Lutherville Lab Report
What's gone down & what's coming up at the leopards' lair.
October 25, 2024
It has been a full few weeks at Lutherville Lab!
It was a joy to see your lovely children dressed to impress on Picture Day! Can't wait to see the photos come in. Field Trip season is upon us with a few more coming up in early November. If you are planning to chaperone, be sure to complete your volunteer training! See below.
Almost all grade levels are wrapping up their second unit of math instruction next week, as the 1st quarter of the school year comes to a close! We are continuing to focus on our Math Fact Fluency. I have begun making the rounds with flash cards on "Math Facts Friday" in the cafeteria to give our students (if they are up for the challenge) a chance to impress me with an addition or multiplication fact (depending on the grade). Let's keep that practice coming!
I have also started "Friday Funnies" for the announcements. If you have a jokester in the home, have them submit their joke to their teacher and I will select one lucky winner to read their joke with me on the morning announcements each Friday. As many jokes as possible will be read in total. "Dad jokes" preferred! (by me at least).
Next week is Red Ribbon Week and we encourage students to wear red on Monday in solidarity of saying "No" to drugs. We also have a funky schedule coming up in the next few weeks. Please note we have a 1:05 dismissal on Halloween and the day after we are closed to students for teacher professional learning. We have a full day Monday November 4th and then are closed for the election on Tuesday. We're back in full day on Wednesday November 6th.
Finally -- our Lost & Found overflows. I wheeled the rack out to the back fields to have all students look through items going to and from recess, and some found their owners, but there is still so much. If you visit the building, please ask to step into the cafeteria and take a look to see if your child has an item there!
In partnership,
-Mr. McComb
Calendar Reminders:
10/31 - 1:05 Dismissal
11/1 - Schools Closed
11/5 - Schools Closed (Election)
11/19 - Schools Closed (Conference Day)
5th Graders enjoyed a trip to Oregon Ridge for the BioBlitz - an environmental science field trip.
Field Trip Chaperone Requirements
We want to reiterate that in order to chaperone a field trip, the prospective chaperone must be in our school approved volunteer database 7 calendar days before the trip's departure. Volunteer training must be completed for each and every school year for which one would like to volunteer/chaperone. This change is occurring due to too many late nights and last minute requests for our office staff to stop their daily work, or work late into the night from home in order to get parents through the process, often the night before or morning of a field trip. Some pre-planning can save us from making this unfair and unrealistic ask of Ms. McDevitt and Mr. Planter. Thank you in advance for your understanding and partnership.
Below are the instructions for the required volunteer documentation and the links to access the Volunteer Application and the Volunteer Orientation training course. Should you have any questions or need any support, please reach out to Ms. McDevitt at kmcdevitt@bcps.org or 443-809-7800.

5th graders enjoyed the culmination of a science unit with the launching of rockets!
“Gym-NEWS-ium” PE News & Notes from Mr. Bruns
The PLAY60 challenge ended today, and all Student Game Planners (activity log for the entire three weeks) are due to Mr. Bruns, by this Monday, October 28.
One LL student will randomly be selected the Ravens’ Play60 Ambassador. The student ambassador will receive either a spring luncheon at the Ravens’ facility, OR possibly win a chance for tickets to a Ravens home game. The Ravens will choose two (2) ambassadors from all participating BCPS schools to receive tickets to a Raven’s home game in December.
Lutherville Lab’s Monster Mile registration forms due this Monday!
Monster Mile is Tuesday, October 29, 2024, 4:20 – 5:30 (Rain date: Wednesday, October 30)
The Monster Mile (previously Turkey Trot) is a one-mile fun run on school grounds for 3rd-5th graders. We are requesting that all participants donate a minimum of 2 non-perishable food items to the Maryland Food Bank.
Costumes are optional! Costume masks and weapons will NOT be allowed.
After the run, the participants will receive refreshments and medals will be awarded to the top three boys and girls of each grade level. All participants will then have a chance to win a turkey and other various prizes.
This is an excellent opportunity to have fun with your friends, get exercise and help those less fortunate!
Kindergarteners in Mrs. Powell's art class presented their "collage critters"
through a puppet theatre she crafted for the event.

REGISTER YOUR CHILD FOR READ-A-THON WHICH BEGINS ON WED NOV 6TH
Use the link below to activate your student's reader account:
https://www.read-a-thon.com/readers/r/323736353633/1
Our school Read-A-Thon begins on Wednesday November 6, 2024 and is sure to be a fun and exciting event.
We understand that your time is valuable. We also know that providing the best education for your child is important. That's why we are encouraging everyone to activate their student's Read-A-Thon account as soon as possible. The instructions are straightforward, making it quick and hassle-free, and it should take less than 5 minutes of your time. This account will serve as a hub for recording and monitoring your child's progress as a Reader in the event, and for you to share their Read-A-Thon message with friends and family. Thank you so much for your participation and support. Together, we can make this Read-A-Thon an amazing experience for our young readers!
RSVP FOR BOOKS & DONUTS WITH GROWNUPS
In order for us to have enough donuts available, please take a moment to RSVP for this LL annual tradition taking place before school on Wed Nov 13th from 8:30 am. Each student is permitted to bring one grownup with them and the adult is expected to stay with the student until 9:05 am (when school begins). The cafeteria will serve as the main room and several classrooms will also be designated for a quieter reading experience.
YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS INITIATIVE - CAN YOU HELP INSPIRE AND SUPPORT?
We are excited to help LL students learn about entrepreneurship! All students present at school on Wed Nov 27th will participate in an event during the school day and those who are interested will then work towards participation in the Sun March 23rd LL Entrepreneurs Fair.
If any of the following applies to you, please email Danielle Quinn - DQuinn16@gmail.com:
- Available on Nov 27th any time between 9:30 am and 1:00 pm (does not have to be the whole time)? We'd love your help for our kick off event, happening by grade levels. No entrepreneurship experience is needed! We'll provide the materials for you to help students with hands-on product development, business math, customer service/interpersonal skills, and marketing.
- Is your child a young entrepreneur? Are you an entrepreneur yourself? Please let us know so we can keep you in the loop on all the details of this initiative!
