Media Center Project
Grade 5 students had the opportunity to explore figurative language and poetry more deeply through a series of activities in our library. Students have been studying poetry in ELA class, and these stations allow students to apply their knowledge in different ways. At the five stations, students listen to poems and create illustrations of the images found in the words of the poems, write their own poems about their own unique characteristics, sort through examples of figurative language, collaborate with their group members to analyze poems, and write their own similes. Throughout the activities, students are also asked to share their reasoning and explain their thoughts with their groups. Students enjoy working together and sharing their enjoyment of poetry!
Nanuet UFSD Outdoor Education Center (OEC)
Students collect data and work collaboratively to solve real world problems at Nanuet's Outdoor Education Center (OEC). Nanuet's overall mission relating to the OEC includes:

- To develop students to become lifelong advocates for sustainability, conservation and healthy lifestyles.
- To foster team participation in outdoor activities responsibly and safely.
- To help students strive to model practices that minimize consumption and maximize use of energy and materials.
- To create an environment in which students discover their potential to excel as individuals in becoming committed educated citizens and contribute to their communities.
- Help students strive for a world outlook, global awareness and thoughtfully participate in the world we share.

Trout Release at Kakiat Park
In partnership with the NYS Parks Department and the Rockland County Department of Environmental Conservation, 5th grade students attended a trip to Kakiat Park in Pomona for the annual trout release. During the 23-24 school year, students raised and hatched the brown river trout where they learned about their life cycle, habitat, and the importance of sustainability as it relates to our local and global ecosystem. Over 150 students were broken up into groups as they participated in nature walks with a park ranger, had a chance to pick up macroinvertebrates with the Rockland County Department of Environmental Conservation, created nature poetry and art, and collaborated with group partners and teams.

The Sherpas are one of the Tibetan ethnic groups native to the most mountainous regions of Nepal and the Tibetan Autonomous Region. Many Sherpas are highly regarded as elite mountaineers and experts in their local area. Sherpas assist as guides at the extreme altitudes of the peaks and passes in the region, particularly for expeditions to climb Mount Everest.
