Dear HMS Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

We hope the summer break has been restful and enjoyable for you and your child so far! The purpose of this communication is to notify you of a change in the cell phone use policy for students at Henry Middle School this fall. While cell phones are a wonderful improvement in our lives, their use at school has been a distraction to learning in the classroom and access to social media has negatively impacted student relationships. In order to address these issues, we are taking steps to improve HMS policies around student cell phone and earbud/headphone use at school.

Beginning the 2024-25 school year, Henry Middle School is implementing a “no cell phone & earbud/headphone policy” during the school day (from 9:00 AM to 4:20 PM).

Parents who need to get a message to their student during the school day can call the HMS Receptionist at (512)570-3400, and a message will be delivered to their child. Should a student need to contact their parent(s) during the school day, they may use the phone in the reception area.

Student Expectation: Cell phones and earbuds/headphones are to be stored in students’ backpacks for the entire school day (including passing periods, lunches, bathrooms, and athletics areas). The following consequences will be given for students failing to follow the HMS cell phone use guidelines:

1st Offense

• Phone is collected and stored in the office.

• Student retrieves the phone from the office at the end of the school day.

2nd Offense

• Phone is collected and stored in the office.

• Student retrieves the phone from the office at the end of the school day.

• Student conference with the assistant principal.

• Parent/Guardian notified.

3rd Offense

• Phone is collected and stored in the office.

• A parent/guardian must retrieve the phone from the office. The device will not be returned to the student directly.

4th+ Offense

• Phone must be turned-in to the office before-school (prior to 9:00 AM) for two weeks and retrieved by the student at the end each school day.

We are excited to begin a new school year and are looking forward to a school experience where students are “untethered” from their personal devices and social media during the school day!
