Muckleshoot Tribal School
May 2024
Chief School Administrator
We are heading into the final months of an amazing school year. Last April, our students came together as a united student body and took the “No Place for Hate” pledge to promote a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment for all.
May is an important month because the Smarter Balanced Assessments will be administered from May 6, 2024, to May 17, 2024. Smarter Balanced Assessments are annual tests in English language arts/literacy and mathematics for grades 3-8 and 11. These tests provide an academic checkup for students by measuring real-world skills like critical thinking and problem-solving.
Families can support their students by ensuring they get a good night’s rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive at school on time. Go, Kings!

Elementary
April was a wonderful month for our elementary students! We have had several fun events this past month.
We had Kindergarten Round-up where we introduced our school to our incoming Kindergartners for next year.
We also kicked off our No Place for Hate Initiative during circle and our team went around and had every class sign the pledge.
We also had several field trips in April. The first graders went to both Saltwater State Park and Vashon Island as a part of the Mountain to Sound program. The fourth graders completed three sessions of swimming lessons at the Health and Wellness.
Ms. Connie’s class got to participate in a very special project with UW. The purpose of the mural project/painting is to revitalize the carver’s room in the Center for American Indian and Indigenous Studies (CAIIS), into a space that is welcoming and grounded in community. To achieve this, the Muckleshoot Tribal School’s 1st graders and Native, University of Washington (UW) students will collaborate on a mural that will represent the importance of finding local community and youth engagements that enrich both current and prospective Native UW student’s experience at the University. The mural intends to reflect Native students' tribal heritage and values of Native communities, by empowering the Muckleshoot Tribal School’s 1st grade class to practice coast salish form line art, and hand paint designs on the canoes. The collaborative mural will not only be a product of learning and enrichment it will also provide an opportunity for Native youth to see themselves represented in higher education.
Secondary
April was an amazing month for secondary students. Our middle and high school students took the No Place for Hate pledge to work together in fighting bullying and intimidation at MTS. Students from both elementary and secondary were invited to the Special Olympics Kick-Off and learned about fitness and inclusion in a unified setting.
In addition to the fun activities and social learning, we are preparing for students to take the SBA state testing in May. Please ensure students are well-rested and ready to show all they have learned this year!
NYCP Activities
NYCP (Native Youth Community Project) took 11 students on a tour of Renton Technical College. Students learned about exciting careers in culinary, baking, automotive, auto body, rivian technician, phlebotomy, veterinary and dental assisting, and welding!
NYCP took 2 students on a tour of Microsoft. They were able to learn more about career opportunities and the history of Microsoft!
NYCP took 8 students on a tour of the University of Puget Sound with the Education Department. These students expressed an interest in a career in Education and got the opportunity to see how to start that journey! Students toured the campus, sat in a stimulated class setting, and connected with the Native group on campus!
NYCP took 7 students to the Port of Seattle to learn about internship and career opportunities! Students got to tour the communications room with dozens of monitors tracking all the cameras! We also got to see the views from the top of Sea Tac Airport!
