Our Learning Community...
As we welcome November, it is the perfect time to reflect on gratitude. Practicing gratitude helps us notice and appreciate the big and little things that make our lives meaningful. Here are some ways you can nurture gratitude at home...
Family Gratitude Practices:
- Gratitude Jars: Start a family gratitude jar. Each day, write something you’re thankful for on a slip of paper and place it in the jar. At the end of the month, read all the notes together and reflect on your family’s blessings.
- Thankfulness Conversations: During family meals or bedtime, take turns sharing something that made you feel grateful that day. This practice can build strong connections and boost everyone's mood.
- Gratitude Letters or Drawings: Encourage your child to create a thank-you card or drawing for someone they appreciate. Whether it is a teacher, friend, or family member, expressing thanks through words or art can make someone’s day extra special.
- Acts of Kindness: Practice gratitude through giving! Spend a day together helping others, whether it is a neighbor, friend, or community organization. Acts of kindness remind us of the joy of giving and create beautiful memories.
- Gratitude Walks: Go for a family walk and share what you are grateful for in your surroundings. It is a wonderful way to practice mindfulness and appreciate nature together.
We are excited to celebrate gratitude all month long and hope these ideas inspire meaningful moments with your family.
SD United for Democracy...
Starting this weekend and through Tuesday, the Jones Auditorium will be a neighborhood voting location. We are honored to support the democratic process and provide a safe, accessible space for our community to come together and exercise this important civic duty. Voters will only have access to the auditorium. They will be separated from students and staff during the school day, so the instructional day will continue as planned. We are grateful to be part of such an engaged community and appreciate your understanding as we open our doors to neighbors on Election Day. Thank you for supporting this effort and for encouraging our students in understanding the value of civic participation.
As a school district, San Diego Unified is dedicated to fostering a vibrant, informed, and engaged community through the power of education and dialogue. To help our students to be collaborative communicators, socially-aware agents of change, and critically-thinking digital citizens, our nonpartisan SD Unified for Democracy project offers resources to develop skills to engage in civil discourse, identify bias and credibility, debate and maintain a focus on issues, and repair harm that arises from political rhetoric.
The link below offers resources and tools adults can use to engage with and learn alongside children and teens during the election cycle and beyond.
Safety Patrol: Did you know?
School Safety Patrol Position Responsibilities
School safety patrols play a crucial role in enhancing the safety of students and improving school environments. They promote student safety through Traffic Management by helping monitor crosswalks, guiding their peers to follow traffic safety rules and ensuring a safer environment around the school. They also help Prevent Accidents by being present in key areas like crosswalks and sidewalks, making sure students are safely guided through high-traffic areas.
When our safety patrol members are on duty they have specific roles. Their whistles and signals have specific meaning, so keep reading to better understand their respective duties. Complying with our safety patrol directives and supporting them as they keep our community safe is greatly appreciated!
STAFF:
The STAFF patrol member is the main set of eyes and ears of the squad, they are watching for approaching pedestrians and cars. They stand on the corner and are responsible for controlling cars and pedestrians through voice, hand and whistle commands:
1 whistle signals the signs to come down and stop traffic.
2 whistles signal that all traffic has stopped, cars in the intersection have been waved on, and it is safe for people to cross.
3 whistles signal the signs to come up so that traffic may proceed forward.
4 whistles signal that the shift is about to end and everyone needs to prepare for the checker to collect cones.
The STAFF person keeps the staff lowered to indicate to pedestrians that they should not pass it or the STAFF person. The STAFF person also communicates with families, asking them to stop as needed so that they can allow cars who have been waiting to move forward.
EXTRA STAFF:
The EXTRA STAFF patrol member stands on the corner across the street from the staff person blowing the whistles. They support the staff person by holding hands out to cars at both stop signs where there are no Patrol members or signs. They make eye contact with drivers to let them know that the hand signals are for them.
SIGNS:
Like the staff person, the SIGN patrol member also has the job of providing eyes and ears for the squad, watching for approaching pedestrians and cars and assisting the staff person in directions and reminders.
CHECKER:
The CHECKER patrol member writes down violations made by cars and pedestrians and watches for unsafe situations. They highlight license plates that consistently commit the same violations so that the San Diego Police Department Officer can address them.

Highlights from last week...
Singing letter songs in preschool! Songs combine music, rhythm, and language to make learning letters engaging and memorable!
Identifying the letter of the day in UTK! Letter recognition is a foundation for literacy, it is the first step toward understanding that letters form words and words carry meaning.
Sight word practice in Kindergarten! Sight words are high-frequency words that appear often in texts. Sight words build the foundation for early reading skills, helping young readers gain confidence, fluency, and focus on the meaning of a sentence.
4th graders during P.E.! Students are improving hand-eye coordination, building motor skills and strength, and growing social skills through teamwork.
3rd graders learning to play the recorder! Learning to play an instrument improves fine motor skills, boosts listening skills, and enhances focus. Music involves counting, patterns, and timing, which align closely with mathematical concepts.
4th & 5th graders participating in the virtual One Book, One San Diego 2024 Kids Author and Illustrator Event. Students met María Delores Águila and Magdalena Mora who wrote and illustrated Barrio Rising: The Protest that Built Chicano Park.
