IS KINDNESS NATURAL OR LEARNED?
Is kindness an inherent trait or is it something we learn through experience? Psychologists, social scientists, and other researchers say it's both. Not only are we predisposed to being kind, we can increase our capacity for kindness throughout our lives.
The American Psychological Association (APA) defines kindness as “benevolent and helpful action intentionally directed toward another person. Kindness is often considered to be motivated by the desire to help another, not to gain explicit reward or to avoid explicit punishment.”
Babies are naturally empathetic and kind. For example, toddlers have been shown to help adults, without being asked, whether their parents are in the room or not, and even without being thanked,” according to “Building Kinder Brains: A 10 Billion Neuron Network,” a report from the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
In an article for UNESCO’s The Blue Dot, university professors Michael Karlin and Brendan Ozawa-de Silva underscore Keltner’s findings: “As with all mammals and birds, we are not self-sufficient at birth, or even for several years thereafter. Therefore, this basic need for care means that even on a cellular level—deep within our biology and physiology—we respond to kindness. We are interdependent and our bodies know it. KINDNESS WINNERS!
These students were recognized for their display of Indianific Kindness towards others in the building. Some of these kind acts include showing empathy towards students with medical issues, giving money to a fellow student who was in need, assisting and volunteering to fill the birdbath with water every day in the courtyard, and inviting new peers to take part in group activities. TEEN MENTAL HEALTH FISRT AID (tMHFA)
Toms River Regional Schools will conduct teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA) training for students in grade 10 beginning on November 19, 2024 through January 17, 2025. This is an evidence-based training that teaches teens how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges in their friends and peers. The training will be conducted by RWJ Barnabas, which gives teens the skills they need to have supportive conversations with their friends and emphasizes the importance of getting help from a responsible and trusted adult. If you have any questions about tMHFA or concerns about your teen’s participation in the training, please attend the virtual parent/guardian meeting on November 4th at 6:00 pm.

THE WRITING CENTER
The Toms River High School South Writing Center will be opening soon!
It is a safe, quiet, welcoming place for students to receive assistance with writing and homework assignments. Our overall goal is to have enough tutors to assist all students needing help, no matter the subject.
The Writing Center will be available to students after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:35 to 2:30.
We are currently looking for more volunteers with solid communication skills (both verbal and written) who excel in Math, English, Science, and History. Volunteer hours are available, and tutoring spots are limited.
All are welcome!
GIRLS TENNIS
The Girls Varsity Tennis team has officially concluded their matches for the year following a hard-fought season. The Indian net-women collectively gave their all despite all the adversities they faced. After a complete overhaul on their division to go up against many of the top teams in Monmouth/Ocean counties, adjusting to a new line-up after graduating several starting seniors last year, and pushing through numerous injuries and illnesses, the girls truly put their all into the 2024 fall season. Senior Co-Captains Madelyn Raimann and Sophia Sharkey were rocks for their team this year through it all. The senior-captain duo helped the girls stay positive throughout a tough season by organizing team bonding events, motivating the team before matches, and mentoring any/all underclassmen that looked to them for support. Congratulations to these senior captains, as well as all seniors (Ally Malek, Daisy Hart, Michelina Ferrara), and the fearless juniors (Kendra Capelli and Joey Alsobrooks) who will be taking over the team next season
GIRLS FIELD HOCKEY
The girls Field Hockey Program finished 2nd in their new conference this year. Hitting several milestones like: our Goalie, Brielle Berruti, breaking the school record for career saves and recording her 500th save, and multiple Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshman being named to the list of top players in the Shore Conference. We have also focused on Mental Health with Angela Teeple from All-In Athletics, putting emphasis on our mental health first and participating in our 2nd annual photo scavenger hunt. Recently we celebrated Seminole Night on Oct 7th and look forward to welcoming the incoming Freshman next season. Follow us on our new instagram @trsfhockey for updates throughout the rest of the season as we head into Shore Conference Tournament and States!

HITTING INDIANS FOOTBALL
The Hitting Indians Football team is 4 - 3 through the first seven games of the season with wins over Raritan, Brick Township, Lacey, and Toms River East. The offense has been led by senior running back Jake Henehan. He has rushed for 1044 yards on 97 attempts with 14 touchdowns. Gio Torres has also been a major contributor on offense with 356 yards rushing and 343 yards passing. The offensive unit has continued to improve and look forward to finishing the season strongly.
The Hitting Indians have been anchored on defense by senior defensive linemen Saviaghn Shepherd and Ian Brown along with senior Linebackers Laolu Akinlolu and Danny Pierson. All four players have had major contributions in each of the Indians games with big time tackles and takeaway opportunities. The defense looks to rise to the occasion versus two upcoming explosive offenses to close out the regular season.
With two games left, Brick Memorial and Central Regional, the Hitting Indians hold their playoff destiny in their own hands and will compete for a share of the Division title versus Central Regional. The team has an opportunity to win back to back division championships for the first time since 1985-1986-1987.
The football program would like to thank the band, the cheerleaders, and all fans for their support throughout the season and hopes to give you a lot more to cheer about in the coming weeks. Letttt's Goooo River! Grrrrr.....Fight!!
