Rigler Family Bulletin
February 9, 2025

Dear families,
Instilling a lifelong love of reading is one of our main goals at Rigler Elementary. There are so many adventures, achievements, and acts of positive change that begin with books, and that is why I am thrilled to introduce you to a fun new literacy initiative spearheaded by our superintendent, Dr. Kimberlee Armstrong.
On Saturday, February 15, Portland Public Schools will be launching its first-ever Golden Key Quest, a citywide literacy scavenger hunt.
Here’s how it works
PPS has partnered with the following literacy hubs to make the Golden Key Quest a reality.
Caldera Arts – 224 NW 13th Ave, Suite 304, Portland, OR 97209
Third Eye Books – 2518 SE 33rd Ave, Portland, OR 97202
Literary Arts – 716 SE Grand Ave, Portland, OR 97214
Students are invited to visit the hubs and look for golden keys hidden inside books. The lucky ones who find a Golden Key should scan the QR code on the key, which will take them to a webpage where they can claim their prize: free family tickets to OMSI! (No purchase necessary to participate.)
Reading is the spark that lights the fire of life-long learning. I hope that our students and families will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.
Sincerely,
Cinnamon Bancroft
Rigler Principal

Kindness Week & Valentine's Day
This week Rigler celebrates our annual Kindness Week. Every day, students are invited to engage in a mission, each one providing an opportunity to practice Kindness, one of our School Agreements. Nothing need to be prepared and all activities are optional. The daily missions are as follows:
- Monday: Random Acts of Kindness
- Tuesday: Kindness through Art
- Wednesday: Be Kind to Yourself (Self-Compassion)
- Thursday: Kindness through Gratitude
- Friday: Be a Bucket Filler
Friday is also Rainbow Spirit Day– Student are invited to wear rainbow colors and accessories. Again, all activities are optional.
Some classes may also choose to host a Valentine's Day/Kindness Celebration. If your student's class will be, classroom teachers will communicate the names of students in the class.
Our goal is to create a positive atmosphere where every student experiences a sense of belonging, where each feels valued and included.
For any students choosing to bring cards or treats, these should be for all students.
Instructional time is critical; celebrations will be limited to no more than 30 minutes and take place at the end of the day.
On Thursday, during lunch recess, we will host an OPTIONAL card-making station as an alternative to outdoor recess. Any registered family volunteer who wishes to support with this effort, is welcome to join from 11:30-12:45 on Thursday. Remember to sign in at the office first.
No Toys at School - Reminder
Please remind your child to leave toys at home unless their teacher has specifically requested them for a special activity. Bringing toys to school can be a distraction and may lead to them getting lost or misplaced. Thank you for your support in keeping our focus on learning!
Found Clothing - Reminder
Please stop by Rigler's Lost and Found. We have MANY items, from jackets to gloves, lunchboxes to sweatshirt hanging up next to our Main Office. We'd love for these items to return to their owners.

LGBTQ+ Caregiver Support Guide
Attached you will find our district's newly published LGBTQ+ Caregiver Support Guide and the *newly updated* Apoyando Nuestras Jóvenes - a culturally and linguistically appropriate adaptation.
At the request and guidance of PPS LGBTQ+ youth, these guides offer families and trusted adults tools and resources to better understand and support the youth in their lives. This project was made possible by PPS LGBTQ+ youth, local partners, and SAY Wellness, a CDC DASH Grant led by the Health and PE Department.
