FVE NEWS
January 2025
DEAR FRONTIER VALLEY FAMILIES,
Happy New Year! We hope you and your family had a wonderful winter break. As we begin the second semester, it’s a great time for our students to set new personal goals for learning and growth. We are excited to see all the possibilities that lie ahead in the coming months. It’s wonderful to see all of our happy buffaloes back in the routine of school this week!
We are also excited to highlight our FVE Apple Award recipients. This year, our certified teacher representative is Dr. Ruqayyah Jennings, our school psychologist. Dr. Jennings has been supporting the social-emotional wellness of our students for 5 years, and we are grateful for her dedication. Additionally, Kelly Taylor, one of our educational assistants, will represent our classified staff. Kelly has served as a classroom assistant for 3 years, making a positive impact on our students every day. We are thrilled that both Kelly and Ru will be celebrated at the district Apple Awards on Saturday, March 29th. Congratulations to both on this well deserved recognition!
Cheerfully,
Kiersten Hall

Students will always be monitored and will never be left unattended with other students or caretakers! To ensure your child’s safety, we will have a ratio of 1 caretaker to 4 students. These caretakers consist of trusted Legend’s Student Government members and Legend Staff members. We will have a registered nurse on sight for any emergency care. Below is also a flier with some of this information on it.
Thank you so much for your involvement! Attached below is a video about the impact of Make-A-Wish that we would love for you to watch and show your kids.

STATE ASSESSMENT INFORMATION
Parents/guardians may excuse their students from testing if they wish to do so by following this process.
MID YEAR IREADY RESULTS
We are so very proud of our students’ progress at the mid-year mark! Our teachers have put in so much instructionally and our school scores are displaying it! The charts below compare our results from the beginning of the year to the mid year results. Our goal is to provide intervention and data-driven instruction to increase the on grade level (green), while decreasing the below grade level (red).
OPEN ENROLLMENT
Round 2 of open enrollment starts on January 22, 2025. For more information on how to apply for open enrollment, please see the DCSD information HERE. If you have questions for our registrar, you can contact jjohnson11@dcsdk12.org
UPCOMING CogAT TESTING
Dear Parents/Guardians,
As part of the DCSD Universal Screening process and our commitment to equitable identification for gifted programming, DCSD will administer the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT 7) Feb. 3rd-13th. This assessment indicates the level and pattern of cognitive development of a student in comparison to grade and age mates. Please see below for specific information based on your child’s current grade.
2nd Grade Universal Screen
As part of this process, ALL students in 2nd grade who have not been identified for gifted programming will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) in February. This assessment indicates the level and pattern of cognitive development of a student in comparison to grade and age mates. These general reasoning abilities, which start developing at birth and continue through early adulthood, are influenced by experiences gained both in and out of school.
If your child is already identified for gifted programming, they will not participate in this universal screen testing. Your Gifted Education Facilitator will contact you directly with more detailed information about this process.
Gifted Identification Referral Testing
If your child is in grades K, 1, 3, 4 and you believe he/she needs evaluation for Gifted Identification and Services, you may refer your child for testing by initiating the Gifted Identification Process.
NOTE: Requesting this assessment automatically initiates the process to evaluate for Gifted Identification.
Please request CogAT testing for your child by completing the Referral for Gifted Identification linked:
Upon receipt of this form the Gifted Education Facilitator will connect with you to discuss next steps in the gifted identification process.
If you have questions regarding the CogAT assessment, please contact:

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
This month, counselor lessons will be about problem-solving strategies. Grades K-2 will focus on helpful learning strategies (being a good listener, showing effort) and 3-5 grades will focus on conflict resolution, including size of the problem, compromising, and apologizing. We are also finishing up our Bullying Prevention Unit. I am looking forward to seeing all our little buffalos continue to learn and grow!
Thank you to those of you who filled out the form for our Career Day. If you would like to participate in our Career Day, please let me know by filling out this form.
Please reach out anytime if I can provide support. Also, check out my growing Community Resource Sheet.
