A message from the principal
Happy October!
At Dayton Elementary, we believe strongly in the importance of home and school connections. We are looking forward to the opportunity to meet with all families during conferences this month. If you haven’t signed up yet, please do so by calling our office at 763-506-2200.
During the month of October, our school is learning about Responsibility. Character Strong defines responsibility as “taking action and understanding the impact of our choices.”
Families can learn more about how to support conversations at home with these resources:

Please note that there is no school on Friday, October 4 or October 7 for staff development. There is also no school on Thursday, October 17 and Friday, October 18 for MEA.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
Budget reduction and realignment: Community Meeting Tonight
A number of factors converged in early 2024 that led to the need to reduce district expenditures by $26 million. Community meetings are taking place to review proposed solutions and get community feedback. The Champlin community meeting is taking place tonight, Wednesday, October 2 from 6-7pm at Champlin Park High School. More information can be found here.
October Specialists Highlights
Art
To kick off the start of our 24-25 school year, 1st-5th graders studied Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama. She is 95 years old, and has been creating art since she was a child. Students learned about her use of symbols, specifically polka dots, to represent people and our interconnectedness. They created a crayon resist heart painting in her bright, whimsical, abstract art style.
CORE
Students in K-1 are working on iPads this year. We have been going through apps that they will use in school; where they are located and how to sign in. Students in 2nd grade are getting more comfortable with chromebooks; signing in, learning different ways to get to apps, and where a few new apps are located. Grades 3-5 completed scavenger hunts to find apps they are familiar with and are also working on typing club, which is always a student favorite.
Explorations
This month in Explorations, we are diving into a variety of exciting topics across the grade levels! Here's a look at what your child will be exploring:
Kindergarten: We are learning about what plants need to survive, such as sunlight, water, and air. It’s a great time to talk about nature at home!
1st Grade: We’re exploring the different parts of a plant, how seeds grow, and how seeds are dispersed. Your child will be able to identify the roots, stems, leaves, fruit, and flowers.
2nd Grade: Our focus is on materials and their properties. We’re discovering how different materials are used and why certain properties make them special for different purposes.
3rd Grade: After working as a science and engineering team to design a pet umbrella based on materials and their properties, we are now exploring the forces that act on objects, such as gravity, push, and pull.
4th Grade: We’re studying the U.S. government and tribal governments, learning about how these systems function and the importance of leadership and governance.
5th Grade: Our journey takes us back in time as we explore ancient civilizations. We’ll uncover how these societies shaped our world today!
We look forward to a month full of discovery and learning!
Library
Students have been introduced to the library and procedures for checking out books. All students are able to check out books to bring home to read, and they are excited to share them with their families! Each week, you will receive an email reminder the day before your child’s scheduled library day. The purpose of this email is to inform you of the items your child has checked out, so that you can remind them to return the books and select new ones. Thank you for helping your child with this!
Our book fair will be located in our gym during evening conference times ONLY.
The book fair will be open to students and families on:
Oct. 2 4:15 pm - 8:15 pm
Oct. 7 3:00 pm - 8:15 pm
Oct. 8 4:15 pm - 7:30 pm
Online shopping is also available at our Dayton book fair site: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/dayton
Music
In music class, grades 3 through 5 are learning about a Mexican song and dance called Los Machetes for Hispanic Heritage Month. 2nd grade is working on a song where they get to sing “hello” in nine different languages. Kindergarten and first grade are hard at work practicing beat and rhythm as well as songs with lots of actions to keep them busy.
5th grade families, please help your students to locate their recorders that they got last year. They will need them at school in the coming months. If your fifth grader does not have a recorder, I will send information home with your student soon on how to order one.
PhyEd
Please prepare your child by having gym shoes for their safety and others! Encourage your child to participate, even if it is hard. How to tie…
Hello Dayton families!
My name is Shantae (Sh-Ann-Tay-EE) Webber, I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapy (LMFT). I work for People Incorporated and am the new mental health therapist at Dayton Elementary!
My work at Dayton is aligned with outpatient mental health services someone would receive in a clinic setting. The great thing about being able to work in a school is the ease in access to connecting with students during the school day which can reduce stress related to work and/or activity schedules. I typically meet with students 1x/week for 40-45 minutes (subject to increase/decrease on a case-by-case basis) as an added support to not only their school experiences but also their experiences outside of the classroom.
I will be working closely with Michele Lange (School Counselor) to best serve the students of Dayton throughout this school year and beyond. If you have questions about the service I provide or are interested in services for your child(ren), please feel free to reach out to me or Michele.
I'm excited to be here!

Parent Education and Family Engagement
Happy October, Dayton families! October means that conferences are already coming up! To make the most of your child's conference, here a few tips below:
- Be on time! This is sometimes easier said than done, but when you can be on time (or even early), it helps make sure you and everyone else have enough time with teachers.
- Think about what questions you have for your child's teacher. Some options include: What can I do at home to support my child's learning? What will my child be learning in the future? What is the best way to reach you with questions or concerns?
For more in-depth information about conferences, please reach out to elizabeth.korzenowski@ahschools.us so I can send you our (longer) take home tip!
