SVLA Newsletter for April 2024
SVLA is the K-8 parent partnership at CVLO Central Valley Learning Options
PTO Open Gym Monday, April 8th
April 8th is the last SVLA day at the HUB!
On Monday, April 8th from 12:30PM-1:20PM come enjoy some time with our SVLA families. All ages are invited and parent supervision of non-SVLA siblings is requested.
Reminder: there are no elementary workshops this week, so transportation for elementary students will be provided by indivisual families.
For middle school students, a bus will drop them off at the HUB, but this is the last week to pick up your middle school student at the HUB at 1:20PM. Starting April 15th, K-8 pick-up will be at school.
Learning Showcase
Calling all Middle School parents! This is our final learning showcase to kick off 4th quarter learning here at SVLA. Students will attend classes from 8:40-10:40 and parents and students are invited to attend to view projects, engage in discussions, and prepare for the upcoming quarter.
Learning Highlights Middle School Science
March Mammal Madness 2024
March Mammal Madness (MMM) is an international science event inspired by the NCAA basketball tournament, where instead of basketball teams, a selection of organisms "compete" against each other. The winners are decided based on scientific data and research and a the element of surprise. Students researched the animals and created brackets based on their research. Not all matches happen the way you think they will--in the matchup between an elephant and a bee, the buzzing of the bee made the elephant turn and leave the field of battle! (Click the image below for more MMM information.)
Fourth Quarter Elementary Workshops
Elementary Workshop dates and warm weather reminder:
Our workshop weeks are: Monday April 15, April 22, April 29, May 6th, May 13, and May 20 from 11:20am-1:20pm.

Warm Weather Reminder: As we approach the sunshine-filled days of 4th quarter we will be having PE on the playground instead of at the HUB. Please remember to send your student(s) to school with a water bottle.
(Registration is now closed for Q4 workshops, but your student(s) can still participate in these PTO-sponsored events: "Once Upon a Lily Pad" musical, Happy Found Farms field trip, Fund Run, and End-of-Year Celebration.)
Be a TEST PREP Superhero!
This spring our students in grades 3-8 will take the Smarter Balanced math and language arts state tests. Students in grades 5 and 8 will also take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS). The results from these tests will give a more accurate picture of whether students are on track to be ready for college or career, what we simply call future ready.
A great tool you can use at home to help your students better prepare for state testing is at the Smarter Balanced testing training site. Visit https://bit.ly/wastatetesting for more information.
For a Smarter Balanced practice test https://bit.ly/sbatraining is a great site to visit. Practice tests boost confidence and help students understand how to better interact with the testing site.
And while this is not a learning tool specific to state testing, parents can create an account for students at the typing.com website. Practicing basic keyboarding skills before testing is great for boosting confidence during testing.
