Principal's Message
HTMS Community,
Last week in our staff meeting, we had a Gallery Walk that focused on making intentional instructional moves to meet our students' needs! Hearing us talk about data, how we made adjustments in the classroom, and continued to reflect on the impact of that instruction is what will see us reach new levels of learning for our kids. The amount of growth across all classrooms in their data was amazing to see!! High expectations, for both ourselves and students, combined with best instructional practices that are culturally affirming is the culture we're aiming for and we're well on our way.
Also, this past Saturday our Student Council, Ms. Twining and Ms. Peoples organized an amazing community care day that saw about 40 people show up to pick up trash at our school and around our community!! Please see the photos below.
We have a number of events coming up for all of our students, but we want to highlight all of the celebrations we have coming up specifically for our 8th graders. You will see a permission slip with four different events.
I believe in our kids. I believe in our staff. And I believe in the power of community. Now let's go finish the year like Legends!
Thank you. Take care

Community Office of Community-based Police Accountability (OCPA) Opportunities
I’m Kristen Thorp, and I'm with City of Portland’s newly established of Office of Community-based Police Accountability (OCPA). In 2020 the voters decided to change the way our City manages police oversight. With community input, the City developed a new system. My office was recently created to be a part of that new system, and I am supporting the recruitment for the first Community Board for Police Accountability (CBPA).
This volunteer opportunity will give Portlanders a direct impact on police practices, policies, and oversight. I’ve attached a flyer and link to our media release.
Applications for the CBPA will be accepted through 5 p.m., Monday, April 14.
University of Portland: Summer Learning Program:
We have begun accepting applications for our annual Summer Learning Program! In this program, the learning focuses on the Oregon State Benchmarks appropriate for each child in mathematics, language arts (reading, writing, and speaking), and any other subjects in which the student needs help. Our Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) candidates tutor/teach students according to their learning needs. There are usually 4-5 students per 2-3 MAT candidates.
This year’s program will run June 30 – July 31, Monday-Thursday, 9:30am-11:30am, and we welcome students entering grades 2-11 in 2025-26. The cost of the program is $125, though scholarships are available.
Online registration is now available HERE.

At Harriet Tubman Middle School, we would love for you to visit your student and to support our building! Please remember to return to the main office to sign out.
If you would like to visit a classroom, you will need to provide educators with a 24 hour notice. This can be done via email or over the phone with the educator.
All volunteers must have a background check. Ask our front office how to get that going!
Yondr (Cell Phone) Expectations
We launched our new Cell Phone policy on Monday, February 3rd! We had our Student Support team, community partners, Self Enhancement Inc. and Maurice Lucas Foundation, and our Student Council push into classes on Thursday to talk about the new policy while creating opportunities for questions and conversations. Our Student Council kids did an amazing job!
Please refer to these resources for our policy, general information and slides we used to communicate with our kids:
Code of Conduct Agreement
Harriet Tubman Middle School has several policies and expectations for our students and our Code of Conduct Agreement (CCA) outlines each of them. You will see expectations for students in regards to our general building expectations (A.S.K.), our attendance system (ASERT), behavior referrals and discipline ladder, cell phone policy, social media and attire expectations as well as our food policy.
Our goal is to create a safe and inclusive environment for all students. It is your responsibility to review our building expectations and to ensure both you and your student/s understand HTMS and PPS expectations and policies.
If you have any questions and or concerns, please reach out to our team for support.
