Hard to believe it is the last day of March and spring break is about to begin. We sure are looking forward to spring and the warmer weather as we push towards the end of the school year. After spring break there are only seven weeks left of school with many activities happening. Athletics will be busy with Forensics and Swimming traveling to Illinois and Ohio for an invitational and conference championship. Junior/Senior trips are happening at the end of the month with students traveling to Washington, D.C. and Cincinatti focusing on ECC and travel skills. Please join us for the High School music concert on the 28th of April. As you can see, things are busy at KSB, but as always, I am so grateful to all of you for entrusting the care and education of your children to us.

High School 🎤

What: Recital featuring KSB high schoolers who take lessons one/one or in a group format.

High School

High school math students continue to work hard each day.

Algebra 2 students are wrapping up their unit on measures of central tendency.

Geometry students are preparing for their unit on right triangle trigonometry by applying the Pythagorean Theorem and Triangle Angle Sum to find lengths of sides and measures of angles in triangles.

Algebra 1 students continue to explore quadratic expressions in order to prepare for learning about quadratic equations and functions.

Middle School

Middle School Math has been busy building on concepts they have previously learned this year. A quote from a sixth grader this week in my class “ my brain hurts and I am ready for spring break” is a great way to describe all the learning taking place. 8th grade has been translating, reflecting, rotating and dilatating on the coordinate plane. They have found a great use for all the craft bracelets they have made (see picture). 7th grade has been learning about volume and surface area and constructing 3D figures using geometro materials (see picture). 6th grade has started an algebra unit and they are discovering that letters (variables) have a whole new meaning in math class.

Elementary

In the K/1 classroom students are reviewing daily their counting and cardinality skills.

Student have been exploring and learning to use a beginner abacus. They're learning to use an abacus to build their understanding of place value, as well as add and subtract.

Ask your child to show them how to set and clear their abacus:)

As we hop into our spring break our elementary students are finishing their Goalball unit and moving into spring holiday tag games that increase their gross motor skills and focus on chasing and fleeing. Our Goalball unit was great, and our students paired it with their JV sports game which was a huge success with them beating our 8th graders!

Middle Schoolers are starting their tennis unit. They are starting with ground strokes, both forehand and backhand, to the wall. When they return from their break they will begin serving and get into some rally style games with a partner.

High Schoolers requested more information on 5-a-side soccer and they are learning how the skills are different from traditional soccer. We are trying to alter our brains and skills to accommodate the difference playing with eye shades make compared to sighted soccer. The residential program accepts used clothing that you may have and no longer need. You may donate your used clothing, accessories, shoes, etc. to the dormitory as a tax deductible donation. You would receive a letter as a receipt of the charitable donation that can be used on your taxes. If donating, please clearly identify the items and send them to Allison Chandler, Residential Director. Please accept our gratitude in advance for any donations.

Summer School:

KSB is excited to offer summer school programming for statewide students again this year. The dates and times for the program are listed below. KSB dorms will be open with limited space for all programs. Transportation is not provided by KSB. There is no cost for our programming this year.

Summer Work Program:

KSB is happy to offer summer work opportunities for statewide students who are blind and visually impaired again this summer. Please see below for the requirements for eligibility. Apply here:

Summer Work Program Requirements:

1. Open to students aged 15 or older, up to age 20, by June 1, 2023. (Note: Program IS open to seniors graduating in May 2023.)

2. Students will complete a morning career class before departing for work each morning.

3. Student will need to complete all components of the application process.

Application process components are as follows:

• Summer Work Program Student Application
• 2 Letters of Recommendation (Letters of recommendation CANNOT be completed by a family member)
• Student Resume

4. Students are expected to complete an interview with the Summer Work Program coordinators. These interviews will be complete either in-person, online or over the phone.

5. Students and parent(s) must attend a mandatory orientation meeting prior to the start of the Summer Work Program, following student registration at Kentucky School for the Blind.

6. Students are paid through the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. Students will need to be considered vendors/consumers through the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation.

The Office of Vocational Rehabilitation is accepting applications for Coca-Cola Merit Scholarships through May 31st

The Kentucky Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR), in partnership with Coca-Cola, will be awarding four $5,200 merit scholarships for entering freshmen, undergraduate and graduate students, who will be enrolled in an accredited college or technical program for Fall 2023. OVR, who administers the scholarship program, will award the scholarships to four consumers who are legally blind, to help with educational financial needs such as tuition, fees, room and board and assistive technology.

To be eligible to compete for a scholarship, applicants must be an OVR consumer with an IPE, be legally blind, have maintained at least a 2.75 GPA, and be enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited educational program for the 2023-24 school year. Students must submit their application and all required materials by May 31st.

The Office of Vocational Rehabilitation and the University of Kentucky Visual Impairment Program would like to extend an invitation for students to join us for the 2023 PATH summer program "PATH TO A HEALTHY LIFE"! We will focus on many aspects including cooking, healthy eating, stress relief, and much more. Please note that this program is not all about physical health.

Our no cost program will run from July 16th-23rd at the University of Kentucky. It is intended for 14-21 year old students who intend to pursue post-secondary training or work after exiting high school. If a the student is leaving high school and not pursuing post-secondary training, they will not be eligible to attend.

Due to the nature of our program, we will have highly trained staff to work hands on with students as they learn different ways to create a healthy lifestyle both now and in their future. The application is here PATH Summer Application. The registration deadline is May 15th.
