NEWS FROM THE PANTHER DEN
WEEK 9 EDITION
WEEK 9 REFLECTION
This week we had the opportunity to recognize "Red Ribbon Week." Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention awareness program. In 1988, the National Family Partnership coordinated the first National Red Ribbon Week with President and Mrs. Reagan serving as honorary Chairpersons. Since then, the Red Ribbon campaign has taken on national significance, and NFP continues to coordinate the campaign for families, schools and communities across the nation each year. At PTHS, we recognized Red Ribbon Week each morning with announcements focused on decision making, peer pressure, mental health and making the most of your future. Students signed a banner committing to living a drug free lifestyle and our spirit week themes promoted a sense of community.
In our community, it is important we stand up together in support of a drug-free lifestyle because we believe in each person’s potential and the strength that comes from making positive choices. By working together as a community, we create a powerful message—that we all have the strength to stand up for a drug-free life, even when it’s tough. There are so many outside factors and distractors that affect our youth today so it is critical to support each other in leading healthy, fulfilling lives and model it for our students. It is a team effort and one that we must all be committed to as we prepare our children for the future.
I had the unique opportunity to stand up for two important causes this week as on Tuesday at Game 4 of the World Series, Major League Baseball teamed with the Stand Up To Cancer organization to do a recognition. Fans were given signs to hold up together in solidarity in the fight against Cancer. As a cancer survivor myself, it was a touching tribute and one that reminded me of the importance of what a strong team/community can do together in supporting each other. I was proud to stand up for survivors, patients, families and communities in the fight against cancer. (See picture above)
We all have causes to stand up for in our lives. Know that you are not alone. Whether you are a student, faculty member, parent or community member, standing up together in support of a cause as important as living a drug free life is one of the noblest acts of service that we can do. Awareness is often the first step toward generating meaningful change, as it educates people about the significance of an issue and its impact on individuals or communities. May we continue to stand up together as a Golden Panther community in support of educating the eager young minds of tomorrow about being strong, healthy, educated children that will grow up to shape the future. #nocknation
