May is an exciting month with many activities happening at school and in our community. In school students at all grade levels will be taking assessments to help us know how much they have learned this year but also to understand more about how the pandemic may have impacted their academic progress. Hathaway Teachers will also be hosting Spring Parent Conferences for educational partners before students move onto the next grade level. Please read below for more information.

Outside of school, Oxnard College is hosting a Family Festival on Sunday, May 1, There are also important holidays like Mother's Day, celebrated in the US on Sunday, May 8th and celebrated on Tuesday, May 10th in many other places around the world. Another important National holiday which is spent remembering those that have given their lives for our country, Memorial Day, will be recognized on Monday, May 30th. There will be no school that day in honor of the fallen heroes. Please read below for more information about all these events and more!

Parent Conference Schedule:

Minimum days all week!

Kindergarten - 8:05 - 11:26

Grades 1, 2, 3 - 8:05 - 1:20

Grades 4 and 5 - 8:05 - 1:40

Each spring, students in grades three through eight participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP).

This year, your child will take the following test(s) between May 16th - June 10th:

• Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment in English language arts/literacy

• Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment in mathematics

• Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment in science (grades 5&8 only)

The Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments are online tests that measure what students know and is able to do. The tests include many different types of questions that allow students to interact with the test questions. Results help identify gaps in knowledge or skills early on so your child can get the support he or she needs to be successful in school.

Parents of 5th grade students,

Your student does not have to register for 6th grade. If your child is in 5th grade their registration information will automatically be transferred to Blackstock Jr. High School.

You will receive a packet in the mail in August containing important information about orientation, daily schedules and other events.

If you do not plan on having your student attend Blackstock Jr. High School please let us know.

Hathaway Community, Summer school enrollment forms are available in the office for Summer the school program at Williams School for grade K-5 students and at Blackstock for incoming grade 6 students. Parents may pick up Interest Forms from the school office. Deadline to apply is May 9. Thank you!

Hathaway's FREE after school program, After School Education and Safety, ASES, has space for your student! Applications for the FREE After School Program are available in the school office.

Program Hours: Dismissal from regular day until 6:00 p.m. every day school is in session

• Character Counts Pillars (Respect, Caring, Trustworthiness, Citizenship, Responsibility and Fairness)

• To complete homework accurately and neatly with assistance as needed

• How to participate in recreational and enrichment activities

• They are surrounded by adults who are building positive relationships with them

• To increase their English language fluency and mathematical literacy

• They will have many opportunities to experience success on a daily basis

In 1978, a joint congressional resolution established Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week. The first 10 days of May were chosen to coincide with two important milestones in Asian/Pacific American history: the arrival in the United States of the first Japanese immigrants (May 7, 1843) and the contributions of Chinese workers to the building of the transcontinental railroad, completed May 10, 1869.

In 1992, Congress expanded the observance to a month-long celebration that is now known as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

• Support our local Asian American or Pacific Islander community
• Explore our Asian American or Pacific Islander history
• Read a Book with Connections to Asian American or Pacific Islander culture
• Watch a Movie Produced by an Asian American or Pacific Islander creator
• Make some Asian American or Pacific Islander food
• Visit or get takeout food from your favorite Asian American or Pacific Island restaurant
• Try Origami
• Make Bubble Tea at Home

Memorial Day is a day dedicated to the service of men and women who have given their lives for our freedom and our country. It is also a time to remember loved ones who have passed away. The roots of Memorial Day observance goes back to 1865 and the end of the Civil Wear. Memorial Day is traditionally commemorated by attending a parade or visiting a cemetery to remember and honor our fallen service members.

There will be no school Monday, May 31, 2021 in honor of Memorial Day.

Its that time of year again! Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten 2022-23 enrollment is now open!

Students who turn 5 between September 2nd and February 2nd may enroll in Transitional Kindergarten.

Students who turn 5 by September 1st may enroll in Kindergarten.

TK is offered at Bard, Haycox, Hueneme, Larsen, and Williams Schools.

Enroll for both TK and Kindergarten at Hathaway. If TK is not offered at Hathaway office staff will assist in enrolling your child in one of the TK classes at another school site. Based on enrollment, TK classes may be added to additional school sites like Hathaway. To see a TK and kindergarten classroom in action, please watch this short video:

The Ray D. Prueter Library in Port Hueneme is open and ready to support our students!

The library is open Monday through Thursday 10am - 6pm, Friday and Saturday 12 noon - 5pm, and closed Sunday.

The Rosenbluth Family Homework Center at the library is open Monday through Thursday, 3:00 pm – 5:30 pm.

The Homework Center provides free homework assistance in addition to internet access and free color printing for school projects.

The Ray D. Prueter Library is located at 510 Park Avenue in Port Hueneme.

Ray D Prueter Library is launching its “Read Beyond the Beaten Path!” summer reading challenge on May 15, 2022. Over the summer, the library will host a range of free activities for children, teens, and adults to encourage and support a love of reading.

Themed events include bi-weekly STEAM Kits and challenges, participation in the library’s online reading and activity log (register at vencolibrary.beanstack.org), themed Storytimes, and a closing party hosted by Kona Ice. This year Ventura County Library is giving away 13 Nintendo Switch Grand Prizes as well as smaller STEAM prizes, including musical instruments, throughout the summer. In addition, once a child has logged 500 minutes, they may visit their local branch to choose a free new book to add to their home libraries.

There’s so much to see, so much to do at the library! It is one of the best places to take kids, especially during the summer months when children are out of school. The library is a place to learn, read, and have fun…a place the entire family can enjoy. The amount of time children spend reading outside of school is linked to improvements in reading achievement. Many studies show that access to books and other reading materials is directly related to higher reading achievement.

Registration continues through August 14, 2022. To learn more about the summer reading adventure at the library, please check out the library’s website at vencolibrary.org. We hope you will share the attached letters and flyer with your school communities.
