Gilberts Elementary
Week of January 6th
From the Principal's Desk
Dear Grizzly Parents,
We hope that you enjoyed the holiday break and had time to rest and relax with family. We are so grateful to be back in school with your children. They bring so much energy to our building each day! Thank you for sharing them with us and trusting us as we work to grow their learning.
As we returned to school this week, we took time to review our GOLD expectations with all our students. The safety of our students and staff is our primary concern. Please help us to remind your students daily about keeping hand and feet to self, using kind words and working hard at school.
As a reminder, please do not send your child to school if they are showing symptoms of any illness. This helps protect our entire school population.
Teachers have been working hard on your student’s report card for second quarter. These will now be published on Friday, January 17 by 4:00 PM on the parent portal.
Looking for a great event to do in January? Join us for our Dodgeball for a Cure on Friday, January 31st at Hampshire High School. More information to come soon!
Lastly, if you are a parent who drives your child to school please review the procedures below for everyone’s safety.
Again, Happy New Year! Best wishes in 2025.
Mr. Ruzinok
Principal

Student Drop-Off and Pick-Up
Please be careful when dropping off or picking up your child at school. Cars should arrive between 7:45 A.M. and 8:00 A.M. Supervision begins at 7:45 A.M. Students are marked tardy if they arrive after 8:05 A.M. The safety of our children is most important to us. The following is a list of safety concerns:
Please stay in the car line. Do not cut around the car line. Everyone is trying to drop-off or pick- up their child. Following the pick-up and drop-off lines does not take a long time if everyone obeys the rules.
- Pull all the way to the front of the car line.
- Do not exit your vehicle while in the car line.
- Do not leave your car unattended in the car line. If you need to get out of your car for any reason, please park in the front parking lot. Use the crosswalk and sidewalks to ensure visibility and safety.
- Give buses the right of way. Allow buses to enter and exit the parking lot ahead of you.
Remember to be safe and show each other courtesy when dropping off and picking up your child. The Gilberts Police Department does an excellent job of controlling traffic on Galligan Rd. Please know that there are times when the police officers are called away from the school and are unable to provide traffic control. Thank you for your cooperation.
Notes From the Nurse's Office
Before any medication can be dispensed at school, medication forms must be completed and signed by both a parent and a doctor. Medication and all other over the counter medicines must be kept in the nurse’s office.
Drop-Off and Pick-Up Safety for Car Riders
- Parents should not exit their vehicle in the Kiss & Go Lane to let their child out of the vehicle.
- Students should only be let out on the right side (curbside) of the vehicle.
- If you park, please use the designated crosswalk.
- Please follow direction of staff to pull forward.
- No one should leave their car unattended in the Kiss & Go Lane.
Thank you for keeping safety foremost in your mind before and after school. Safety is our number one priority. Please be kind to your neighbors during arrival and departure times.
Start the Day Off Right
What happens at home affects what happens at school. Your child’s day begins at home, so start it off on a positive note. In the morning, give your child a hug and tell them how proud you are of them. By the time they reach school they’ll be feeling great. Start the day off right!
⛄ Ready for Winter?
The temperature outside is cold. Students should have warm jackets, hats and gloves at school. District policy states that students go outside for recess unless it is below ten degrees. Please send your child to school dressed for the weather.
📘 Read With Your Child
Just like with any other skill, children get better at reading with practice. Research shows that children who spend as little as 30 minutes a day reading are more likely to become good readers. Encourage your child to read each and every day.
Show Your Child that You Care
Children need to know that they are loved and that you are proud of them. To show that you care you can:
- Find ways to say “I love you” every day-no matter what your child’s age.
- Make time to talk with your child and really listen to what they say. Being listened to builds children’s self-esteem and helps them learn.
- Monitor your child’s school work. Talk about their progress and make sure they know that you are proud of their accomplishments.
🏫 Is There School Today?
The district makes every attempt to contact you if school is closed. On your caller ID the district’s Rapid Communication System number appears as (847)551-8394. When you receive a call from this number please listen to the entire message. School closings are posted on the district app and website. School closings are also communicated to local radio and television stations. Look for District 300 not Gilberts Elementary on your television.
