Art Work by Kilgour Students to be Displayed at the CPS Education Center 🎨🖼️
Art teacher Laura McMullen has partnered with the CPS district office to have the art work of Kilgour students on display at the Education Center. Five Kilgour student artists have been selected and will have their work showcased at the Education Center for second quarter! These artists will have their work beautifully framed, and it will be on view at the office until the next round of selections, likely after Winter break.
The selected artists are:
🎨 Rye Wohleb (Kindergarten)
🎨 Winifred Raidt (Kindergarten)
🎨 Teddy Kibler (1st)
🎨 Rosslyn Dahm (2nd)
🎨 Lillian Swan (2nd)
The display date is still TBD. Feel free to check in with Ms. McMullen (mcmulll@cpsboe.k12.oh.us) for information about when you can visit the Education Center to support our students and their work.
Our 5th Graders are Ready for the Sharks 🦈
The 5th Graders have been Inventing and Innovating in Ms. McKay's class this year. It's now time for them to take their ideas to the Shark Tank. I gotta say, their ideas sound very creative and cool. So far they have come up with the following:
- Pencil with a squishy so if kids tap it, it doesn't annoy other classmates
- TV remote control with attached fidgets so the person who is holding the remote plays with the fidgets rather than constantly changing the channel and running the batteries down
- A hose with an attached Scrub Daddy for easier outdoor cleaning
- Water bottle with pockets because hydration is key
- "Who said you can't play with your food" (Pop-its and other edible fidgets)
- Robot to help disabled/elderly individuals
- Brush with a space for shampoo and conditioner
- The safe pencil sharpener (a machine where students can drop their pencils in have them sharpened and press on a bar to get a new "sharpened one" safely)
- Book buddy - a form of luggage to carry books so you aren't dropping them
- Dittle - 2 flavors in one skittle
- Glow in the dark word cookies
Can you guess which one your 5th grader came up with? I can't wait to see these presentations.
Here's a little more backgound about the Shark Tank Competition.
Students had their creativity, collaboration, and business skills PUT TO THE TEST as they were instructed to invent/innovate unique and useful products.
How does it work? They were challenged to come up with original ideas, collaborate with a business partner/s and then pitch their idea to the SHARKS. Just like the TV competition, the sharks will decide if they want to invest in their products.
In a bit of role reversal, they will also take on the role of shark and decide which of their classmates' products they would invest in. The business team that receives the most investments will be named TOP ENTREPRENEUR.
While working through the process students must be creative, motivated and reflective as they move through the competition. Like all good entrepreneurs, they will need to perservere through challenges and failures to make it in the SHARK TANK.
Be sure to read future HDH for updates on the competition and details on which partners become the TOP ENTREPRENEUR.

Broadband Access - Is Your Family Connected?
Mr. Matthew Long from United Way of Greater Cincinnati’s 211 Care Coordination team wants to pass along information about the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), which helps families pay for internet service and connected devices, such as a laptop or tablet.
Broadband access is an essential resource for us all, including students. The U.S. Department of Education points out that broadband widens learning opportunities for students, providing access to high-quality, low-cost, relevant educational material. Broadband allows teachers, parents and organizations to make better decisions tied to each student’s needs and abilities.
Low-income families have not always had the resources to bring the internet into their homes. Now, though, households may qualify for the ACP by meeting one of the following:
- Household income is 200% below the poverty threshold.
- A child participates in certain government assistance programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, WIC or other programs.
- A household already receives a Lifeline benefit.
Families can check whether they qualify and apply online here: getinternet.gov.
Families can also download, print and complete a paper application.
Families can get assistance completing the application by contacting United Way at 211 or 513-721-7900 or emailing hccc@uwgc.org. Families also can schedule an appointment for in-person application assistance at myuwgc.org/acphelp.
Thank you for helping ensure more families know about this benefit.
Sincerely,
Matthew Long | Sr. Program Manager (Pronouns: he, him, his)

Holiday Fair Schedule & Volunteer Sign Up
Happy November Kilgour families,
My name is Andrea Johnson; I currently have a 6th grade daughter at Kilgour (my son is now in the 7th grade at Walnut Hills High School). I've been running the annual Holiday Fair for Kilgour since my son was in Kindergarten or 1st grade (I've lost track) and am really excited to announce that our 2023 Holiday Fair will be held on THURSDAY DECEMBER 7 and FRIDAY DECEMBER 8 this year. For those who are new to Kilgour or new to the Holiday Fair, the event is a two-day shopping extravaganza, held in our Kilgour Gym. Our children will visit the shop for a scheduled 20-30 minute time period on one of the two days above; if they've brought money with them to school that day, they are invited to shop for their family members, friends, and pets.
We need LOTS of volunteers for these days: please consider signing up for a shift if you can.

I've included an information form to this message, along with the schedule of classes for the Fair. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns: andrea.johnson101342@gmail.com or 513-518-2868 (text is preferred but feel free to call if you'd like).
Sincerely,

Kilgour Staff Treats
We are hoping to provide teacher treats again for the teachers at least once a month! There are 3 sign ups for each day. PLEASE indicate what you are bringing so the other people can plan accordingly. It can be bagels, muffins, or something for breakfast. It can also be something for later in the day... trail mix, chips, other treats. Each person can plan to provide something for 20-25 people so you aren't bringing in something for the whole staff. Sign up with friends and make it a group thing!
We would like to have items in the front hall by the office around 8:30 on the day you are scheduled. Thank you in advance for showing our teachers and staff some appreciation.
E-mail Kerrin Smith at smith.kerrin@gmail.com with any questions. Our Resource Coordinator can also help with logistics if needed.
