Pamlico County Primary's Innovative Use of Geodes Reading Inspires Curiosity
Pamlico Primary School is embracing an exciting approach to literacy that aligns with the Science of Reading by integrating Geodes decodable reader sets into its curriculum. These beautifully designed books, known as "Definitely Geodes," are crafted with an evidence-based approach that supports comprehension, fluency, and foundational reading skills for young learners. More than just reading practice, Geodes provides students with a window into science, social studies, and cultures from around the world—building background knowledge that strengthens both literacy and broader academic skills.
The Geodes books are a part of the school’s commitment to applying proven reading instruction strategies. These texts allow teachers to integrate key reading principles and foundational skills in alignment with the Science of Reading, which highlights the importance of systematic phonics, phonemic awareness, and comprehension-building for literacy success. Each book in the Geodes series serves as a decodable reader, designed to support and reinforce students’ growing vocabulary and reading fluency. By using these sets, Pamlico Primary School educators are enabling young readers to approach text with confidence, building literacy skills that will serve them throughout their education.
Pamlico Primary School teachers incorporate these readers to facilitate the development of comprehension strategies. Through guided instruction, students learn how to analyze and connect with the content, asking questions, making inferences, and drawing connections between what they read and what they know about the world. This practice with real-world content keeps students engaged and encourages deeper comprehension, which is essential for meaningful learning.
Assistant Superintendent, Crystal Dixon, is enthusiastic about the new reading program, stating, “The Geodes sets bring a rich learning experience into every reading lesson. Students are not only developing essential reading skills, but they’re also exploring the world around them. This is exactly the kind of approach that can ignite a love for learning and build a strong foundation for future academic success.”
Pamlico Primary School’s use of Geodes is a testament to its commitment to equipping students with the tools they need to become fluent, confident readers. By aligning instruction with the Science of Reading and providing diverse and engaging content, the school is paving the way for students to not only succeed in literacy but also develop a lifelong curiosity about the world around them.
Fred A. Anderson Elementary Pilots Program to Boost Vocabulary and Comprehension
Fred A. Anderson Elementary School is thrilled to introduce the Scholastic WORD program as a new schoolwide initiative to strengthen vocabulary acquisition and deepen reading comprehension. In this pilot program, students participate daily across all subject areas, enriching their language skills and building a robust foundation for reading success. This comprehensive approach not only supports vocabulary growth but also aims to improve overall reading achievement for every student in our “All-Star” community.
The Scholastic WORD program is designed to accelerate vocabulary development through intentional and repeated exposure to high-utility words, making language learning an integrated part of every day. With a curriculum that reinforces vocabulary across subjects, students can encounter, understand, and apply words in multiple contexts, reinforcing retention and improving their grasp of academic content. By enhancing vocabulary in this way, Scholastic WORD equips students with essential skills for stronger comprehension across reading, science, social studies, and more.
Teachers at Fred A. Anderson are equally enthusiastic about how the daily integration of Scholastic WORD reinforces learning. The program’s structure allows students to revisit vocabulary in ways that deepen understanding and solidify retention, which are essential for reading comprehension and effective learning in all areas. This consistency is key to the school’s commitment to innovative literacy instruction that fosters measurable progress in student achievement.
Fred A. Anderson Elementary School looks forward to assessing the outcomes of Scholastic WORD and observing the positive impact on reading achievement across the school. With this program, our All-Stars are on a clear path to becoming confident, skilled readers who are equipped with a powerful and growing vocabulary that supports success inside and outside the classroom.
Celebrating Growth and Achievement at Pamlico County Middle School
Pamlico County Middle School (PCMS) has achieved an extraordinary milestone, exceeding growth expectations for the 2023-2024 school year. This accomplishment stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment of the entire PCMS staff to support each and every student’s success. By surpassing growth standards, PCMS has demonstrated the school community’s dedication to fostering academic improvement and creating a supportive, achievement-focused environment for students.
One standout area in this celebration is the performance of the middle school math department, which has excelled above both state and regional averages across all three grade levels. This achievement reflects the department’s hard work and innovative strategies to boost student understanding and proficiency in a subject crucial to future academic and career success. From sixth to eighth grade, the dedication of PCMS math teachers has created an environment where students can build essential skills, grow in confidence, and reach new levels of achievement.
This year’s results highlight more than just numbers; they underscore the heart of the PCMS mission. The faculty’s commitment to addressing diverse student needs through tailored support and engaging instruction has had a profound impact, helping students unlock their potential in meaningful ways.
The school’s achievements this year not only bring pride to the PCMS community but also emphasize the value of setting high expectations and providing students with the tools they need to succeed. This celebration is an affirmation of the progress being made in Pamlico County Schools and the positive, lasting impact of a committed educational team.
As PCMS moves forward, this remarkable growth serves as a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when educators, students, and families work together. The entire school community looks forward to building on this success, continuing to exceed expectations, and guiding each student toward a bright and promising future. Congratulations to the PCMS team, particularly the math department, for this outstanding accomplishment—an achievement that will inspire future success across the district.
Pamlico County High School Celebrates “B” Rating and Prepares for Accreditation
Pamlico County High School (PCHS) is celebrating a significant achievement: earning a “B” letter grade for the 2023-2024 school year. This accomplishment reflects the hard work and dedication of students, staff, and faculty, who are all focused on fostering an environment of excellence and growth. With this success, PCHS is now setting its sights on another critical milestone: the process of accreditation through Cognia, an esteemed independent organization that evaluates schools to ensure they meet high standards in education, faculty quality, and facilities.
Accreditation through Cognia is more than just a stamp of approval; it’s a rigorous evaluation process that will validate the quality of education at PCHS. Cognia’s standards focus on academic rigor, educational practices, and the effectiveness of support systems in place for students and staff. By achieving accreditation, Pamlico County High School will confirm its commitment to providing a high-caliber education that prepares students for success beyond high school.
A key benefit of accreditation is its recognition by colleges, universities, and other educational institutions. Accredited high schools have diplomas that are widely accepted by post-secondary institutions, making it easier for students to transfer credits and access broader opportunities in higher education. This accreditation will give PCHS students a competitive edge as they pursue college admissions, scholarships, and other future endeavors.
As Pamlico County High School embarks on this accreditation journey, the school community remains dedicated to continuous improvement. The accreditation process will not only evaluate current standards but will also provide valuable insights and recommendations for further enhancing the educational experience at PCHS. This achievement, along with the upcoming accreditation, reinforces the school’s dedication to excellence and its mission to empower every student to succeed.
Congratulations to Pamlico County High School on this well-deserved “B” rating and best wishes as they pursue Cognia accreditation. This milestone will benefit all current and future students, giving them the confidence and credentials they need to achieve their dreams.
National Board-Certified Teachers in Pamlico County Schools
In Pamlico County Schools, board-certified teachers represent the pinnacle of professional dedication and instructional excellence. These educators have achieved National Board Certification, a rigorous process that reflects their unwavering commitment to students, their mastery of effective teaching practices, and their role as leaders in the field. We are honored to recognize the board-certified teachers within our district: Jennifer Rice at Pamlico County Primary School; Melanie Brinson, Jan Fabian, Catherine Revels, and Dawn Wilson at Fred Anderson Elementary School; Elizabeth Sanderson at Pamlico County Middle School; and Holly Bradley, Shawn Carawan, and Brandi Philipps at Pamlico County High School. Each of these educators brings an unparalleled dedication to their classrooms, enhancing the educational experience and fostering a positive impact on our community.
What is National Board Certification?
National Board Certification is one of the most prestigious and challenging certifications a teacher can earn. It involves an in-depth evaluation process, where educators demonstrate their knowledge, instructional skills, and the ability to support student growth. Teachers complete assessments and submit detailed portfolios with evidence of their work and reflections on their teaching methods. This certification is more than an acknowledgment of experience; it requires a teacher to meet rigorous standards that prove they can inspire students, adjust to diverse learning needs, and create a dynamic classroom environment.
Why Board Certification Matters
Board-certified teachers are shown to have a profound impact on student learning outcomes. Research indicates that students taught by board-certified teachers achieve higher academic gains than their peers. These teachers are skilled at tailoring their instruction to meet each student's unique needs, ensuring that all learners can reach their full potential.
In North Carolina, board-certified teachers receive a 12% salary increase, recognizing the additional commitment and skill required to achieve this certification. This support is not just an acknowledgment of the hard work involved but an investment in the continued excellence of public education. The salary increase also serves as an incentive for other educators to pursue board certification, promoting a culture of ongoing professional development within the district.

Pamlico County’s SkillsUSA chapters from both the middle and high school levels participated in leadership training at Camp Dixie. While the middle and high school students attended on separate dates, each group engaged in team-building activities, communication workshops, and leadership exercises designed to promote growth, collaboration, and confidence. These experiences not only support students in becoming effective leaders within SkillsUSA but also provide them with tools that will benefit them in all future endeavors.
"SkillsUSA at Camp Dixie provided our students with an environment to learn about responsibility, team dynamics, and personal accountability," said one of the program advisors. "Watching them grow as individuals and as a team has been incredibly rewarding."

This event brought together FFA members from across the region, giving them the chance to learn from seasoned leaders, practice public speaking, and participate in team-building challenges. These experiences are vital for developing the qualities that make strong, community-focused leaders.
The Fall Leadership School also introduced students to agricultural industry trends and advancements, underscoring the importance of leadership within the agriculture sector. Students returned from the event energized and more committed than ever to the values of leadership, hard work, and community service that are at the heart of FFA.
The Importance of Leadership Development in CTE Programs
Through their involvement in CTSOs like SkillsUSA and FFA, CTE students at Pamlico County Schools are learning valuable life skills that complement their technical education. Leadership development opportunities such as Camp Dixie and the Fall Leadership School help students refine essential skills, including teamwork, problem-solving, communication, and self-confidence. These experiences encourage students to envision themselves as leaders and contributors in their chosen fields and in their communities.
Pamlico County Schools is proud of its CTE students for embracing these opportunities to grow, learn, and lead. By participating in these leadership events, students are taking proactive steps toward a successful future, both in their careers and in their personal lives.
