What We're Reading: VPL Book Chats
I might have a soft spot for damaged characters, it seems. I love character studies of women dealing with family trauma, crippling loneliness, and seemingly irredeemable character flaws. 'Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine' by Gail Honeyman captured adult depression due to childhood trauma caused by a psychotic mother to such a degree that I couldn't help but feel empathy for Eleanor. I couldn't help but adore her and want to see her grow and heal. But what I enjoyed most was how Honeyman showcased how difficult it can be to make friends as an adult when you're dealing with trauma/mental health issues. I highly recommend this book (available at the library and on the Libby app) and with a Goodreads rating of 4.24, you can't go wrong. Happy reading, friends! ~Heather
We just finished discussing our latest Staff Book Club pick, 'The Giver of Stars' by Jojo Moyes. Set in 1930's America, this novel tells the story of several members of the Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky. Driven by a variety of motives, the librarians overcome some very personal challenges to deliver books by horseback in their mountainous community. Our discussion centered on which of the characters we most identified with, our thoughts on the choices they made within the novel, and what parallels we could draw between their library and ours.
Our book club is a wonderful way for us to connect with each other as staff members and we look forward to our next book.
Happy reading!
~Kelly Henkle, Library Director
