Lockdown Drill
Next week, our school will conduct a lockdown drill. We cannot share the exact date and time of the drill. The purpose of a lockdown drill is to practice the response to an active threat inside our school. Staff will prepare students for the drill and support individual students as needed. We expect students to follow their teacher’s instructions, silence their cell phones, and remain quiet. Classes that are outside of the school will evacuate off of school grounds and will not go inside the school. The drill will end with a District official or School Resource Officer identifying themselves, unlocking each classroom with a key, and letting students and staff know that everything is clear and the drill has concluded. Learn more about safety drills and the Standard Response Protocol on our website. If you have questions please contact me at Amy Torres at 503-844-1680.
Erin's Law
Dear HBP Families,
As part of our health education program, our district provides age appropriate, comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) for all students, K-12. All instruction is based on Oregon Law and the Oregon Health Education Standards and Performance Indicators adopted by the Oregon State Board of Education in December of 2016.
Three key laws guide our sexuality education efforts:
Human Sexuality Education (2009),
Healthy Teen Relationships (2013), and
Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Education (2015)
In communication with superintendents and principals, the former Director of the Oregon Department of Education, Colt Gill, explained that “These laws provide for consistent instruction, are based on the most current evidence and best practices, and equip students with the knowledge and skills to realize their health, well-being, and educational goals. Sexuality education supports young people with skills to delay sexual initiation, prevent unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), promote their own health, and reduce sexual violence, harassment, and bullying.” In the Hillsboro School District, we are committed to the delivery of this content by skilled, caring, and dedicated staff, in safe, inclusive environments.
HSD’s Comprehensive Sexuality Education Plan includes the right of parents/guardians to be notified of upcoming sexual health lessons (as is the purpose of this letter), to review instructional materials, and to propose alternative learning activities for their student(s) if they choose to.
Below, you will find information related to our delivery of sexuality education this year:
Hillsboro Big Picture
11th grade: 2/21-2/22, 4th and 5th period
11th (2 90-minute lessons)
Lesson 1: Healthy Relationships, Boundaries & Consent
Lesson 2: Power, Control, and Abuse
12th grade: 2/20- 2/21, 2nd and 3rd period
12th (2 90-minute lessons)
Lesson 1: Communicating About Consent
Lesson 2: Recognizing & Respecting Boundaries
As a parent/guardian, we encourage you to learn more about our K-12 Comprehensive Sexuality Plan and teaching materials. To make this as easy as possible, we have posted documents on our Comprehensive Sexuality Education Plan website that outline the standards, curricula, and instructional materials used at each grade-level. (Note: If/when materials cannot be posted online due to copyright restrictions, you may call the school and make an appointment to view them in person.) Remember, parents/guardians have the right to utilize our opt-out process if they wish to have their student(s) participate in alternate activities during sexual health instruction (Opt-Out Form).
If you have any questions/concerns about the health curriculum, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
Sincerely,
Amy Torres
Cell Phones
One way you can partner with us to keep students engaged when we return to school is to support the HSD electronic device policy. Students should have all electronic devices (phones, earbuds) away during class unless instructed by the teacher or specified as an academic support. Please remember that your student should not be answering phone calls or text messages during instruction. This keeps them focused on their learning and connected with their teacher and peers.
Thank you very much for your partnership and support.
Seniors Class of 2024
HSD Fines & Fees
As we begin HSD Semester 2, it is one step closer to the end of the school year and graduation. We recommend reaching out to your home high school to check on any fines or fees posted to your account. This could include: technology and athletic fees, nutrition services, and outstanding books. Outstanding account balances can prevent graduation ticket and future diploma distributions.
FAFSA/ORSAA Updates
The US Department of Education announced that students’ FAFSA information will likely become available to colleges until March, six weeks after the original timeline. Without this information, schools are unable to offer a financial aid package. This further delays the timeframe for students to receive aid offers and make decisions about their college-going, which was already delayed by the later opening of the 2024-25 FAFSA. Many factors are out of your control. Here are a few things you can do:
- Read all email communication from colleges you have applied to. They will share important announcements and deadline changes.
- Turn energy towards completion of scholarship applications (see below)
- Take a deep breath and lean on your support system
- What does the FAFSA comments or errors mean for me/my family?
For students and their families who have completed the FAFSA and when they check your status it says “In Review”
The information you have submitted will be sent to the colleges and universities you indicated on the form in the first half of March. The colleges and universities will take that information to create your financial aid offer.
For students and their families who have submitted the FAFSA that need to make a change to the form (missing signature, need to add schools, etc):
You will need to wait until the your FAFSA is processed in the first half of March to make changes
For students with a contributor without a Social Security Number
Currently contributors without Social Security numbers cannot access the online form, preventing mixed status families from completing it
I am applying for a scholarship that requires FAFSA, what do I do?Schools have also just heard the information about the delays in information. They will adjust, the old deadlines may not change on their websites right away (or ever), but don’t panic - if you have applied to the school and applied for Financial Aid as soon as you could (including those with glitches, errors, that can’t be corrected yet, etc) you will should be fine.
