Davis Students & Families,

Recently Davis has experienced two concerning incidents involving students bringing firearms to the school. We have taken a number of steps as a response to increase safety at the building.

First, we have altered our entrance procedures at the school. Beginning in January, all who enter the building must use the southeast entrance where there is an x-ray screening machine and metal detector. This includes all students throughout the school day, as well as parents and guests.

Second, we have installed alarms on the southwest door that sounds when the door is opened. This door will no longer be used by anyone, except at the Davis dismissal and in the case of an emergency. The entrance also has signs posted informing students that they are not to open the door for anyone.

Third, we have met with the student council to get input on ways to increase school safety, including developing ways to allow students to anonymously report safety concerns of any kind to the administration.

Fourth, we will be meeting with students by grade level next week to discuss school safety and to hear their perspective. Many students have questions, concerns, and ideas for how to make our community more safe. In order to ensure your child feels comfortable and safe in the building, their voice must be heard. I encourage you to speak with your child about the issue of school safety, and encourage them to participate in our grade level meetings so that we can best support them. I will be sending out communication to parents after we have the meetings with an update on student responses and any further steps we may take as a community.

As always, please encourage your child that if they are aware of any safety-related concern that they either report it to an adult at school, or to you so that you can call the school on their behalf.

Due to the large snowstorm we are expecting over the next few days, we will be holding classes remotely on Friday, February 4th. HERE are the instructions for logging in to Zoom classes. Students will attend their classes and Crew in the morning, and will have a grade level study hall in the afternoon where teachers will be available to help students in breakout rooms.

BRRR It's cold outside our school If you pick up your students after school, please remember that dismissal is at 3:15PM and students must wait outside to be picked up. We appreciate you doing your best to arrive as close to 3:15PM as possible.

We continue to offer: Drone Club, Fab Lab Club, and Robotics Club. New this semester are:

-ART CLUB: Tuesdays

-GAME CHANGERS CLUB (for girls): Mondays & Fridays

-OPERATION COMIC BOOK: Thursdays

When students are absent, for any reason other than quarantine, they have 1 week to complete and submit their work to their teachers. After this, the student will receive a 0% for the assignment, which negatively affects their overall grade.

Teachers have their make up work posted in their classroom or on their Schoology page. It is the student's responsibility to know where to find their teacher's make up work, to actively seek out and complete the work, and to follow up with teachers if extra help is needed.

Students returning from quarantine will receive a condensed list of assignments and extended due dates upon return. The day a student returns from quarantine, he/she should report to Mr. Rivera in the planning center, and he will help them collect and organize their make up work.

SENIORS PARENTS Now that second semester has started, your student's focus should be finding money for whatever their plans are for next year.

If you and your student have not yet completed the FAFSA, be sure to complete it ASAP. You can potentially immediately unlock over $10,000 for college, and then become eligible for even more free money. If you and/or your student needs help with the process or have any questions, please contact Mr. Markusic by email (mmarkusic@collegenowgc.org) or by phone/text (216-507-1768).

Students should also be searching for and applying for scholarships. Seniors received a scholarship list last week that is updated as Mr. McCain, Ms. Molton, and Mr. Markusic become aware of scholarships.

Support is available on EVERYDAY 3:15 - 4:15 in the 5th floor atrium. Snacks are provided.

Encourage your student to stay after to stay on top of schoolwork, get organized, receive extra help on assignments, complete make-up work, or complete homework.

Youth Opportunities Unlimited (Y.O.U.) is searching for high school sophomore and junior students with a 2.5 GPA or higher who are interested in gaining professional skills and hands-on career exploration experience while earning a stipend. If this sounds like you, apply to the PEEKE (Partnerships, Exploration, Experience, Knowledge, Excellence) Internship Program!

Previous internship opportunities included the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Metroparks, Cleveland Clinic, the YMCA, and more! This is a great opportunity to explore career pathways in STEM, Health Science, Education, Cosmetology, Business Ownership, Culinary Arts, and more!

Do you want to develop your professional skills and explore career pathways while earning an income? Youth Opportunities Unlimited (Y.O.U.) is looking for high school students between the ages of 14-19 years old and living in Cuyahoga County to apply to their Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP)!

The SYEP is generally 6 weeks long and starts in June and will run through the end of July/beginning of August. No previous work experience is required. If you are 14 or 15 years old, you will need a work permit in order to apply. The pay rate ranges from $8.80-$10 per hour, depending on where you are placed!

"For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) is an international youth organization that operates the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). This year, PHASTAR has partnered with the Great Lakes Science Center and the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) to support Davis A&M students in building and programming a robot to enter the FIRST Robotics Buckeye Regional Competition from March 23rd-26th at Cleveland State University’s Wolstein Center. Every Tuesday and Thursday until March 22nd, the Davis A&M Team 8222, The RoboAviators, travel to the Great Lakes Science Center to work with mentors, coaches, programmers, and engineers, along with three other CMSD FIRST FRC teams, to strategize and build their robot.

This year's challenge is called RapidReact and is presented by the Boeing Company. The challenge is to build an operating robot that has the capabilities of scoring cargo (oversized tennis balls) into a two-level hub and climb up a hanger with four different heights. You can watch an animated video of the challenge here. Currently, Team 8222 has built the main frame of the robot and have installed the motor mounts and motors and will begin drawing up the electrical schematics. Davis will host its fresh produce market this NEXT Thursday. The market is open to all Davis A&M students, families, and community. Please spread the word.
