.asdk12.org/akstar.
Parents can also help by ensuring their children are well rested, eat a nutritious breakfast, and are at school on time for the days of testing. Please avoid scheduling appointments on your child’s testing days.
The ASD AK STAR and Alaska Science Assessment testing window allows for school assessment scheduling flexibility.
mClass Spring Benchmark Testing
As part of The Alaska Reads Act, the State of Alaska requires that districts administer an early literacy screening tool three times a year to students in grades K-3 to identify potential reading difficulties in order to improve reading outcomes for students. Families can read more about this comprehensive K-3 reading policy at The Alaska Reads Act website: education.alaska.gov/akreads
mClass with DIBELS 8th Edition Assessments is the State of Alaska Department of Education’s and ASD’s Early Literacy benchmark screening and progress monitoring tool for students in grades K-3 in reading. mClass utilizes curriculum-based measures and is used by schools as part of the ASD Comprehensive Assessment System to support informed instructional decisions.
The Alaska Department of Education & Early Development explains the decision to adopt mClass as the statewide literacy screener here:
https://education.alaska.gov/Alaska-Reading-Resources/Statewide-Early-Literacy-Screener
mClass screening assessments will only be administered in-person during the benchmark window listed below:

Nurse Update
Hello Rogers Park families!
In the event of a volcanic eruption while students are in school, please plan for an early dismissal day. If the ashfall comes toward Anchorage and your student is still at school during that time, please note that we have procedures in place like closing all windows and doors, and turning off our HVAC system. While I do have an ample supply of medical grade masks for staff and students, I know that some parents have inquired specifically about the availability of KN95 masks. I do have enough KN95 masks for students with a diagnosis of asthma or other respiratory disorders, but the majority of staff and students will receive a medical mask if needed. Please reach out if you have any specific questions and I'll do my best to answer them or help find the answer. Email is best as I check it often.
Thanks and stay healthy!
Nurse T.
Yearbook Update
Talent Show
We’re going to end the year with a BANG! Students have an opportunity to audition to be a part of this year’s Talent Show. In order to keep the Talent Show to an hour, not all students who audition will be in this year’s show. Please be prepared for this possibility.
· Talent Show Date: Friday, May 2nd at 12:45pm (school assembly) & 6:30pm in the Gym. All performers must stay until the end of the show for the final bow.
· Audition Dates: Tuesday, April 15th, OR Thursday, April 17th, from 2:30pm-4:00pm in the Music Room
· Mandatory Dress Rehearsal: Thursday, May 1st from 2:30pm-4:30pm in the Gym. Performers must attend the Dress Rehearsal and must stay for the entire time. Performers who leave early or fail to attend the Dress Rehearsal will be removed from the final performance.
All acts need to be PERFORMANCE READY at the audition time. A performance ready act includes the following characteristics and has the following requirements:
· Acts may not exceed two (2) minutes. Shorter acts are appreciated to allow more students to participate.
· The act must be performed from beginning to end without stopping or restarting.
· All acts should be entertaining and fun to watch!
· All music, dancing, and acts must be elementary appropriate.
· Absolutely NO lip-syncing. An accompanist or a karaoke type CD must accompany all singers unless sung a cappella.
· To add variety to the show, there will be a limited number of the same type of acts.
· Students may participate in one (1) solo performance and one (1) group performance with a maximum of two acts.
· Dancing, Singing, Instrumental/Piano Performance, Magic Tricks, Poetry Readings, Karate Demonstrations, Juggling, Comedy Routines, Hula Hooping, etc., are appreciated to make our Talent Show interesting and fun!
· The decision of the judges is final and must be respected.
Good luck and practice hard! Auditions are right around the corner.

- Please only pick students up from the curbside pick up lane. It is extremely dangerous to have students crossing multiple lanes of traffic.
- Please be mindful of your speed as you travel through the pick up lane. Our young running wolves are out and about and we want to be sure they get to their destination safely.
- Students in grades K-2 should not be crossing the crosswalk to the parking lot without an adult. Please accompany your child across the crosswalk when coming to pick them up.
- Please do not park or drop off on the cross walk.
- Thank you for minding the traffic flow of our pick up loop. Please refer to the picture below to review our pick up traffic flow.

Camp Fire Fall Registration
Hello Camp Fire Families,
On March 19, 2025 at 6:00 am, registration for the 2025-2026 school year will open for all Camp Fire sites. This includes after school programs, half days, full days, as well as winter and spring break. Camp Fire’s monthly after school fees do not include half or full day programming. All half day, full day, and breaks require a separate registration.
Camp Fire plans to operate full day, winter and spring break programs at Alpenglow and Rogers Park Elementary Schools. These sites are subject to change based on availability from the Anchorage School District. Camp Fire will notify families if any changes in location occur. Camp Fire charges a $35 deposit for each option that you enroll in. This deposit will apply to the full cost of that option. The after school program as a whole is just one $35 deposit and then any additional options will have their own $35 deposit.
When you are making your selections for the after school program, you will see each month listed separately. You must select all 10 months to complete your registration. Several months are pro-rated due to a reduction in program days. Camp Fire is excited to announce that after school programs at Chugach Optional and Gladys Wood Elementary schools will re-open for the 2025-2026 school year. Registration for these programs also opened on March 19 with all other sites.
Rates for the upcoming school year are below. Aquarian and Chugach Optional have a different schedule than other ASD schools so their rates are listed separately. All other schools will have the same after school monthly rate. After School Monthly- $590 Aquarian After School Monthly- $520 Chugach Optional After School Monthly-$535 Camp Fire will continue to offer scholarships as funds allow. Scholarship information and links to the applications are available on our website and will also be available in the document center when you login to your UltraCamp account. If you have any questions about fall registration, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
Thank you! Camp Fire Alaska
PTA Update
Happy Spring, PTA Families!
Thanks to so many of our families who joined us at our Parent Advocacy Training and March membership meeting last week, it was so wonderful to see many new and familiar faces and we were very fortunate to benefit from Kim's knowledgeable and practical tips for advocating for our students. Wow, March was a very busy month! PTA stayed active at Rogers Park as we hosted our Read Across America Breakfast just before spring break and the school-wide Science Fair, closed out the recess ice-skating season and supported our students and staff with snacks for AK Star testing. We appreciate each and every one of our amazing volunteers and donors who have made these events and programs possible.
PTA needs YOU! We will have 3 open board positions next year:
President
Treasurer
VP, Communications
If you are interested in any of these roles, please let us know via email (rogers.park.pta@gmail.com) and we can share more about the duties they entail. Mentorship will be available this spring and even next fall. These board positions are for a one year term, with the potential to renew for a second for 2 consecutive years according to our bylaws, which are also up for renewal in May. We will vote on new board positions at our April 17th meeting in order to allow time for transition. If a board position is not something that you can fit into your busy schedule, we do have many open committee positions and small volunteering commitments that can be done outside the school or work day. We are looking for PTA members to coordinate a Multicultural Potluck later this month, and we will need volunteers and donors as we plan for Staff Appreciation Week the first full week of May, and much of that work could be done via email or before/after school at your convenience.
Finally, if you would like to place an order for WolfPack gear, please visit the online store and place your order by Wednesday, April 2nd. Go Running Wolves!
Thank you again to our amazing membership for all of the work you do to support our students and staff at Rogers Park!
