Thank you so much to our families who brought in, purchased and gifted something to our staff this week. What a very thoughtful gesture.
Our staff especially loved all of the notes that were written to them by students and parents.
Thank you for showing them all love, that they truly deserve!!
Mrs. Rice's Reflection
Riverside Families,
Happy Mother’s Day weekend!
A mother’s love for her child is one of the most powerful and universal forces in the world. No matter where we live, many of us share similar hopes and dreams for our children: fulfilling lives, happiness, health, meaningful relationships, and success in school and beyond.
Mother’s Day is a special time for children to honor the love, care, and sacrifices of their mothers. Here at Riverside, we know how fortunate many of us are to have the opportunity to celebrate with flowers, treats, or kind words. But for many children around the world, that opportunity may not exist. Instead of focusing on school and building their future, they may be helping to support their families through hard work in fields, factories, or other work. For those children, the opportunities are different than our students, but the greatest gift they can give their mothers is possibly the same as our greatest gifts - their children’s effort to access and embrace education—a path that can lead to a brighter future.
As we honor our mothers this year, we also want to recognize the important role mothers—and all caregivers—play in shaping the academic and personal success of our students. Your dedication to your child’s growth is reflected in everything they do here at Riverside Elementary.
We thank you for your continued partnership and commitment to your child’s education. Wishing all our Riverside mothers, grandmothers, and caregivers a joyful and well-deserved Mother’s Day.
Mrs. Tara Rice
Intervention Information
There are five essential components of reading that have been proven to aid students in their ability to read. The best way an adult at home can help their child be successful in reading is to help them master these skills. When students have a grasp of the five parts of reading, they will be able to not only learn from a story but also enjoy their time reading.
Identify and use individual sounds to create words. Teaching kids to know all their letters and sounds, then apply them in different ways to make words, change sounds in words, etc. is the foundation of reading. Having students start with a word such as car and change one letter at a time orally (no written letters) helps them to know their sounds. This is phonemic awareness.
Teach students to understand there is a relationship between written letters/words and sounds, they must be taught that these letters go together in a specific way to make words. This skill is known as phonics.
Being able to read a story quickly, accurately, with the ability to recognize words automatically without stopping often to decode or sound out words.
Building vocabulary allows students to understand the information learned in stories and comprehend the main idea of texts.
Learning comprehension strategies to help students understand what they are reading, why they are reading it as well the purpose of the story. This can include active questions before, during and after reading, visualization, utilizing graphic organizers, etc.
