LISD School Newsletter
A Note from Dr. Martin
Dear LISD Families,
This feels like a great week to talk about music! Yesterday evening, we had a band and orchestra concert at the Lopez Community Center for the Arts. Kudos to our music teacher, Naomi Vliet, for all her hard work preparing our students in their music classes, and to our band and orchestra students for a strong performance.
MPPACT, an extra-curricular band for secondary students, has performed twice in the last few weeks...at the post Tour de Lopez festivities for the community and visitors AND at prom last Saturday night for their high school peers. They have an upcoming performance at Vita's on Friday, May 31, which is a fundraiser for the program and also a celebration of our graduating senior musicians. We hope to see you there! The annual Vita's concert always brings a crowd and an awesome summer vibe. Thank you to Jesse Hammond for working with MPPACT students throughout the school year (rehearsals nearly every night!) and planning gigs for them in every season.
Next year, we will continue to offer a full range of music classes for every level during the school day...and some of that is due to a very generous donation from a community member who values music education. For the 2024-25 school year, music education will include elementary music enrichment, early morning orchestra for 5th-8th graders, middle school band, high school orchestra, and high school mariachi band (a brand new class)...all taught by Naomi Vliet. Our students are so lucky to have these opportunities!
Thank you for supporting music education at LISD by attending performances and being an enthusiastic audience, taking the time to thank Naomi and Jesse, and encouraging your children to participate in music education opportunities at school.

Prom was Such a Fun Night!
LISD HS Prom 2024 was a huge success! The juniors (Class of 2025) raised money throughout the school year at events like the Children's Center Holiday Bazaar and the school's Winter Arts Night to put on this epic event. The theme was "One Night in Hollywood" and students were decked out in red, white, black, and gold. Golden era films were projected onto the walls and there was even a live performance by the student music group MPPACT.
The students would like to thank LVM for donating all of the scrumptious food and beverage to the dance. THANK YOU LOPEZ VILLAGE MARKET!
Also, a big shout out to Woodmen Hall for providing the space for us to rent at a school discount, all the chaperones, and Mr. B for taking photos. Also, a thank you to all the students who came to have a good time and danced the night away.
8th Grade Health Lesson this Week
This week, our 8th grade health class enjoyed whole-class exercises to learn about healthy communication and emotional regulation skills. This is one small part of our year-long focus on learning skills that will prevent bullying.
Dental Care at the School
This Wednesday, Community Health Care of Snohomish County brought their dental care team to Lopez Island! Nineteen elementary students participated in their School Based Sealant Program. We are so fortunate that they offer these needed hygiene services and provide sealants (a thin coating on the back molars that prevents 80% of cavities) for our children wanting to be seen.
Vaccine Appointments at the Family Resource Center
If any students need vaccines, the public health nurse comes once a month to the Family Resource Center. The next date is Tuesday, June 4th. If your child needs vaccines, please call and make an appointment - 360-468-4117. An appointment made at least 24 hours in advance is necessary.
Mother's Day Pop-Up at the Community Center
Fundraiser to support the Lopez Children's Center - coffee, bagels, donuts, & flowers!
Help the PACK Resurface the Gym
The school gym is in dire need of resurfacing. The Pack is fundraising to cover the costs so our student athletes continue to have a great experience playing Lobo sports. Please help if you can.
Financial Aid Night - June 4
Futures NW will be partnering with us on a Financial Aid Night on June 4 and providing a presentation over Zoom. Time is 6:30 - 8:00 pm. There will be an English presentation in Isaac Berg's room (number 9) and a Spanish presentation in Al Torres' room (number 1) with interpreters available to help with questions. This presentation will be most relevant for students and families in 11th grade, but anyone is invited to come if they are interested in hearing about how the process for financial aid college and post-high school training programs works.
