Scholars and Learning Coaches,

I hope that you are enjoying 2020 and have exciting goals set for your second semester! There were many great and exciting changes that happened in 2019, including the opening of CCS of Yolo, and the addition of the AVID program to our Options Program (this is our third year of offering AVID to our Online Program). The AVID College Readiness System transforms a school’s academic culture to increase the number of scholars who enroll in four-year colleges and succeed in higher education.

The new year brings about many exciting and important events. January is National School Board Recognition Month and we are celebrating our community volunteers who dedicate countless hours and resources to ensure quality education is available for scholars. I am proud to celebrate National Board Recognition Month and am truly grateful for each of our board members. Our Board shows continued dedication to ensuring consistent growth of our educational programs and services to best support our scholars and their families.

January also includes National School Choice Week (NSCW), from January 27-February 1, Compass Charter Schools, along with many other charter schools, district schools, homeschool groups, organizations and individuals, plan tens of thousands of independent events. These celebratory events raise public awareness of the different K-12 education options available to children and families while also spotlighting the benefits of school choice. Because each scholar has their own unique set of talents, interests, and challenges, a variety of options in education is crucial. School choice ensures that each scholar can find a learning environment that allows them to be inspired, successful, and happy.

Is there something specific you'd like to see in the newsletter? We have Virtual Suggestion Boxes for scholars, as well as parents, where you can share your input on Compass Charter Schools. We review these monthly with our Parent Advisory Council, Scholar Leadership Council, and Staff Advisory Committee. Feel free to share your suggestion(s) today to help us continue to enhance the educational experience for our scholars.

I encourage you to share your thoughts and goals for your year of possibilities with your teachers and peers! Continue to keep up the great work as we finish out our first semester, and set our sights on our second semester.

As Engagement Specialist, I have the pleasure of assisting Rebecca MacAlpine, our Director of Engagement, in providing fun and engaging opportunities for our scholars and their families! I really love that even in a virtual environment, we have such a wonderful and tight-knit community that I am proud to be a part of! In my personal time, I enjoy dancing, going to the beach, and spending time with my dogs!

Field Trips - We've had an exciting school year so far in engagement! Since November, scholars have already visited the Bedford Gallery, Fort Ross, LA Zoo, Garner Holt Productions, Logan's Candies, Lyon Air Museum, Riley's Farm, Jelly Belly Factory, Aquarium of the Pacific, Pennypickle's Workshop, Environmental Nature Center, Petco Park, Sacramento Ballet's The Nutcracker, Traditional Equitation School, A Christmas Carol Performance, Getty Center, Gentle Barn, and Sawdust Factory!

Virtual Scholar Workshop - Our virtual scholar workshops have been enjoyed by our scholars during the past few months. We all enjoyed our workshop on Investigating the First Thanksgiving along with our workshop on Winter Baking with Household Items and our Goal Setting Workshop!

Contests - During the past few months, we invited our scholars to participate in an Acts of Kindness Bingo and a Firebird Freetime contest where scholars were encouraged to share their hobbies! At the end of January, we are looking forward to seeing all our scholar photos for our Spirit Week Photo Contest!

• Elementary Arts & Crafts Club

We welcome all scholars in Grades TK-6 to join our Elementary Arts & Crafts Club! Our scholars are inspired by our members’ creativity & artwork! Last month, we kicked off our winter theme with a fun winter drawing! We are looking forward to more exciting arts & crafts that we will create together as we meet virtually every month. Please join us on the last Thursday of each month at 11:00 a.m.

• Chess Club

Learning and competing in chess matches improves academic performance, critical & strategic thinking skills, concentration and tenacity, self-esteem and willingness to take risks. It's fun to fork and skewer your opponents! The club is open to all scholars from grades K-12. Go to www.chesskid.com for games. The chess club meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 3:00 p.m.

• Dance Club

We love to move and groove in the dance club! Once a month, CCS dancers of all levels (beginner to advanced) meet virtually to celebrate their love for dance, learn and practice new styles, and even explore the dance industry as a future career.

• Science Club

The Science Fair Club is an exciting way to get involved in science. Scholars have been working hard brainstorming an area of study and deciding upon a problem they would like to solve. They will create a hypothesis, then use the scientific process to test it. At the end of the year, scholars will display their findings and demonstrate their testing results for an online science fair. This club encourages scholars to identify the ways science affects their lives and their community. Still accepting club members if you want to join. The Science Club is open to all scholars.
