The Connection Week 6 Term 2
Huapai District School 9th June 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
This week has been one of many recently that has highlighted the power of team.
Overseas military troops can often have trade skill sets so refined and individualised that if a single person is taken out, the others have no knowledge of how to perform the task and the operation comes to a halt while a new specialist is shipped in. NZ military personnel are rotated regularly through trades in order to avoid this very situation. Wide skill sets are developed and the team can pull together to be able to continue.
Over the past few weeks, we are so proud of the way our school community team has been able to continue operating despite members of the team being out. Student teams, teaching teams, support staff teams, the senior leadership team, parent teams, sports teams - not one of these Huapai teams has escaped the impact of having a “man down”. Despite, or at times, because of these situations, the team pulls together tighter and we “find a way”. I believe that it is often during these times that new skills are found, new talents are realised and new levels of awesomeness are reached. It is very hard to mentally go back to the way things were before.
We’ve had glitching technology, students without their regular support, classes without their usual teachers, students missing half their project group, teachers supporting relievers on both sides of their own classroom, parents bringing half their street to school, teams without subs, teaching staff operating the office phone system on their break - through this all we have been able to continue operating at an extremely high level.
Thank you to every member of our school community who has stepped up and into a role they would not usually be in. Together we are a very powerful team; one with wide skill sets and one that we can all be very proud to be a member of.

Matariki - School Closed
Friday 24th June
In Māori culture, Matariki is both the name of the Pleiades star cluster and of the celebration of its first rising in late June or early July. This marked the beginning of the new year in the Māori lunar calendar.
In New Zealand, 2022 is the first year Matariki is being recognised with a public holiday. Therefore please note, the school will be closed.
Disco - Save The Date!
Are you ready to get your glow on??
Our HFN are excited to announce a date for the school disco - Thursday 7th July. More details to come out next week.
Emergency Lockdown Training
Last Friday we put our leadership and Ops team through an Emergency Lockdown training exercise. Emergency Lockdowns (as opposed to COVID lockdowns) can occur for all sorts of reasons. Primarily it is about securing the site to ensure student safety. Situations such as wild dogs on site, a weather situation, or a situation or activity that we want children excluded from that is close by i.e. car accident, domestic situation and in the worse case - an armed event. We will be running an emergency lockdown practice with students later this term. This will involve parents in testing our communication processes also. We will advise parents when this will occur.

Top 10 Playgounds In Auckland
A fun way to spend a day is to do a playground crawl. You could level this up by having the children rate each one and make notes on your favourite to redesign with lego at home.
