Second, we are moving into the time of the school year that moves pretty quickly. Please make sure you are keeping in contact with your child's teachers about their progress. Canvas is available for grades 2 -7 to monitor assignments and grades. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to the teachers.
Third, these next two months are short, but packed with lots of opportunities to volunteer and/or chaperone. Please look out for opportunities posted on ClassDojo and from our PTA on Facebook.
Sincerely,
Dr. Wendy Gamble

Literacy Week
November 4-8
The week of November 4th through the 8th is our Literacy Week. The Scholastic Book Fair will be set up, we will have fun classroom activities and we would love to have parent volunteers to come read during lunch and art throughout the week. This is where we need your help! If you would be willing to read a book, or more than one, to students during our Literacy Week, please click the link below and sign up for the days and times you are available. You can sign up for as many slots as you'd like! We have books you can read or you can bring your own. Please let us know what book you would like to bring if you are bringing your own. The time frames are for 30 minutes or 45 minutes depending on the slot you choose. We love our School to Home connection and would love to see as many parents as possible!
If you sign up and have any questions, please email Lindsey.Rembacki@orendaeducation.org or send a message to your child's teacher.
Schoolwide STEAM Project
Balloons over Broadway
Balloons over Broadway. It is the story of Tony Sarg the creator of the Macy Day's Parade. The staff would like the students to work together in their grade levels and create a float for our own parade. Each grade level will have time to brainstorm and then choose what they would like to create. Each grade will create at least two floats. The teachers will communicate more about what is needed once the brainstorming and decisions are made.
On November 22 at 10:15am the students will conduct their own parade. All parade items will be on display in the morning in the gym. The students will walk their creations from the gym down the walk way and around through the playground and back into the gym. We invite you to come and watch the parade.
We are asking for donations to assist with the project. Here is a short list of some items the staff thought the students would need to create their floats. Of course, you are welcome to come and help the classes prepare their floats.

Attendance Matters
Tardiness and Late Arrival
Students who arrive late, after 7:30 a.m. must sign in with their parent at the main office in the administration building and obtain a tardy slip. Late arrivals are documented. Any student arriving after the official attendance time of 10:15 a.m. will be marked absent for average daily attendance purposes. Students who arrive less than 10 minutes late to any class during the school day will be marked tardy. Students who arrive late 10 or more minutes late or leave before the last 10 minutes for any class during the school day, with the exception of the official attendance class, will be marked absent for that class. A cumulative total of 4 period tardies will equal 1-day absence. These absences will be counted towards mandatory attendance requirements.
Make-Up Work
If a student misses class for any excused absence reasons above, a teacher may assign make-up work that incorporates the instructional objectives for the class and that will assist the student to master the essential knowledge and skills necessary to meet subject or course requirements. Students are responsible for obtaining and completing the make-up work in a satisfactory manner and within the time specified by the teacher. Teachers will provide students and parents with additional information regarding penalties for failure to complete make-up work within the time allotted, and the process for making up tests missed due to absence. No work will be provided in advance of an absence.
Except as outlined below, students are not allowed to make-up work for unexcused absences.
For students in grades K–4 ONLY, any work missed during an unexcused absence will result in a grade of 65 if the work is completed and returned after the unexcused absence within the deadline set by the teacher.

Reminders
Building Parent-Teacher Relationships
Good two-way communication between families and schools is necessary for our students’ success. Not surprisingly, research shows that the more parents and teachers share relevant information with each other about a student, the better equipped both will be to help that student achieve academically.
Opportunities for two-way communication include:
- Parent conferences (November 1)
- Parent-teacher Association
- Weekly folders of student work or Planner sent home for parent review and comment
- Phone calls
- Classdojo, and Canvas
Student benefits
Substantial evidence exists showing that parent involvement benefits students, including raising their academic achievement. There are other advantages for children when parents become involved — namely, increased motivation for learning, improved behavior, more regular attendance, and a more positive attitude about homework and school in general.
