Principal Engdall
Greeting Shaw Montessori,
What an amazing science fair we were treated to. So many creative projects were presented by our students. And those tacos….yummy! Thank you for coming and supporting our young scientists!
The track meet on Tuesday at North Highschool produced 3, 1st place trophy’s, the 5th grade girls, the 6th grade girls and boys! The individual event ribbons will be arriving soon. I do not think there was a single event that we did not place in. Such an exciting day for our track stars, they showed up and worked hard. Another shout out to Coach Wilfert who instills love, fun and a competitive spirit in our student athletes preparing them for afterschool competitive sports, track and field and general fitness education. We are indeed a lucky community for having his persistence and passion daily.
Speaking of passion and unseen work, Mr. Moench and a small army of parents gathered last weekend to add new mulch to our classroom pods enhancing their beauty, utility, and cleanliness. Thank you to the parents that showed up for our entire community. So many ways to give at Shaw and we appreciate what each one of you brings to benefit our students.
Wednesday evening, March 5th from 5:30-6:30 at the Hererra Performing Arts Center our student musicians, lead by Mr. Pozo will perform in the district Instrumental Music Honor Festival. Congratulations to the student selected to attend. This is an amazing opportunity for them.
On Tuesday, March 4th our governing board will vote on the proposed Phoenix Elementary School closures. The meeting will be held in the Governing Board Room located at 1817 N. 7th Street and begins at 5:15. The board will convene to Executive Session prior to their vote.
This week Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are all early release day to accommodate parent/teacher conferences. Teachers are trying to reach you to schedule your child’s conference. If you haven’t done so, please schedule yours today.
All the sand has been removed and they are beginning to augur the holes for concrete and posts. Our playground should be receiving her new play structures soon!
Wishing you the best,
Principal Engdall

It’s Open Enrollment time!
Each year our district needs the Open Enrollment forms collected from all the students that attend our schools, and many of you may remember filling them out every year around this time. We appreciate your prompt participation in this necessary form as you continue your child’s education at one of the few, FREE, public Montessori schools in the city.
Please fill out the attached Open Enrollment form and return to the Front Office of return via email to shaw@phxschools.org
If you wish to continue your child’s education at Shaw Montessori, you will NEED to return the Open Enrollment form.
Please reach out with any questions.

Greetings!
This was our last week with dill & pickling. It was a fun one. We will have dill for the next month so if you would like to pickle at home, please have your child visit me in the garden for some sprigs and a recipe. When we return from break, we will begin a lesson on cilantro. In the interim, we are having a garden scavenger hunt to see what the students have retained over the years.
Thanks to all the parents that showed up last weekend at parent workday. They mulched all the pods, cleaned around the fruit trees and weeded the tortoise habitat. I forgot to include pictures again! Please see the attached photo of the parents posing with one of their mulched pods.
In other news, Torty Banks has arisen! She came out of her burrow earlier this week when temperatures nearly hit 90 degrees. We have been feeding her lettuce and nasturtium from the garden. Some students gave her a bath and some love. I helped Coach Wilfert with the annual track event on Tuesday where the students cooked. We brought home 3 chips and lots of memories. Nice job 5th and 6th graders!
We are always seeking coffee grounds, seeds, and aluminum cans. If you have anything that might benefit our garden program, please contact me via email. The front table outside of the office is our designated drop-off location for garden essentials. james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Enjoy your weekend!
