November is often seen as a month of gratitude as we look towards Thanksgiving. For many Thanksgiving represents a time to celebrate with families and remind one another what we are grateful for. With that said, it is important to mention that the history of Thanksgiving is often seen as a painful one to the Native American Community. (https://americanindian.si.edu/nk360/informational/rethinking-thanksgiving). Conversations around all holidays and what they mean to some and why others may feel differently are all important to have with your child(ren). They become more respectful, understanding citizens of the world.
Which is why it is important to teach gratitude. Gratitude is about showing appreciation. It helps people feel more positive, builds strong relationships and builds empathy. Have your child(ren) notice the reaction they get when they thank someone or do something that is helpful to someone. We often call this “Filling a bucket” or “filling one’s heart”. When you compliment, thank or help someone, they feel good which makes you feel good. They then pass that good feeling along to others. And in today's world who couldn’t use a little extra thanks and positivity?
Here are a couple of things you can do with your child around gratitude: Remind them to say “thank you” wherever you go from the checkout line at the grocery store to the cashier at the clothing store, have them donate clothes they grow out of or toys they no longer use. I used to tell my children that their stuffed animals had a lot of love at home and it’s now time for another child to have that love.
The Big Life Journal has a free 21 day of gratitude challenge. You can check it out at:
For young children here is a Sesame Street video about Gratitude: Gratitude
And for older children check out the Rocket Kids Video on Gratitude
Practicing Gratitude (and 10 things I'm grateful for)
And this oldie but really fun video from Kid President: Kid President’s 25 Reasons To Be Thankful!
As always, please review the videos first and be prepared to discuss them with your child(ren).
There are a ton of great books on gratitude available at our local libraries. Here are just a few.

-Sylvester and the Magic Pebble by William Steig
-The Thank You Book by Mo Willems
