Dear BES families,

Our third annual BUSD Art Show is this week! Please join us at Sullivan Middle School from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30th for an unforgettable event and performances by our own BES students!

CAASPP testing- 3rd - 5th grade
CAASPP testing is quickly approaching for our 3rd through 5th grade students. This annual statewide assessment helps us measure student progress in English language arts and mathematics, and provides valuable information to guide instruction and support student learning. We kindly ask for your support in ensuring your child is set up for success during testing. Please make sure your child arrives to school on time each day, as testing begins promptly in the morning and late arrivals can be disruptive. It is also important that your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats a healthy breakfast each day to help them stay focused and energized. Thank you for partnering with us to help your child do their best!

Information about teacher requests for the 2025-2026 school year
At BES, we take great care in creating balanced classrooms that support the academic and social-emotional needs of all students. Our placement process involves thoughtful collaboration among teachers and staff, and we consider multiple factors including student learning styles, peer relationships, and individual support needs. While we value and appreciate your partnership, we are unable to accept requests for specific teachers. This approach ensures fairness for all families, supports the professional strengths of all our teachers, and allows us to build classrooms where every student can thrive
Please know that our entire teaching staff is dedicated to fostering a safe, engaging, and supportive environment. School staff have a comprehensive understanding of students’ academic, social, and emotional needs, and use this knowledge to make placement decisions.
If there are particular needs or considerations you'd like us to keep in mind during the placement process, I welcome you to share those, and we will do our best to support your child.
Thank you for your understanding and for being an important part of our school community.

BES 1st Annual Multicultural Event
Our BES staff is excited to be working with students as we prepare to host our very first multicultural event! In collaboration with our district’s CEI team and support from the community, we look forward to celebrating the rich diversity of our school on May 9th. As this event continues to grow in the years to come, we look forward to partnering with our families to make it even more meaningful.
Important information about being on time to school
Student tardies are on the rise at BES. Each day, the first bell rings at 8:10 a.m., signaling the students and staff the it is time to prepare for the day. Students are in class by the second bell which rings at 8:15 a.m. As a courtesy, our site gives students a 5 minute grace period. We leave the front gates open until 8:20. At that point, your student will need to go to the office for a tardy slip, which is recorded in each student's attendance log in our Aeries Student Information System.
At BES, we want every student to start their day feeling prepared, confident, and ready to learn! Arriving on time to school is a key part of setting students up for success. When students are on time, they can settle into their routine, connect with their teacher and classmates, and fully engage in morning instruction—an important part of the school day.
Tardiness can be disruptive not only to the student who is late but also to the entire class. Missing even a few minutes of instruction can make it harder for students to catch up and feel connected to the day’s learning. By ensuring your child arrives on time each morning, you are helping them develop strong habits that will benefit them throughout their education and beyond.
Thank you for your support in making punctuality a priority. We appreciate your partnership in helping our students succeed!
An Announcement from Student Services
Student Services Update - Attendance & Short Term Independent Study
The Bonsall Unified School District prioritizes student attendance for good reason. When students are absent, they miss valuable learning experiences within the classroom, as well as opportunities to engage in programs and activities. We emphasize the importance of daily attendance because it not only contributes to student success but also helps establish a positive pattern that will benefit students throughout their lives.
However, we recognize that there are occasions when students may need to miss school due to illness or unexpected family circumstances. Additionally, we understand that there may be pre-planned family events, significant religious observances, or important cultural activities that may necessitate a student’s absence.
In such cases, if your schedule allows, and your student is well enough to complete assignments, we kindly ask that you contact the attendance line at your respective school to request a Short Term Independent Study (STIS) Master Agreement. This process involves completing a simple form, reviewing the terms, and signing the agreement. The agreement needs to be completed only once per year.
Once the agreement is finalized, and you state the dates of absence, your child will be provided with the necessary work to complete during their absence. This can be picked up at the school or made available electronically. Upon returning to school and submitting the completed assignments, the teacher will evaluate the work and confirm that the required tasks have been fulfilled. This process ensures that students can recover lost learning, allows the attendance clerk to re-code the absence from the student’s record, which helps maintain positive school attendance rates. Additionally, this process preserves financial resources that would otherwise be unrecoverable if there was no Short Term Independent Study Master Agreement in place.
Although our hope is that families would only need to use Short Term Independent Study on one or two occasions, there is an allowance for the schools to recover up to 15 days of absence for each student.
Thank you for your cooperation and for supporting your child's education.
