Como Park Elementary
January 2025
A Note from Principal Ewald
Como Elementary Families:
Thank you to all families who joined us for our Family Fun Night/Open House in January. We had almost 300 people in our school that night. Everyone had such a great time with all of the activities throughout the building from making glitter sensory bottles to playing in the gym to creating works of art. If you have any feedback from that night, please let us know.
As I reflect on the first half of our school year, I would like to express my gratitude for sending your child/children to Como. We are fortunate to have such amazing students, families and staff. The diversity of our Como Community is one to honor and celebrate daily.
As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns.

A Note from Ms. Patel
Happy New Year, Como Families!
School-wide this month in January, we enjoyed re-learning our SOAR expectations. Thank you to our students for their hard work re-learning our SOAR expectations this month. We celebrated with a school-wide popcorn celebration last Friday, January 24th and every child got a yummy bag of popcorn as treat!
We all also had a fantastic family night event this past month. I want to say THANK YOU to all students and families who came and enjoyed the event alongside our staff and community members.
Meera Patel, Assistant Principal
Arrival/Dismissal
Every morning our teachers set up the routine and schedule for the day with their students. This time allows them to greet each other and prepare for the day in a way that is developmentally appropriate for each student and allows the students to know what to expect and also feel comfortable and prepared.
New Morning Drop-Off Procedure: If your child arrives after 7:45 AM, we ask that you please drop them off at the office rather than walking them to the classroom. Teachers are actively engaged in instruction, and we want to minimize classroom disruptions. Your child can either walk to class on their own or one of our staff members can help them. If you need to speak with the teacher, please schedule an appointment.
Arrival: Our school day begins at 7:30. The front door is open and staffed from 7:15-7:30. Classroom instruction starts at 7:45. We want all students here so that learning is maximized.
Early Pick-Up Reminder: If you need to pick up your child, please make sure to contact the office by 1:00 PM. For safety reasons, parents are not able to remove their child directly from the pick-up line.
Visitors: All visitors will be asked when they buzz in at the front door to identify themselves and the reason for their visit.
We truly appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe and organized environment for all students. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please feel free to reach out.
ACCESS Testing
Como Park Elementary ELL students will be taking the ACCESS test during February and March. ACCESS for ELLs is an English language proficiency test that measures students’ academic English language skills. For more information, you can visit: https://www.spps.org/about/departments/research-evaluation-assessment/test-coordination/access-family-information or if you have further questions, call Como Park Elementary at 651-293-8820.
Counseling Connections with Ms. Keela
February is College & Career Awareness Month! Counseling lessons across all grades this month will explore exciting opportunities in students’ futures: school and postsecondary pathways, graduation, the connection between personal skills & interests with jobs, and exploring careers they might love someday!
How to talk about it at home:
Share what job or career you wanted to have when you were their age!
Point out different jobs and workers in the community. Brainstorm what kind of training, skills, or education they might have to do their work.

Children’s Dental Services has provided dental care twice at Como Park Elementary in January! Thank you for your partnership and support of this program. Children’s Dental Services will continue to schedule service days at Como Park Elementary throughout the school year.
The Phillips EYE Institute provided vision screening to students in kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, and 5th grades in October of 2024. They are still conducting their follow-up procedures for students who did not pass the screening. Phillips EYE Institute supports families by scheduling eye exams, paying for glasses and setting up transportation.
If you have any questions about these services, please call the health office at (651)888-7613. Thank you!

First Grade
In January, Ms. Melissa’s class explored the magic of adjectives. We created snowperson collages, each one unique and full of character. Afterward, we used descriptive adjectives to bring our creations to life, writing about them in vivid detail. It was a wonderful way to blend art with language and have fun while learning!
Second Grade
After a two-week winter break, our second graders were busy reviewing and practicing our school rituals and routines. Eleven school-wide expectations were reviewed as well as our classroom. In the end, we got to enjoy some popcorn to celebrate our learning.
Third Grade
Third graders were very fortunate to have an author visit from local author, Kao Kalia Yang. She read her books A Rock in My Throat and Caged to our students. She also spent time answering many thoughtful questions from students. Did you know that Kao Kalia Yang went to Como Elementary School?
Fourth Grade
Our fourth graders had an electrifying experience at the Energy and U Show at the U of M! They explored the five forms of energy—mechanical, thermal, chemical, electrical, and light—through exciting demonstrations and hands-on activities. From watching sparks fly with static electricity to seeing kinetic energy in action, students discovered how energy powers our world in fascinating ways. It was a fun and engaging way to bring their science learning to life!
Fifth Grade
The month of January has gone by quickly! We have been working on Order of Operations, and rounding to the nearest thousandths place in math. We had a Field Trip to Murray Jr. High to get an idea how middle school will feel like. We are going on a Field Trip to Orchestra Hall and will get to experience what it is like to attend a classical music concert. We are also preparing for our big Field Trip in March. We will be attending J.A. Biztown, which is going to be a simulation for the students. The students are learning about finances, deposit slips, and check registers.
Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE)
The Area of Study for this month is Adapting To Change In Our World. We read books about how people and animals adapt to the cold weather including “The Snowy Day” and “Froggy Gets” dressed. CORE words focused on this month include “in,” ”out,” “on,” ”off” and “put.”
Physical Education
Como Physical Education and St. Paul Parks & Recreation continue to collaborate in athletics instruction and after school sports/activities. Please follow the link for more information! St. Paul Youth Sports
Science
Happy New Year Como Park scientists!
We have already covered a lot of ground in science class. Our Pre-K and Kindergarten students explored how animal babies get their food from their parents. In first, second and third grade, we explore respective levels of understanding the food chain and how organisms depend on the sun and each other to gather and transfer energy. In fourth and fifth grade, students learned how food chains are vital components of food webs and ecosystems. Perhaps your students showed you a take-home model of their work. Please continue to ask them questions and to foster scientific curiosity.
