TSD Weekly Newsletter

June 6, 2025
Good Afternoon OneTroy,
As we wrap up another remarkable school year, I want to begin by extending heartfelt congratulations to the families of our graduates. Whether your child is stepping into Kindergarten, moving on to middle or high school, or receiving their high school diploma, this moment is a celebration of your support, sacrifices, and partnership.
On behalf of the Troy School District, thank you for walking alongside us. We are grateful for the trust you place in our schools and the unwavering encouragement you provide our students every day. I want to wish our students, staff, and families a wonderful and restful summer. May this time be filled with joy, laughter, and precious moments with loved ones.
Before we officially close the chapter on this school year, we want to take a moment to reflect on just a few of the exceptional accomplishments across our district:
- We celebrated the graduation of 341 preschool students, who will be entering Kindergarten this fall, ready to learn and grow.
- 87% of our elementary students are reading at or above grade level, according to our district reading assessment.
- Hamilton Elementary School was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School, one of the highest honors in education.
- Leonard Elementary School was just named a Promising Practices School by Character.org.
- This year, four of our schools were recognized as State Schools of Character: Hamilton Elementary School, Smith Middle School, Troy High School, and Wass Elementary School.
- Our students continue to lead the state in Advanced Placement (AP) participation and success, taking on rigorous coursework and demonstrating excellence in every area.
- We graduated more than 1,000 high school students this year, ready to embark on the next chapter of their lives.
- Our high school students have earned more than $14.5 million in scholarships, a testament to their hard work and the unwavering support of our staff and families.
These achievements are just a snapshot of what makes the Troy School District so special. Behind every statistic is a story of determination, resilience, and a community that truly believes in the power of education.
Thank you for your continued support, partnership, and commitment to our OneTroy family.
Have a safe, relaxing summer, and we look forward to welcoming you back in the fall, ready to build on this incredible momentum.
Warm regards,
Richard Machesky, Superintendent

Attendance Area Review Update
The Troy School District is committed to keeping our community informed about the Attendance Area Review process. Due to time constraints at recent board workshops, the decision has been made to postpone further discussion of the Attendance Area Review and potential school boundary changes until the fall.
Any proposed changes will not take place until Fall 2026. This extended timeline allows for thoughtful consideration and meaningful community input regarding any proposed changes. We appreciate the community’s continued engagement on this topic and remain committed to sharing updates as new information becomes available both in our Friday newsletter, as well as on our website.

Are You a Leader? SSAB Wants You!
Dr. Machesky is looking for motivated incoming 9th and 10th grade students to join our Superintendent Student Advisory Board (SSAB) next year. SSAB students serve as a sounding board for Dr. Machesky on various issues to help better understand student perspectives on important topics facing our students. It's a great opportunity for students to build leadership skills, meet students from all four high schools, and have the chance to have their voices heard at the district level. This is a very hands-on group where attendance and active participation are expected. SSAB students meet monthly, and they are involved in planning the Citywide MLK Jr. Event and Leadership Conference for 8th graders. Apply here. The deadline to apply is August 2 and decisions will be made in late August/early September.
Project Search Celebration!
Students from the Troy Center for Transition celebrated completing their internships through Project SEARCH this week! Project SEARCH is a business-focused, one-year internship program for young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Most participants are enrolled while transitioning from high school to work. The hallmark of Project SEARCH is total workplace immersion, which facilitates a seamless combination of classroom instruction, career exploration, and hands-on training leading to acquisition of marketable work skills. Project SEARCH's goal is to secure competitive, integrated employment for every program participant. Congratulations to these students!
Open Air Fest Mosaic Art
At last week's Open Air Fest, students and families worked side by side to create a collaborative work of art that celebrates unity, belonging, and creativity. The final design was inspired by Athens student Ana Rodriguez-Andrade, who looked to the district’s four pillars as a foundation for her concept. Her vision centered on themes of coming together and creating a sense of belonging—ideas that guided the design and made the project especially meaningful.
The finished mosaic consists of three grouted panels, each measuring 35.5" x 14.75", and together forming a vibrant 35.5" x 45" piece. It stands as a powerful example of what can happen when art and community intersect.
Athen Art Teacher Melissa Velk is currently exploring options for a permanent display location and look forward to sharing this beautiful piece with the broader school community. Thank you to Ms. Velk and Ana for bringing this wonderful piece to life!

Students combine research, storytelling, and digital literacy to create an arcade-style video game, complete with its own custom box. All games are open for play at the annual Baker Arcade Day, a memorable event for all that celebrates student creativity.
Elementary iPad Update
Next year, TSD second graders will have 1:1 iPads, providing each student with their own device for learning. Just like in first grade, the iPads will remain in the classroom to support instruction and daily activities. We continuously monitor and evaluate technology best practices to support the developmental needs of all learners. Keeping iPads in classrooms rather than transporting them to and from school each day ensures that these young elementary students have consistent access to technology while avoiding common concerns such as heavy backpacks, device damage, and accidental swaps. This transition reflects our commitment to creating an optimal learning environment for second graders and streamlining classroom management for teachers. If you have any questions or concerns about this process please reach out to help@troy.k12.mi.us.
Leonard Honored with Promising Practice Award from Character.org
Leonard Elementary School has been honored with a Promising Practice award from Character.org! This award recognizes programs that are unique, effective, and replicable initiatives that inspire "goodness in action" and contribute to the field of character development. Leonard was honored for their Family Circle initiative. Way to go Leopards!
Dedicating Henderson's Home at Costello
This week, Costello students and members of the Troy community gathered to honor the memory of Dave Henderson, a devoted Costello parent who passed away last year. OneTroy came together to celebrate Dave’s commitment to making the Costello ball field a great place to play and his passion for team sports. Students from Eric Flessa’s class at TCCHS helped create a personalized home plate for the field, along with a second version for the Henderson family to keep at home.
Following the ceremony, students kicked off their annual field day with a teachers vs. students kickball game, played on the very field Dave worked so hard to maintain.
Below you will find the fall sports tryout schedules for both Troy High and Athens. Thanks to our coaches for setting these dates early so that everyone can plan ahead!
