Joyfully Embracing Our Mission
St. Clare School Family News | 31 May 2020
Come! Live in the Light!
You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?
It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
You are the light of the world.
A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket;
it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house.
Just so, your light must shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.
~ Matthew 5:13-16
Dear St. Clare School Families,
On this Pentecost Sunday, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples and were sent forth on a mission of love, let us pray for our communities struggling to make sense of the events surrounding George Floyd’s death. Read Bishop Cantú’s Message HERE. Our role in the formation of children is made even more critically important in light of what we are witnessing these days in downtown San Jose, Minneapolis and other parts of the Bay Area and the nation. We pray to the Holy Spirit to give us the wisdom to speak to our children about the evils of racism and to have the fortitude to teach them to stand against injustice and work towards peace and solidarity.
CONGRATULATIONS, CLASS OF 2020!
On Friday, we gathered virtually as a school community to send off our graduates with a Baccalaureate Mass, followed by a very special Graduation Ceremony. In the afternoon, each family had a private diploma moment where each student was presented with his or her diploma by a parent in the beautiful Rectory Garden. At 5:15, teachers and other St. Clare School families gathered on the sidewalk by the school to cheer on the Class of 2020 and their families as they paraded with pride and joy. May 29, 2020 will live on in the memories of those who were present: that we were able to share the love we have for one another during these very challenging times. We will miss them and pray that they remain in God's light!
Many thanks to the Class of 2021 for preparing a very special keepsake and video for the graduates. A special thanks to Sigrid Jacobsen for coordinating the program created by Becki Allison and the video created by Leana Dalton.
Most of all, thank you to Jen Pham, Warni Chee, Hazel Alabado, the Agustins and all the parents who helped decorate the campus for the day's festivities. We hope our Class of 2020 felt the love from all the way around. (Watch the parade video posted on the St. Clare School Facebook page.)
SUMMER DAY CARE SURVEY FOR ESSENTIAL WORKERS
If you are interested in attending the Summer Day Care program which will run from July 6- July 31, please complete the SURVEY by June 5. (Only families interested in a program need to respond to the survey.) We need to get enough interest to be able to even consider offering the program. In addition, we need assurance that we can pay for the staffing and program support before we can commit to hiring personnel.
A variety of options exist for online summer programs including our very own Ildeko Stennis’ Camp Captivate. Our teachers will work on Summer Bridge templates for our students to follow to avoid summer slide and keep them engaged in learning. More importantly, research shows the importance of reading together as a family. HERE is a wonderful guide from the Sonoma County Office of Education to help families create a culture of reading at home.
END OF THE YEAR CELEBRATIONS FOR TK-7
If you haven’t yet done so, please sign up for a slot to pick up/drop off items at school before the school year ends. It’s an opportunity for students and teachers, should you wish to avail of it, to provide a sense of celebration and closure for the end of the school year. Here is the SIGN UP link.
Please follow these protocols:
A student and one adult chaperone from the same household may come to school as long as no one in the household has tested positive or has been exposed to COVID-19 and has exhibited symptoms of cold/flu or respiratory ailment in the past 14 days.
Those coming on campus must wear a face covering (anyone older than 6 years) and may be subject to health screening (temperature check and assessment questions).
There will be no access to restrooms or water fountains/refilling stations while at school.
Hand sanitizing stations will be made available at the entrances and exits.
More importantly, please prepare your students for our current reality: that we will all be wearing face coverings and we won’t be able to be as close or be in physical contact with one another.
Please contact your teachers directly if you have any questions or concerns.
KEEP PRACTICING HEALTH AND SAFETY PROTOCOLS AT HOME
As we prepare to return back to school, now is a good time to practice being mindful of health and safety protocols which we practiced while we were at school during the flu season:
Check for temperatures regularly and watch for a change in energy level.
Wash hands often, with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.
Cough into your sleeve or a cloth tissue.
Sanitize surfaces regularly.
In addition, start to practice these specific self-checks at home to evaluate possible COVID-19 exposure:
Check for symptoms: cough, muscle aches, diarrhea, shortness of breath, headaches, unexplained loss of taste or smell.
Maintain at least 6 feet from others not from your household.
Refrain from touching surfaces or from unnecessary physical contact.
Wear face coverings (for children 6 years and older; exceptions for those with respiratory issues where wearing a face covering makes it difficult to breathe).
