Issue #48 | January 14, 2022
Our schools are closed on Monday for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. The day is so much more than just a holiday. The Reverend Dr. King, Jr. devoted his life to helping others and to creating economic and social justice and a world of peace, freedom and equality. I find his messages to be in desperate need of repetition and execution in today’s world. Dr. King once said, “The time is always right to do what is right.” I strive to live up to these words and to do the right thing every day. The problems are that sometimes the right thing isn’t abundantly clear and that it isn’t always right for everyone.
The NSCSD is working hard to preserve safe in-person education and extra-curricular opportunities with our collective health and well-being as the highest priorities. During these ever-changing times, decisions are sometimes made quickly and then must be reassessed and changed.
Our world is constantly changing as COVID continues its unwelcome and persistent invasion. Again this week, the Onondaga County Health Department released new guidance for isolation and quarantine to help our communities continue to operate safely amidst an uptick in COVID. We know that it isn’t always easy to interpret lengthy documents so we also wanted to provide a link to their easy to read flowchart.
We understand the fear and uncertainty that come with change and are committed to safe operations now and always. We are working with our local and state health departments to obtain more safety and testing equipment for students and staff. We continue to partner with local pharmacies to offer vaccination and booster opportunities as well.
Enjoy the Monday holiday with your families and friends and stay safe and healthy.
Sincerely,
Daniel D. Bowles, Superintendent of Schools

Nationwide Service Disruptions Impacting School Meals
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, we are seeing nationwide disruptions to manufacturing, supply and distribution channels. You may have experienced this yourself when you’ve tried to order something online or buy something in the store and what you’re looking for isn’t available right now.
What does the shortage mean for school meals? In short, it means that we’re having trouble getting certain foods and supplies. Your student(s) may notice that we’re serving different items than we’ve served in the past or different items than were listed on the menu.
School districts across the country are experiencing these shortages and unfortunately, we cannot control the problem. We are doing our best every day to come up with solutions to these challenges.
