First Grade February Newsletter
Dr. Ronald E. McNair Elementary School
Hello February!
We hope everyone is staying healthy and well and that your 2024 is off to a great start!
It was great seeing our first graders so excited at the Culture Museum and sharing their projects. Thank you for helping to make the day such a success!
The first graders successfully completed the first half of the school year and started marking period 3! We are proud of the students for continuing to work hard. We are beginning to discuss with them that it is time to start preparing for 2nd grade as we are halfway there!
Sincerely,
Dr. REMES 1st-Grade Team

OUR MONTH AHEAD
We are finishing Unit 4 - Stories Have a Narrator and then starting Unit 5 - Technology at Work. In this unit, students read and compare selections about inventors and their inventions to understand how technology is made and works. In this unit, we will listen and retell key events in stories, use text features to understand the text better, and compare and contrast 2 texts.
In writing, we will learn about different kinds of sentences and using prepositions in our writing. We will take a piece of writing through the writing process (pre-write, draft, edit and revise and then publish).
MATH
In math, we will start Module 4: Place Value, Comparison, Addition and Subtraction to 40. Module 4 builds upon Module 2's work with place value within 20, now focusing on the role of place value in the addition and subtraction of numbers to 40. We will use our fingers, linking cubes, dimes, and pennies to represent numbers to 40 in various ways-- from all ones to tens and ones. We will learn how to use place value charts to organize units. Lastly, we will compare quantities and begin using the symbols for greater than (>) and less than (<).
SOCIAL STUDIES
This marking period, we will use geographic tools to locate and describe places on Earth. We will also describe places in the environment using geographic characteristics.
AT HOME LEARNING
- Share with your child something you love to do and have them share with you what they love to do. Take time to participate together in what you both love.
- Learn about a past president. You can search for an educational video or head over to the library for a book to read.
WINTER TIME FUN
What do you love to do in the winter? Read to find out what the first grade teachers enjoy and love doing during the season.

When it snows, my family and I enjoy riding our four wheelers with a snow tube on the back. We also like to go snow tubbing too. However, I really just like to snuggle with my cat on the couch and watch movies while sipping on some hot chocolate!
Mrs. Lowe
My favorite winter activity is curling up on the sofa with a hot cup of cocoa while watching a movie or reading a good book. I’m not a fan of cold weather, so staying warm in the house, dreaming of warmer days ahead is where you’ll most likely find me during the winter months.

Mrs. Tsarev
My favorite thing to do in winter is play in the snow. It was so exciting to get a lot of snow this year! My family likes to go to our neighborhood elementary school and sled with friends. We take turns trying out the sleds we bring from home. We always make sure to warm up with hot cocoa when we get home.
