School closed next week for Thankgiving Break. School resumes, Mon. Dec. 2nd
Dear La Ballona Families!
As we pause to reflect on the first trimester of the school year, we celebrate the incredible experiences we've shared as a community at La Ballona. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for each one of you! From back-to-school night, PTA meetings, and picture day to our Friday family days, assemblies, spirit week, Fall Festival, and coffee chats and parent education workshops, the list of our engaging activities goes on. These events would not be possible without the tremendous support from our families.
Some of you contribute by engaging in discussions, while others lend a hand in various ways. This spirit of collaboration is what makes our school truly exceptional, where everyone feels embraced and included. Thank you!
As we approach Thanksgiving break, Dr. Godbey and I want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our community. Your unwavering support, active participation, valuable input, adaptability, and kindness mean the world to us. We look forward to welcoming all students and families back on Monday, December 2, 2024.
We look forward to our continued partnership as we prepare for the upcoming Teacher-Parent conferences beginning December 9th-December 17th (teachers will provide you with more information).
Stay PAWSitive!

Tree Lightening Ceremony~Choir Performance on December 5th!
Dear 4th and 5th Grade Choir Families,
We have met extensively as a music team and with the city to continue the clear organization we had last year at the tree lighting. Here is a timeline and what to expect for the afternoon/evening of the ceremony, including a route map to/from the stage: Performances will begin at 6:00pm.
- 5:20 pm: Principals arrive and students arrive in the district parking lot at 3927 Van Buren Pl, CC, 90232. We will meet in front of the large mural of the Palihotel. There should be about 170 students total as it is just the 4th/5th grade singers performing this year.
- Each choir will have their own signs with the name of their school (parent volunteers will be making these). Feel free to bring an additional school sign to carry if you wish;
- There will be people in the district parking lot helping to pass out wristbands for choir students who have pre-registered to participate in the sledding in the snow *after* they perform. There will also be paper waivers to sign on the day-of for families who have not pre-registered.
- Additionally, the middle school choir and El Marino Japanese choir will be meeting in the district parking lot as well;
- There will be NO hot chocolate in the district lot this year, BUT it will be available in the Culver Steps plaza before and after the show.
- 5:30 pm: We will warm up the choir as a group. Parents can stand back from the group, if they decide to watch the rehearsal before the concert (i.e. not right next to their student).
- 5:45 pm: We begin to walk over to the stage for the performance. A few things to note:
- There will be Free Masons from Culver City wearing their regalia to also escort us to the stage again this year
- All of the parent volunteers will be walking with us, holding up the signs for each school
- We will be entering the stage from Stage Right, just like last year. We will walk across the street from the district lot, walk through the alley, and enter the stage from the side of the stage that is closest to the district lot (the right side of the stage if you are standing on the stage).
- La Ballona will walk first, followed by El Marino, Lin Howe, El Rincon, and Farragut will be last (we will already be in this order when we line up in the rehearsal).
- Your main job is to help us get through the crowd, onto the stage, and help get the students all onto the stage safely by 5:55 pm. You can come on the stage with us to help arrange the students if necessary.
- 6:00 pm: Students perform. We are singing three short songs.
- 6:10 pm: After our last song ("Seven Feet of Snow"), the MC will announce to the crowd that one family member per family should walk back to the district lot and meet their student there, then return to the tree lighting to watch the end of the show.
- 6:15 pm: Once back at the district lot, family members meet their child(ren), then are expected to walk back to the tree lighting to watch the rest of the show. Please be patient as we need to ensure all students have walked back. Once we are at the lot, you can pick your child up.
- 6:45-7:00pm Show ends and students are encouraged to go sledding, etc.
Thanks so much again for all of your support, and we look forward to seeing you on 12/5!

What's for Breakfast and/or Lunch in December?
Dear Families,
The CCUSD Wellness Policy mandates that classroom celebrations that involve food during the school day must be limited to no more than one party per class per month. It is against Board Policy, PB 5030(a), to provide foods, such as pizza or sweets i.e. cupcakes, for an entire classroom at any time prior to the end of the last lunch period. Also, foods containing trans-fats cannot be offered or served to students during classroom celebrations.
In order to prevent health risks to students from potential allergic reactions (to peanuts, wheat or soy) as well as safety and sanitation issues please comply with the above stated CCUSD Board Policies. Prior to bringing treats to the classroom, you must obtain permission from the classroom teacher. Foods such as fresh fruit or vegetables, popcorn (no caramel corn – it is considered candy), baked chips or 100% fruit juice such as Capri Sun are recommended. It is very important that we demonstrate our compliance with these standards for wholesome nutrition and wellness.
Thank you for your cooperation,
Food Services

Annual Sponsor-a-Family
CCUSD recognizes that the holiday season can be stressful for families who are most in need. Again this year, CCUSD School and Family Support Services is coordinating various district-wide efforts to support our CCUSD families in need during the holiday season to increase the joy and lessen the stress.
At this time, we are excited to announce our Annual Sponsor-a-Family Program. The program will enable families/groups of families/organizations to provide gifts for a CCUSD family in need. Both families will remain anonymous. Prior to the Thanksgiving break, sponsor families will receive the list of wishes and needs for each member of one family. Our request is that the sponsor family/group of families/organizations purchase at least one wish and one need for each member listed. If you provide a gift card, please include the activation receipt. All gifts will be dropped off at the CCUSD District Office Annex (located on Van Buren between the Palihotel and Lin Howe Elementary school) on December 12 and 13. School and Family Support Services staff will distribute the gifts on December 17 and 18. If you are able to make the holiday season special for another family, please click on the link below and complete the form.

Celebrating Giving Tuesday as a “District-wide Day of Giving”
Are you looking for an alternative to more "stuff" this holiday season? You can invite
La Ballona grandparents to join CCEF's Grandparents Circle! Grandparents
often play a key role in nurturing our students, and making a donation to enrich their

- with templates for your student to make the request.
