Seasons Change
Dear Atholton Community,
We are wrapping up our Winter Athletics season and transitioning to Spring with tryouts this week. Many of our Winter teams are still in action (or just wrapped up). Kudos to our coaches and athletes for Allied Bowling, Cheerleading, Indoor Track, Girls & Boys Basketball, and Wrestling. Allied Bowling had a great season; Cheerleading worked hard at their competitions this year; and we had two 2nd place finishers at the State track meet (Delbert Cowsette & Gabby Millwood for the 55m dash) and a 3rd place finisher (Katherine Wood for shot put).
Both Boys and Girls Basketball have playoff games this week at River Hill and Oakland Mills, respectively. Wrestling is sending Kailey Arrendondo, Yenah Choe, Mark Enamorado, Chase Garrison, Naima Harvey-Bowen, Jonathan Maslan, Juliana Oxenberg, Sam Salazar, and Justin Soriano to the State Championships this weekend! We wish all of these folks well and you can celebrate them tonight at the Winter Sports Banquet.
Although it isn't officially Spring until the Vernal Equinox on March 19th, the Spring Musical is almost here. See the info below about getting your tickets. The music department is prepping for assessment season, which will all take place before the school takes a much-needed Spring Break starting on March 23rd. Four more weeks...you can make it!
Sincerely,
Nick Novak
Principal
PS-And if the "Seasons Change" title made you think of this 80s gem, you're in luck. (Sometimes I just include these things to see if you're reading or just skimming. Have a great week!)
Important Information-New
Black History Month Assembly Rescheduled
Our Black History Month Assembly was scheduled for February 22nd, but, due to some technical difficulties, we postponed the event to ensure our program was ready for our audiences. Thanks to our performing arts team for their flexibility with reschedules (the stage is being prepped for Once Upon a Mattress and then rehearsals for county music assessments). Long story short--the assemblies will be held on March 13th. We look forward to seeing our students' hard work and celebrating Black History.
Spring Sports Tryouts-March 1st
Tryouts for Spring Sports begin March 1st. All student-athletes MUST have completed paperwork to tryout. HCPSS has developed a portal to submit all your tryout forms. Parents/guardians must use their parental portal to submit paperwork. Click here for step by step directions on how to submit forms online.
Not sure where and when your tryout is happening? Click here for tryout schedule.

Important Information-Reposting
Save the Date for "Once Upon a Mattress"
Many moons ago, on Freetown road, the drama department has been preparing for a magical show! Come see Atholton's Spring Production of Once Upon a Mattress March 7, 8, and 9th! Student Tickets are $10, and general admission is $14. Purchase tickets at the Booktix website or scan one of the QR codes on the posters around the school! Don't be shy, and see you there!
Help AHS Recycle More and Earn a New Trex Bench
Send in your plastic bags and plastic over wrap (around water bottle cases) with your student and have them place it in one of their teachers' Plastic Bag Recycling Bins or the Big White Recycling Bin in the vestibule out front. You could help the Green team earn a New Trex Bench! You would also be saving all of the plastic bags and plastic film from the landfill Not sure what can be recycled? Check out the flyer below. Any Questions about this program, see Mrs. Schwab.
Attendance at Extra Curricular Events
With playoffs coming up, we wanted to take a moment to remind parents about how student behavior can impact extracurricular event attendance. Students are expected to follow the HCPSS Student Code of Conduct. In instances when a student violates the student code of conduct, the administrative team may deem it necessary to prohibit student attendance to future extracurricular activities. This may include, but not be limited to, dances, athletic events, concerts, performing arts plays/musicals, and club sponsored activities. The administrative team will notify students and parents/guardian in advance of these actions.
New Attendance Kiosks
HCPSS is equipping all high schools with attendance kiosks to help expedite the check-in/attendance procedure in the morning. Beginning March 5th, all students will need to be prepared to use the attendance kiosks if they are late to school/class first period. Here's what you need to know/do:
- Students should report directly to class before 7:50am.
- Anyone arriving after 7:50am will need to check-in at the attendance kiosks in the front lobby.
- To use the attendance kiosk, students will need to download the Synergy Student Vue app on their phone (available for Apple and Android operating systems).
- Students without phones will be issued a barcode to use for check-in.
- Once students check-in, they will receive a printed pass to take to class.
- Excuse notes can still be emailed to ahsabsence@hcpss.org or sent in with students.
We will be sharing more information with students and using time during Raidertime/class to ensure students are prepared for the March 5th roll-out of the attendance kiosks. Thanks for taking time to help make sure your student uses the file below to download the app.
