Reminder - Schools of Choice Opens Tomorrow

The Schools of Choice annual open enrollment process begins tomorrow, December 1, 2023, and ends on December 31, 2023. Visit the Schools of Choice website for more information about this year’s process.

Carmentia Students Collect Books to Donate

Last year, Jackson Woodbury, the Model United Nations teacher at Carmentia Middle School, challenged students to come up with a community service project. The students responded by collecting and distributing food for those in need around the holiday. Mr. Woodbury extended the same challenge to this year’s MUN class. The students are collecting new and gently used children’s picture books to support younger students who may not have access to books outside of school. The Books for Brains program will be collecting books through December 13th. Books can be dropped off at Carmenita Middle School during regular school hours.

Nixon Students Perform at Cerritos Tree Lighting

The Nixon Musical Troupe performed at this year’s City of Cerritos tree lighting ceremony. The talented students sang “Don’t Save it All for Christmas” and “Christmas in L.A.” at the event, providing holiday cheer to all in attendance.

Dons Win!

Congratulations to the Cerritos High School varsity football team for winning the CIF Southern Section Division 12 Championship! The Dons scored a 19-13 overtime win over Yucca Valley High School last Friday night. The team will now face Wasco High School on Friday, December 1, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. at Artesia High School at the CIF Regional Championship. Good luck, Dons!

Fedde Academy Featured on Spectrum News

Spectrum News recently featured a story about motivational speaker Ovi Vazquez, which was recorded at Fedde Academy and features the school’s students. Thank you to Mr. Vazquez for choosing Fedde Academy to share his story. You can watch the video here.

Gahr Marching Gladiators are State Champs

Congratulations to the Gahr Marching Gladiators for winning the California State Band Championships. Not only did the band take home the State Championship, but they did it with a record score of 97.60 while winning awards for High Music, High Visual, High General Effect, and High Percussion. You can watch their performance at the event here. Congratulations also go out to the Cerritos Regiment of Gold for their fourth-place finish and to the Artesia Pioneer Regiment for a successful marching season.

Navigating Schools of Choice Workshop

ABC Teacher to Serve on State Commission

Join us in congratulating ABCUSD teacher Lena Bradshaw for being selected to serve as a Commissioner for the Instructional Quality Commission by the California State Board of Education. The Commission is made up of 18 members who develop and recommend curriculum frameworks, evaluate instructional materials submitted for adoption, evaluate instructional materials submitted by publishers, and recommend policies and activities to the California State Board of Education and the California Department of Education. Ms. Bradshaw is currently serving as a Teacher on Special Assignment with Secondary Curriculum and Professional Learning.

In 1965 the Artesia, Bloomfield, and Carmenita School Districts unified and became the ABC Unified School District. Today, the District serves over 20,000 Pre-K to 12th Grade and adult education students through its 30 campuses, adult school, and virtual academy. The District is home to some of the most awarded and recognized schools in California and serves the cities of Artesia, most of Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, as well as portions of Lakewood, Long Beach, and Norwalk.
