A message from Career Academy Principal, Mrs. Katie Towler
I continue to be impressed with the amazing things that happen daily at the Career Academy.
Just today I spent time in the agriculture classroom where students were digging into an article on how Covid-19 is impacting farm veterinarians. Students read the article, answered questions, shared their learning with their classmates, and then responded to the article with a written assignment. The dialogue in the classroom was energetic, and the life experiences the students shared were unique and profound.
After class I walked towards the fashion and interior design classroom where I passed three students who were working on a compound machine for engineering. They built the machine and kept detailed notes with photos in a notebook, documenting their work. Their task for the day was to calculate the mechanical advantage of their compound machine. I could have watched them work for hours.
Eventually I made it to the fashion classroom where I visited with two students who were working with patterns for their next project. They were making calculations to determine how much material they would need and were working through the design process based on their vision for their final product.
What never fails to amaze me about the work happening here is the relevant learning that takes place. Students take the reading, writing, speaking, and math skills they've been learning for years and put them into practice, sometimes without even realizing it is happening.
As you begin to plan for the next school year I hope you'll consider trying a class at the Career Academy or Harry Hopkins campus. We would be happy to help guide you towards a good fit, or answer any questions you may have.

A message from Career Academy School Counselor, Mr. Jeff Lucas
FAFSA Season: Seniors, if you have not started your FAFSA, consider doing so soon. Most colleges have a priority deadline. Check the deadline of any colleges/universities you are applying to. If you need assistance with your FAFSA, see your home high school counselor or Mr. Lucas at the Career Academy.
College/University Scholarships: Along with FAFSA priority deadlines, most colleges have a scholarship deadline. Some of these deadlines can be as early as December 1st. Scholarships can be automatic and included in your application process. Some though require a separate application. Check the financial aid link at all schools you are applying to or contact the college/university admissions and/or financial aid office.
Other Scholarship Opportunities: Additional scholarship opportunities for seniors can be found in their Canvas accounts by clicking on the HS District Advisory course. Scholarships are grouped by local, state and national categories. More info about accessing these scholarship links will be available in December.
ACT/College Readiness: Need help with the college planning process and preparing for the ACT Test? The Career Academy is offering four sections of College Planning/ACT prep for 2nd semester. This course is a great opportunity to cover a variety of college planning topics as well as improving ones ACT score for college admissions and scholarship opportunities. See your counselor about adding this course for 2nd semester.

Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.
