Student Focused-World Class
A Word from Holly...
In KCS, our vision is “Student Focused-World Class.” Our VISION is what we want to achieve as a system. Our MISSION….explains how we aspire to go about achieving our VISION.
Often, many organizations have mission statements that nobody really knows or remembers. They may include key phrases that people remember (like “life-long learners”), but no one really knows or lives out the mission from day to day. In order to really live out the mission of our school, we need to consider what we really do every day that will help us be a system that is “student focused-world class.”
I am attaching a link below and I would like you to carefully consider three VERBS that you believe capture the essence of what we do every day in order to achieve the vision.
For example, my church’s MISSION statement is the following:
LOVING God
GROWING Together
REACHING Out
Each Sunday during announcements, the upcoming opportunities of the week are categorized into the components of the MISSION. We talk about what opportunities exist in the coming week that invite members to LOVE God. A mid-week worship service might be an example of what opportunity might be shared. A BIBLE Study may be another example of a way members can achieve the mission of GROWING Together. Finally, participating in the firewood ministry may be a way that someone chooses to REACH Out.
Another example is the Tennessee Principals’ Association (TPA). TPA’s mission is:
SUPPORT
EMPOWER
CONNECT
TPA members use the MISSION statement to communicate why principals would want to join TPA in what we call an elevator conversation (how can we explain our mission in the amount of time it takes to travel from floor to floor in an elevator with a potential member). SO….we can quickly explain that TPA SUPPORTS principals with liability insurance, EMPOWERS principals by providing quality professional development through publications and through an annual conference and by CONNECTING principals to principals across the state through networking opportunities.
SO….Here is the challenge!
Use VERBS……and one at a time, consider what ACTION WORDS convey the work we do every day that helps us provide a “STUDENT FOCUSED-WORLD CLASS” learning environment for students.
This work will provide the pre-work that we will use at the beginning of the school year, to create a MISSION statement unique to John Sevier Middle School and who we aspire to be every day.

- Leadership Team--Last summer, you nominated representatives from every department in every grade level to serve on the JSMS Leadership Team. In order to have consistency, I have asked those same people to serve as second year on the Leadership Team. Next year, we will begin cycling people off of the Leadership Team so that we have a yearly rotation of about 1/3 going off so that we have new ideas and perspectives joining our team each year.
- If you are a coach of a fall sport, please send me your schedules asap. Also, please send those schedules to Debbie Hash and Michelle Loudermilk so that we can get those dates on our calendars. Thanks!
- Make sure you are reading Elements of Grading by Doug Reeves. Our instructional faculty meetings will be based on this work throughout the year. Also, remember to take your Strengths Finder test and add your top five strengths to our Google doc. We will do some pre-service work using your results during our opening faculty meeting.
