Principal's Notes
October brings with it more exciting activities and opportunities for students, staff, and community. We'll be hosting the Fall JCHS Choir Concert Tuesday, October 3rd. Parent/Teacher Conferences take place across the district on Wednesday and Thursday, October 4th and 5th. The end of the first grading period is October 6th, so you should plan on receiving report cards the week we return from Fall Break. Break starts October 9th and goes through the 13th. We'll be hosting the SAT here at JCHS on Saturday, October 7th and the PSAT on Wednesday, October 25th. Our MPJC Showcase will be Thursday, October 26th.
Most Fall sports begin their IHSAA tournament runs in October, and we're excited about their prospects for success. Volleyball and Football are finishing their respective regular seasons and will start sectional in the coming weeks. And, both boys and girls cross-country are looking forward to making a return trip to Semi-State...and beyond?!
With one 9-weeks already coming to an end, the school year is certainly flying. In looking through the posted items below and seeing the amazing things going on both in and out of our building, one thing is abundantly clear. We have great students and a great staff! WE ARE JC!

Business
Professional Internship Program
The Jennings County high School internship program will help facilitate a bond between industry and schools. This program allows students the opportunity to explore their chosen career paths in the work place. The program allows the students to have options on what type of career they want to have after completion of high school or college. The industries will also benefit with this program by hopefully retaining these students when they do graduate. In a world of rapidly changing technology, this will help educate both the students and the employers with hands on training.
The Jennings County High School internship program is designed to give students the opportunities to sample the careers they have chosen for the future. This non-paid program is designed for students planning on furthering their education at a higher level or for students who want a solid career after high school. These programs are set up in conjunction with the block scheduling at the high school and allowing the students to be an intern for an entire semester. The student will do his/her internship every other day for 2 blocks each day depending on the student’s schedule. The supervisor will recommend a grade thru work the student must complete and evaluation at the end of the nine-week period. The Internship Coordinator will issue a grade for the student at the end of the grading period.
This year some of our students are interning at the following businesses: A Kids View Day Care, Little Rascals Day Care, Jennings Veterinarians, St. Vincent Jennings Hospital, United Methodist Church, Jennings County Clerk’s Office, Anytime Fitness, First Baptist Church, USDA, RLM Veterinary Service, Dove-Sharp & Rudicle, Eye Care Group, Decatur Mold, & Two Mile Taxidermy.
English
Eng 12- Working on Beowulf Projects
English 11 - Will begin the American classic, The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Upon finishing the drama, students will be choosing their project to complete. These range anywhere from making jewelry to creating a timeline of the play.
English 10 - Students are transitioning to their first major writing assignment using the P.O.W.E.R. writing plan. Students will learn how to quickly and efficiently plan first drafts of their essays to prepare them for timed writing activities as well as multiple draft writing assignments. Students continue to focus on critical thinking, close reading, grammar, and vocabulary as they gain mastery of the state standards. In October all English 10 students will travel by bus to the ETC to tour the Ivy Tech campus and learn about dual credit courses.
Eng 9 - Cold Cases are the "Hot" topic this month. Officer Staples is helping facilitate discussion and assist the students in using analytical thinking skills to evaluate real cases in Indiana.
The yearbook staff is hard at work designing fall pages about football, volleyball, soccer, cross country, golf and tennis. This year’s theme “We Are 50!” Highlights the growth and success that JCHS has experienced since their first yearbook was published in 1968!!
FACS
Introduction to Culinary Arts classes are taking a field trip to Jungle Jim's in Fairfield Ohio. http://www.junglejims.com/.
This trip will give students an opportunity to be exposed to different cultures through food. Students will exposed to the diversity of different ethnic groups around the world by sampling different food items. Introduction to Culinary Arts have been busy in lab the last week practicing their knife skills making fried potatoes and potato soup.
Fine Arts
In Mr. Hovious' new Ceramics 3 & 4 class, students focus more on the potter's wheel. This advanced level Ceramics class has very talented students who love working with clay and want to take it to the next level. The ceramic pieces in the photo are projects that very proud students have thrown on the potters wheel.
Sandy Hatfield completed her senior project of creating, organizing and running kids art activities at the Vernon Labor Day Festival of the Arts.
JCHS art department was an integral part of this festival.
More than 20 parking spots were painted this year adding color and design to our JCHS outdoor museum!
When the power goes out, the artist keep on working.
Band
MPJC's competitive season includes competitions at Columbus North HS, Ballard HS in Louisville, KY and Colerain HS in Cincinnati, Ohio! Their show, "PIRATES" has been immensely successful thus far, scoring higher than any competitive MPJC performance to date!
MPJC recently represented JCHS at Indiana University Band Day! They played alongside the IU Marching Hundred during an awesome halftime performance!
The JCHS Dept. of Bands and members of MPJC, the JCHS Jazz Band, and JCHS Symphonic Band will be traveling to Walt Disney World over Spring Break to perform at the Magic Kingdom! Please contact Director of Bands, Chelsey Thompson to donate towards the cause or help sponsor a student!
Choir Department
Our JCHS Show Choir, A Touch of Class, joined our Color Guard at Lawrenceburg Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 16 to present our national colors and sing "The Star Spangled Banner." A great bunch of fun was had by all!!!
Our Concert and Show Choirs are currently fundraising for their spring break trip to Disney World. Contact Mrs. Wildey if you want to sponsor a singer to go and perform, a once in a lifetime opportunity!
Our JCHS Fall Choir Concert is Tuesday, October 3 at 7:00 PM. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Doors open at 6:30. All of our choirs will perform that evening in their concert apparel. All performers must be here at 6:00 PM that evening and supply their own black dress shoes.
Math
The New SAT Math Test
In March of 2016 the College Board rolled out the new version of the SAT. SAT results are widely used by many colleges and universities as one measure of a student’s success and often weigh heavily in determining college acceptance. The new SAT is slated to more accurately measure how much a student has learned in high school, whether they can apply their knowledge and if they have the necessary tools to be successful in college. The new SAT includes a Reading Test, a Writing and Language Test, a Math Test, and an optional essay.
The Math Test portion of the SAT focuses on the math most commonly used in a wide range of careers. Problem Solving and Data Analysis, Heart of Algebra, and Passport to Advanced Mathematics are categorized as the main areas of mathematics on the new SAT. The Math Test is divided into two parts, one with a calculator and one without a calculator. Most of the questions are multiple choice, however, some are grid-ins where you must come up with your own answer. There is also a portion of the Math Test where a scenario is set up of a real-life application and questions are asked about how to mathematically model a correct solution.
The Mathematics Department at JCHS constantly strives to prepare our students for high stake standardized tests such as the SAT. Problem solving skills are emphasized in all math classes as well as algebraic skills. Our current Geometry and Algebra II students are working on a series of digital assignments specifically designed to prepare them to apply their knowledge of a specific skill.
Vocational
Agriculture/FFA:
The month of September was very busy for the Jennings County FFA. We helped coordinate the Jennings County Ag Day for the 4th graders from each elementary school. 9 stations were used to present on topics such as beef, dairy, swine, corn, soybeans, chickens, goats, ATV safety, & farm safety. We also participated in the Area 1 Soils Career Development Event in Ripley County. We had 11 team members who worked hard evaluating the soils of Ripley County and placed well at the contest. On September 28th, the Jennings County FFA will have about 40 members attending the District XII Kickoff at South Ripley High School. This event opens the year for our FFA members and is led by the Indiana FFA State Officers.
The month of October will continue to be busy as we are practicing for the Area 1 Forestry & Crops Career Development Events. We should have about 20 members participating in this contest in November. We will also be attending the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis in late October. These members will be touring Indiana agribusinesses, hearing keynote speakers, visiting with colleges & agribusiness companies, and attending leadership workshops. This should be a great event with over 60,000 FFA members from across the nation in attendance. The FFA will also be gearing up for our annual Fruit Sales Fundraiser. This is our way of funding FFA activities and provides a healthy product to our community!!
In the Ag Department, we have been working on outside projects in Horticulture. We are prepping a new plot to encourage pollinators in our community. This is a partnership with the Jennings County Soil and Water and has been very positive for our students. The Ag Power course has been burning rods and perfecting their welding skills. They are using SMAW techniques to learn welding. The Animal Science courses are feeding their brains about nutrition for animals and utilizing math in a real world setting by balancing rations using Pearson Square. The Intro to Ag classes have been learning about agriculture history and are transitioning into learning about FFA in October.
Industrial Technology
The past month has been a busy one throughout the department. Construction students have been busy building a mini barn 12’x16’. The walls and roof have been constructed and ready for shingles.
Transportation students have been welding. Students are spilt into two separate types of welding, commonly referred to as MIG, and Stick welding. As the sparks fly skills are developing. Transportation students have also announced the entering of Purdue University electric go-kart racing series held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Students are currently looking for funding or sponsorships to help in this competition. A few select engineering students participated in the Eco15 Occupation Outreach held at IUPUC campus. Students had the opportunity to meet students from around the nine surrounding counties and learn about the abundance of unfilled jobs related to manufacturing in our region.
October is National Manufacturing month. To help celebrate this we will be hosting a Manufacturing Day on October 19th and College Night October 26th. A new CNC plasma cutter will also be arriving in the middle of October.
