DHH Department is the new Chrome extension that provides sign language interpretation in either ASL or BSL (British Sign Language) for children's movies on Disney+ and Netflix. This extension and service is offered free of charge and there are currently 60 titles in their library. You may check out the information at www.signupcaptions.com.

On Tuesday, April 18, 2023, the Ohio Educational Service Center Association (OESCA) recognized Ohio’s top students from across the state during the 34th Annual Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Awards Program.

Evan Fender of Hillsboro City SD , Blake Sollars of Miami Trace LSD, Emma Falgner of Blanchester LSD and Tori DeMeyer of Adams County Ohio Valley LSD (West Union) represented Southern Ohio ESC at the Franklin B. Walter All Scholastic Awards!

The awards program, named in honor of Ohio’s 31st State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Franklin B. Walter, was established in 1989 by OESCA to promote and recognize outstanding student leaders for their academic achievement and service to their schools and communities. One senior from each county in Ohio was eligible to receive this annual honor.

The event was held at the Nationwide Hotel and Conference Center in Lewis Center, Ohio, following the Ohio ESC Association’s annual Spring meeting.

2023 ADAMS COUNTY HEALTH FAIR –

Save-the-Date for the second annual Health Fair scheduled for August 12th.

SOESC has started a new series, The Monday Minute. This is a minute video sharing communication pieces to better our communication efforts across all team members.

In an effort to improve the quality of the air and the long term structural integrity of the Hopewell Center the SOESC Board approved a project with Quality Waterproofing of Dayton LLC

The issues that have existed for many years were caused by groundwater runoff and moisture finding its way into the crawlspace areas under the main floor of the building. Due to the sheer size and square footage of the building this was a major undertaking.

The issues were addressed by the following measures:

• Installation of drain tiles around the interior perimeter of the building foundation within the crawl space.

• Installation of sump pumps to pump water out of that system and to drain water away from the building.

• Installation of commercial dehumidifiers to create a dry air mass within the crawl space area.

• Installation of heavy grade plastic encapsulation of the ground and crawl space walls

• Improvement of grading and downspout systems outside the building to direct water away from the building

SOESC is seeking high-qualified individuals to join our team and serve in the following roles:

• Educational Health Aide
• Intervention Specialists
• Itinerant Teacher for Hard of Hearing/Deaf
• Paraprofessionals
• Student Monitors
• Substitute Interpreters

The Southern Ohio ESC LPDC (Local Professional Development Committee) will have vacant seats on the committee for the 2023-2024 school year. Committee members serve four-year terms on the LPDC. The LPDC typically meets 6-8 times each school year. Committee members are paid $15/hour for committee work. One of the primary responsibilities of the Local Professional Development Committee includes reviewing educators' Individual Professional Development Plans (IPDPs) to ensure that identified goals and strategies are relevant to the needs of our organization, assigned role(s), schools and students served, and the educator. Additionally, the LPDC reviews coursework and professional development activities completed by educators to determine if state certification and licensure requirements have been met. If you have an interest in serving on the Southern Ohio ESC LPDC beginning in the 2023-2024 school year, please notify Curt Bradshaw (cbradshaw@southernohioesc.org) of your interests by May 23, 2023. Board Member, Dr. Norma Kirby, represents Fayette County and was prompted to join the SOESC Governing Board because she cares deeply about children, educators, and education and believes that serving on the Board is a way to support all three and contribute to the community. Dr. Kirby is a retired elementary school administrator who enjoys volunteering, spending time with friends, board and card games, reading, swimming, Ohio State Buckeyes, and spending quiet time at their cabin in the woods. Dr. Kirby feels that as an educator for thirty-five years, it is important for her to give back to the community and she has always loved school and learning, and knew at an early age that she wanted to be involved in education.

The Adams County Ohio Valley (ACOV) Board of Education has chosen Southern Ohio Educational Service Center (ESC) to assist with selecting their next superintendent.

Southern Ohio ESC has many years of experience assisting boards of education with

Superintendent and Treasurer searches. Over the past several years, the Southern Ohio ESC has assisted Blanchester, Clinton-Massie, East Clinton, Fairfield, Lynchburg-Clay, Miami Trace Local, and Wilmington City Schools with their Superintendent searches along with Blanchester, Clinton-Massie Local, and Hillsboro City Schools with their Treasurer searches.

Southern Ohio ESC’s mission is to ensure excellence in performance by pioneering high- quality services and learning through shared expertise fostering student, family, and community success by addressing tomorrow’s challenges today. By supporting local school districts in Adams, Clinton, Fayette, and Highland counties, Southern Ohio ESC has the vision to lead with innovative solutions for student and community success.

The position will be advertised with numerous professional educational organizations, and details for the application process will be announced on April 5. The application deadline is set for April 24, 2023.
