Meet JJ Eagleston!
New GT Teacher at Cory Elementary
"For there is always light. If only we're brave enough to see it. If only we're brave enough to be it." --Amanda Gorman
Introduction
First, I’d like to welcome you to a new school year at Cory Elementary. As this will be my first year as a GT Teacher at Cory Elementary, I’d like to take a little time to introduce myself to you.
I came to Colorado after graduating from Oklahoma State with a BA in English. I spent five years in beautiful Crested Butte before realizing I wasn’t going to be a professional snowboarder. Instead, I earned a teaching certificate and it’s afforded me a unique career!
I taught for 13 years as a middle grades English teacher at Aurora Quest K-8, a GT magnet school in Aurora Public Schools. It was here that I learned so much about the unique strengths and amazing personalities of gifted learners. I found a niche in bringing creative opportunities to all students through an annual poetry contest and an annual novel writing challenge that the middle school continues to participate in. I hope to continue bringing creative experiences like these to all students at Cory Elementary.
After earning an MA in Information and Learning Technologies from CU Denver, I struck out for a new career in the elementary realm. For the past five years I have collaborated with teachers at various schools to bring 21st Century digital literacies to students. I have also found a way to continue supporting GT populations while in this position, including sponsoring Battle of the Books, coordinating the school Spelling Bee and bringing creative thinking opportunities to as many kids as possible.
When I’m not working with kids at school, I am taking care of my urban farm (chickens, ducks, rabbits and cats). I have also worked with older students as a high school diving coach--most recently at Eaglecrest High School.
I look forward to getting to know and getting to work with all of the families and children at Cory Elementary. Parents and guardians bring so much to our community and I hope you'll join me this year as we start getting back to what we love: helping all of our kids find a light-- a spark that keeps us focused on what we are passionate about.
