Principal's Corner
Dear Southfield A&T Families,
As we bid farewell to February, I am filled with immense pride reflecting on the incredible leadership culture we are nurturing within our school community. This month has been particularly exciting as we witnessed our students reaching new heights in their leadership roles.
Our Student Council recently participated in the state conference, bringing home several awards that mark a historic achievement for A&T. Among these accolades, I am thrilled to announce that Mr. Tyson Howard received the prestigious Overall Student Council Leadership Award, recognizing him as the top student council leader across the entire state of Michigan. This is a momentous occasion for our school and I couldn't be more proud of Tyson and our entire Student Council for their hard work and dedication.
As we celebrate our students' accomplishments, I would also like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Eric Spraggin for receiving the McDonald's Leadership Scholarship Award. Unfortunately, students who are doing the right things go unnoticed. I truly appreciate the positive impact that both Eric and Tyson have made in creating a new culture here at A&T.
As we embrace the leaders of tomorrow, let us remember this inspiring quote, "Leaders aren’t born; they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work." – Vince Lombardi-
As we continue on our journey, I want to remind you of some important resources available to our students. Our certified A&T teachers provide tutoring in every subject area on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please encourage your children to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to enhance their learning.
Communication is key to our success and we strive to keep you informed through our newsletters and virtual parent meetings. Don’t forget, we have virtual parent-teacher conferences coming up March 11th from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. This is a valuable opportunity for you to connect with our educators and strengthen the communication loop between home and school.
Thank you for your continued support in fostering a thriving environment for our young leaders. Together, we are making a difference!
Warm regards,
David Reese, Principal
Southfield A&T High School

Southfield A&T’s Teen Court Club: Bringing Justice and Education to Life
Southfield A&T’s Teen Court Club, led by the dedicated Ms. Monique Williams, is making a real impact in the community by actively participating in the Oakland County Teen Court. Every month, these passionate students step into the courtroom, taking on roles as attorneys, bailiffs, and jurors under the authority of Judge Cindy Arvant of the 46th District Court. Their mission? To serve justice while offering their peers a valuable second chance.
Teen Court provides students who have committed real offenses the opportunity to face a jury of their peers rather than going through the traditional juvenile justice system. Through this program, not only do participants take accountability for their actions, but the Teen Court members gain hands-on experience with the United States justice system—learning the ins and outs of law, ethics, and civic responsibility.
This is more than just a club; it’s a powerful educational experience that prepares students for future careers in law and public service while making a real difference in the lives of their peers. Kudos to Ms. Williams and her remarkable team for their commitment to justice, education, and community impact!

Magnet Exchange
The National Clay Magnet Exchange is on display in the O-House display case. Students who were in Mrs. McNeece first semester classes may come to choose a magnet as a trade for the magnet they created. This is the third year of the program. Students during the first semester created a clay magnet that represented "We Grow Together" (what we grow in Michigan). We then sent 70 magnets and postcards to Las Vegas in January and received our box back during winter break.
AdCraft
On Friday, February 28, 35 students from the Marketing & Entrepreneurship, Radio/TV Production and Digital/Multimedia Academies at A&T participated in AdCraft Detroit's "FutureCraft" (see photos) event at the College for Creative Studies Taubman Center in Detroit. Marketing Teacher Mrs. Dunn, Digital/Multimedia Teacher Mrs. Brown-Perkins and Mrs. Williams from the A&T College & Career Center accompanied the students.
Hosted by AdCraft Detroit in partnership with Buick and GMC, the FutureCraft special day of learning was meant to inspire, educate and engage diverse high school students in and around metro Detroit!
Our students experienced:
Talks from accomplished Media professionals and partners that support Buick/ GMC,
An insider’s look at a dream job in the marketing and advertising industry, and
Networking with Adcraft Detroit Members!
Afternoon breakout sessions for the students included hearing from young professionals working at YouTube, Snap, Pinterest and Netflix.
Nominated by Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Dunn, A&T seniors Micah Owens and Marquis Carson (see photos) each earned an AdCraft $1,000 scholarship at the event. They were recognized for their outstanding leadership, commitment to learning and unique potential.
WARRIOR ATHLETICS
Wrestling
Our boys Wrestling Team re-appeared on the mats this school year and represented us well, placing in every event. Kenneth Brooks advanced to Regionals with a 25-3 record but came up short for the Championship. We could not be more proud of them and we can't wait to see what they do next season.
Boys Basketball
Our Boys Basketball Team may not have had the season that they hoped for, however we have enjoyed watching them play strong together. They will lose five seniors this year and we are wishing them all well in their journey. We can't wait to watch them come back better next season.
Girls Basketball
Girls’ Basketball has had their best season of the past five years and even clinched the #1 seed spot for Districts! They finished 15-6 with a tough four point loss. They will lose three seniors this year. They are all matriculating to college and we can't wait to see the great things in store for them.
Competitive Cheer
Our Competitive Cheer Team competed in Districts and received their highest score to date. Even though they did not win, they gave it their all and continued to shine bright. They worked closely with our Middle School teams to prepare them for Cheer Competition as well. We love how they continue to evolve and expand.
Bowling
Bowling was fun to watch this year as well and Jaysa Taylor truly stood out! Jaysa won the OAA Conference for girls with a high game 278 and high series. She swept first place in every category and won first place in our division for Regionals. This qualified her for the States Singles where she came in 27th place out of 57. She was supported by her team and the Warrior family.
Swimming
Our Swim Team celebrated Senior Night in honor of two seniors who have been doing great things! Tanner competed in preliminaries, and finals in the OAA Blue League. He won OAA Blue League Champion (1st Place) in 100 Breaststroke and 50 Freestyle. The relay team placed 3rd in the 200 Freestyle Relay (OAA Blue League Finals) . We can't wait to support Tanner in the MHSAA State Championship in the 50 Freestyle and the 100 Breaststroke next weekend.
As our Winter Sports come to an end, be on the lookout for off season opportunities to stay connected to your sport and to get better. However, we have all of our Spring Sports kicking off on Monday, March 10, 2025. If you are interested in trying something new , please come to the Softball, Baseball, Girls Soccer, Boys Golf, Girls Tennis and Track and Field tryouts next week. We would love to have you join our Warrior Family!

Leaders In Action #6 - written by Paris Whitman
February was a month of outstanding accomplishments, recognition, and school spirit. From statewide leadership awards to prestigious scholarships, our leaders continue to set the bar high.
Success at Student Council State Conference!
History was made at the 2025 Michigan Student Council Conference as our Student Council chapter earned multiple awards and set a new standard of excellence! For the first time in 11 years, our school received the Award of Excellence. This award is given to student councils that demonstrate exceptional leadership, organization, and engagement throughout the school year. It is a testament to the dedication of our leaders. The Student Council was also rewarded with the Star School and State Charity Awards for our commitment to service and leadership. These awards recognize the school and community-wide contributions, honoring schools that strive to always make a difference.
We are also proud to recognize the individual achievements of some of our members:
Janiya McCaskey was one of 40 students from over 100 applicants honored with the Unsung Hero Award. This award is given to student leaders who make a big impact behind the scenes. These recipients may not always be highlighted for their dedication to their chapter, but do so anyway for the success of it.
Tyson Howard was the 2025 winner of the Student of the Year Award, shining brighter than nearly 100 applicants. This award is one of the highest individual awards given by MASC/MAHS. It recognizes student leaders who demonstrate exceptional leadership, service, and dedication to their school and community.
These achievements highlight the exceptional work of our Student Council, and we couldn’t be more proud of their success.
Black & Positively Golden Scholarship Recipient
A huge congratulations goes out to our Class of 2025 President, Student Council Executive, and Student Board Representative Eric “making sure everyone has a seat at the table” Spragins for receiving the Black & Positively Golden Scholarship. This scholarship is sponsored by McDonald’s and given to leaders because of their commitment to service, leadership, and advocacy. Its goal is to support bright minds who plan on attending an HBCU. His impact goes beyond our halls as he is also a part of the NAACP. Eric Spragins has been an inspiration at Southfield A&T. We are excited to watch where the future will take him.
Senior Pinning Ceremony: A Night to Remember
The Senior Pinning Ceremony was an incredible success! With an amazing turnout of attendees, the seniors were celebrated for their journey and achievements as they prepare for their next chapter. This tradition marks the transition from high school to adulthood, which is an important milestone in their lives.
Among the highlights of the night was Jaylah Robinson’s breathtaking performance. It further added to the event's heartfelt atmosphere, which brought family, friends, and faculty together to honor the Class of 2025.
Special appreciation to the efforts of the National Honor Society, the Junior Class Board, and others who volunteered, making the event successful and memorable for all involved.
To the Class of 2025, Congratulations! We are looking forward to seeing all that you achieve.
Black History Play
We powerfully ended Black History Month with the annual Black History Play, hosted by Ms. M Williams. Students from her social studies classes took part in the performance, making it an engaging and impactful display of Black History and culture. Ninety-five percent of the skits and dances were created by the performers. The reactions from the crowd are something many won’t forget. They were captivating, which made the conclusion to our month-long celebration all the more meaningful.
With the months to come, let’s continue to strive for greatness—the Warrior Way!
