Red Jacket Middle School
Some thoughts for the starting school year
October 2024
Principal's Message
Hello RJMS families,
Our Open House evening just ended. What a great night! It was so nice to see everyone. I really appreciate not only the parents and students attending, but all of the extended family members that attended as well. A special shout out to Mrs. Lampley and MS. D’Aiutolo for running the awesome photo booth. A special thank you to the community for supporting our teachers and our school tonight.
We have a presidential election coming up. We will be asking students to dress up in red, white, and blue on that day. Instead of focusing on candidates and political parties, we will be focusing on being a united country and the fact that our democracy gives us the opportunity to vote. We will also emphasize how important it is to exercise your right to vote.
I am looking forward to fall with all of its brilliant colors, cooler days and leaves crunching under my feet. Soon we will be into the gratitude season as I call it. It starts with Thanksgiving and finishes with a New Year. I hope your families get to have some time together experiencing this beautiful fall season. Enjoy!
Classroom Update
The counseling staff will begin meeting with our students in November to discuss the courses they can take next year. In December, the students will be making their course selections for next year. We will forward more information about the selection process to you in November.
Students will be taking assessments such as the STAR universal screener in ELA and Math while some students will also be taking the iReady diagnostic. These assessments help our students understand their skill and knowledge levels, and it helps our teachers understand how they can help our students succeed.
Progress reports will be posted 10/11/24. This is a great time to talk with your student about how they manage their workload, what they do to get help, and how they can make the most out of their education. The students have a great opportunity to meet with their teachers after school from 2:30-3:15 if they need help.
November 8th marks the last day of the first marking period (10 weeks). The grades will be calculated early the following week and posted as soon as the calculations are finished. I am looking forward to seeing how the students do. Please encourage your students to make sure they have all of their work turned in.
School Spotlight
We will be dressing up for Halloween again this year. It was such a great success last year we are going to do it again. Here are our guidelines so Halloween can be a successful day for all.
No masks or otherwise coverings of the student’s face. We need to be able to recognize our students.
No imitation weapons, chains, or tools. No props.
No gore. We share spaces with the elementary students and we do not want to frighten them with zombies or other gorey costumes.
Keep it positive. This is our opportunity for our students to express themselves in a kind, and fun way. This is not an opportunity to make bullying statements towards a person or groups of people.
Undergarments should remain under your garments.
It should be age appropriate. Students should not wear costumes with adult themes.
The dress code applies to Halloween costumes.
Parents, if you want to call ahead of time to verify that your student’s costume will be appropriate, we would welcome the call. 585-289-3967. Students are welcome to stop by the office to tell us about their costume.
Parents will receive a call to pick up their student if the costume is not appropriate. Or, you can bring an appropriate replacement costume to your student.
I am looking forward to seeing all of the great costumes again this year!
