The Battle of the Bluebonnets

Let the battle begin......

The Mission CISD Battle of the Bluebonnets competition was created eight years ago in celebration of the Texas Library Association Bluebonnet Award Books. This statewide initiative encourages 3rd - 6th grade students to read 20 Bluebonnet Award books; and, exercise powers of selection and interest while developing lifetime reading skills.

Since 2010, fourteen elementary schools and four junior high schools have participated in this district-wide competition answering questions demonstrating their knowledge and comprehension of the 20 Bluebonnet Award books. Challenging questions regarding plot, setting and characters are used to determine the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.

The Eighth Annual Battle of the Bluebonnets

The "battle" will take place in the gymnasium. At the conclusion, the student participants will be feted to a luncheon at the Kenneth White JHS Library featuring visiting author, Mr. David Bowles, a UTRGV professor/author; and, the 2016 winner of the Pura Belpre Latino literary award. The Pura Belpre national award is presented to an Hispanic writer or illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth. Mr. Bowles will share an excerpt from his most recent publication, The Smoking Mirror.
