Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students & Families,
As we approach the end of May, CHS is vibrant with activities and students showing off their talents. Last week, 21 students attended a Women in Trades event, our AVID students held an end of the year celebration, our state champion choir held spring concerts, and our senior thespians hosted one act plays to name a few.
In sports, softball competed well in the first round of the state playoffs losing a close game to Crater, and baseball advanced to the second round of state with a win over Lebanon. Baseball plays at home tomorrow (Friday, 5/24) against Summit at 5:00 pm. Track and field showed well at the state championships with Cohen Hall taking home the state championship in the 100 meter. Hall also ran to 3rd in the 200m. Kenzie Bigej finished 5th in the 1500m and 6th in the 800m. Abella Leder and Logan Peterson each finished 4th in the 300m Hurdles. The boys 4x100 Relay finished in 4th place, and the girls 4x100 finished in 6th place. The girls 4x400 relay finished in 5th place. Luke Soles finished in 7th place in pole vault. Lacrosse advanced to the second round of the playoffs as well and will travel to Lakeridge in the second round tomorrow. Many of our athletes were honored with all league recognition. See the athletics and activities section below for more information.
Even though the end of the year is close, it is very important that students keep up with classes and finish strong. We still have weeks of school left to go, even as we honor our seniors with a variety of festivities.
Lastly, we have no school Monday, as we celebrate Memorial Day and honor those fallen heroes that served our Country.
Have a wonderful week!
Best,
Cari Sloan

Graduation All Night Party
Please help us celebrate the Canby High School Class of 2024 by signing up to volunteer at the Senior "GAP" All Night Party on Friday, June 7th. We need as many volunteers as possible to make this an amazing event for our graduates. Senior parents are more than welcome to sign up to help, but we also need parents who do not have seniors. Think of volunteering at this event as paying it forward. Volunteering gives the senior parents a chance to attend graduation, and visit with family and friends who might be visiting for graduation. Then when it's you students turn to graduate, other parents will do the same for you.
When signing up, please make sure that you add an email and a phone number. I will be sending out reminders as we get closer to the event. The location will not be disclosed until a couple of hours before the event, because we want to surprise the student, but know that it is within a half an hour drive.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email Amber Bedortha at canbyamber@yahoo.com.

Baseball
The Canby Cougars added to their win streak with a 4-0 win over Lebanon in the first round of the state play-offs. The Cougars are 25-3 overall this season. League Player of the Year, Brady Ackerman, has a 1.104 OPS, a 0.563 OBP, and a 0.541 slugging percentage. Joe Scott leads the Cougars in pitching with a 1.43 ERA this season. Blake Miller leads the team in fielding chances this season. Miller's primary position is catcher. The Cougar baseball team is currently ranked 1st in the OSAA Rankings. They play Summit at home this Friday in the second round of the state-playoffs.
Softball
CHS softball is finishing off the regular season with a win against Putnam to finish 9-5 in league, 13-12 overall. The Cougars traveled to Crate in the first round of the state play-offs where they lost a hard fought game against the Comets 1-4. The Cougars have no seniors this season, but have some terrific young talent for the next few years to come. Some standouts this year include freshman Taylor Saucedo and Sophomores Summer St. John, Abigail Troutman, and Allison Hayzlett, all with batting averages above .300 for the season. This young team has a very bright future.
Girls Golf
The Girl's Golf season came to an end with three players competing at the State Golf Tournament at Trysting Tree in Corvallis. Gracie Carter ended up 32nd with a score of 209, Grace English ended up 38th with a score of 209 and Jazmin Diaz was 50th with a score of 226. A very successful golf season for the girls.
Boys Golf
Last week, the boys golf team played at the OSAA 5A State tournament at Quail Valley in Banks. Mason DeBruyn was the only Canby player to qualify for State. Mason is the first Canby Freshman since 2016 to qualify as an individual for State. Quail Valley was a difficult test to navigate between hard fast greens, thick rough, and wind. Mason finished a respectable T31 (86 & 86) in 5A and a solid 6th place for all freshmen.
OHSET
At the state OHSET, we had 8 athletes representing Canby High School. The Freestyle 5+ Drill team (Madi Bigej, Hailey Magenheimer, Hayley Smith, Sadie Schweitzer, Madison Wheeler, Addie Heinemann) took home 1st place! What a huge accomplishment. The drill team is heading to PNWIC (regional competition with teams from Washington) in June. In addition, the CHS OHSET team had the following also qualify for PNWIC: Sadie Schweitzer took 2nd place in Dressage, Madison Wheeler took 5th place at In Hand Trail, Lola Rice took 3rd place in Steer Daubing, Madi Bigej, Sadie Schweitzer, Madison Wheeler, Hailey Magenheimer took 4th place at In Hand Obstacle Relay. Congratulations to all the Cougar OHSET athletes.
Boys Tennis
Boys Varsity Tennis competed at Districts on Tuesday May 14th at Parkrose where Seniors Hemsi-Walters and Evan Kinzie both advanced to the quarter finals.
Girls Tennis
The girls tennis team competed in the league tournament on Wednesday, May 15. Singles player Geneva Diggles and doubles team Isabell Arredondo/Rayanne Schedler made it to the championship quarter finals, where they lost in hard fought battles. Doubles teams Malaysia Griffen/Anna Poe and Evlallya Burkoff/Aubri Wohlers made it to the consolation quarter finals, where they lost their last matches. Caitlyn Lay is going to the semi finals of consolation, she is still in the tournament. First year coaches, Josie Warren and Arika Evans are very proud of the work the girls have put in this season.
Track & Field
The Track & Field team competed at the OSAA state championships last week. Cohen Hall was a state champion in the 100m, and 3rd in the 200m.
