Barbara Homokay - VC School Gardener of the Year
Barbara Homokay, a teacher at Hollywood Beach, has been named one of Ventura County's School Garden Educators of the Year. She was honored last Saturday at Ventura County’s Farm to School Seed Starter's Soiree, held at Faulkner Farms, where she received the inaugural Golden Trowel award.
Her colleagues, who nominated her for the award, shared their admiration:
“Barbara has gone above and beyond to create an amazing garden for our entire school community—teachers, students, and staff alike. She regularly attends Ventura County Farm to School seminars and keeps all of us informed about upcoming events. Barbara shares the knowledge she gains and often volunteers to teach mini-lessons or plant with our students. Even during the hot summers, she faithfully waters the garden, ensuring everything stays alive and thriving. Mrs. Homokay is truly our Hollywood Beach school garden CHAMPION!”
“Students love learning about the foods they grow and eat. The hands-on experience of planting and caring for their garden is a highlight for them. They take pride in harvesting and tasting what they’ve grown—last year’s carrots were a huge hit!”

Cow-lifornia Visits HESD Schools
Exciting days as Cow-lifornia, the dairy cow from Prancer Farms, traveled to multiple schools across the district! Students from all grades participated in a fun and educational Dairy Assembly, led by Ms. Martinez and Cow-lifornia from the local family-owned farm in Santa Paula.
This event, part of the Farm to School program by the Dairy Council of CA, taught our students about the importance of dairy in a healthy diet and the benefits of supporting local farms. A huge thank you to the Dairy Council and Prancer Farms for bringing this wonderful learning experience to our schools!
