A Message from the Principal
North Families,
As we kick off the second quarter, it is a great time to talk to your children about goal setting. Goal setting, both academically and personally, is a wonderful way to foster a growth mindset. Teaching young adults this skill will serve them in high school and beyond.
Next week, during our quarterly class meetings, we will be discussing goal setting and giving students the following practical tips on developing this skill for themselves.
Goals should be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound
Write your goals down to increase the chance you will achieve them
Establish action steps to achieve the goal
Choose an accountability partner for frequent check-ins
Celebrate milestones, even small ones
Your follow up on these concepts at home will only serve to strengthen the message and help your child learn this important life skill.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Student Success and Accountability Program
As part of our ongoing commitment to the health and well-being of our students, we are pleased to announce an exciting new initiative: a Student Success and Accountability Program at Grosse Pointe South and Grosse Pointe North High Schools. This program is the result of a partnership between our school, the Family Center of Grosse Pointe & Harper Woods, and Face Addiction Now (FAN), an organization dedicated to raising awareness about substance use and addiction.
Our goal is to proactively educate and empower students to make informed, healthy decisions about substance use. We understand that conversations about substance use can be difficult, but they are essential. This program is designed not only to prevent substance use but also to create a supportive environment where students feel empowered to make healthy choices and reach out for help if needed.
The program will include:
- Educational Workshops: FAN will provide the evidence-based, age-appropriate educational sessions that provide students with the latest information on the risks of substance use, including alcohol, vaping, and other drugs.
- Resources for Families: The Family Center will offer ongoing support, including access to educational materials, community services, and family counseling resources if needed.
The sessions will take place on Nov. 11, 25, and Dec. 16 at 7:45 in B103 at North. Snacks will be provided! Please see the flyer below for additional information.

Counseling Corner
Counselors enjoyed seeing our juniors this week for College 101. Ask them about their admissions profile and the goal they set for themselves to enhance their profile. We will be revisiting those goals during our December lesson. Each student explored different post-secondary options through virtual college tours or learned about a day in the life of a trade or the military.
Quarter 1 grades are available for parents. We have NHS tutors available in the counseling center during tutorials as well as before or after school in the library several days each week. Please reach out to your student’s counselor if you have any questions or concerns.
Upcoming College Visits:
Tuesday November 19 - University of Arizona
Tuesday November 21 - Xavier University
Monday November 25 - United States Naval Academy
College Application Reminders for Seniors:
Check your email! Remind your seniors to check their email often so they don’t miss updates or action items that need to be completed from colleges.
Stay organized! We suggest keeping a spreadsheet of all the schools and scholarships with deadlines to help stay organized. A template was shared last year but can also be found HERE.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be available in December. The amount of need-related aid for which a student is eligible is determined by the information they supply annually on the FAFSA. This is a delay from the expected October 1st release. Stay tuned for more information as we receive it.
Does your student’s college require the CSS profile? The CSS profile (College Scholarship Service Profile) is an online application required by numerous colleges to determine eligibility for non-federal financial aid like institutional scholarships and grants. It allows colleges to get a more detailed picture of your family’s financial situation. Check your student’s college websites to see if this is required for your student. You can learn more and start the application process HERE.
Now that your student’s applications are submitted, are you looking for more scholarship opportunities? Check out this list of scholarship sites that you can explore HERE. This is not an exhaustive list.
Beginning in Fall 2024, Michigan high school seniors and recent graduates are eligible for the Community College Guarantee. Click HERE to read more about this opportunity.
Michigan Achievement Scholarship:
The Michigan Achievement Scholarship is designed to help students pursue their dreams, goals and aspirations in the Mitten State! Graduating high school seniors may be eligible for up to $27,500 over five years in financial aid just by filling out the new and simplified FAFSA.
Those who qualify could receive up to $5,500 if they attend a Michigan public university, private college or university or are enrolled in a baccalaureate degree program at a Michigan community college, per year, up to five years
